Random Computer Lockups And Screen Freezes
Mar 2, 2007
I awoke by the sound of my computer posting. I was confused, but concluded it was just a Windows Updated rebooting my computer. It happened again the same night, waking me up. I woke up, started looking around my Event Logs (which show no Warnings or Errors by the way), and it froze. I have tried reformatting, updating video card drivers, updating BIOS, running MEMTEST86, clearing CMOS, and none of these have cured it or helped me diagnose the problem.I was watching a movie the other day on my computer, and it froze. Weird thing was, I continued to hear the video for about 20 seconds, but the screen was frozen, and couldn't move my mouse or use my keyboard (couldn't SEE me using it anyways). My mouse has been acting up, so I thought maybe in some weird way, that's affecting the freezing. I unplugged it, using only my keyboard, but of course, it still froze. I can still hear the HDD activity, and the LEDs flashing, but nothing changes on the monitor. I have also tried different monitors, but that didn't help either.http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3595/tempsmx4.jpg Temps; accurate.Could it be a video card problem? I do not have any other PCI-E or even PCI video cards to test with, so I'm SOL there.

I've surfed the forums but none of the problems seemed to hit on exactaly what i have.1st problem is that startup and shutdown each take about half and hour to go through (if at all).2nd Is the most reliable method of making the problem happen....loading a new webpage (like one I have never been to) this is when the computer seems to freeze, but not all the way, I still have perfect control of the mouse, and the clicks still go through but only after it seems to catch itself....And other times it doesnt take any provication to make it do this.3rd If this counts is that whenever it does this lockup thing, a small noise comes from the computer, like almost a beep, but not from any speakers, cant really explain it (its not from the case speaker either) Remindes me of a hard drive noise....kinda, but not normal HD.

please people, bear with me. im sure you have seen a ton of these, but this one isn't like any one i have heard of. i cant figure it out and its driving me up a wall.An interesting thing is that when i run Team Fortress 2 in the background, it doesnt seem to freeze at all. i have 2 GB of RAM, TF2 takes up approx 450mb of RAM. i dont know why my computer would run so well with that much ram being taken up. I tried doing a harddisk error read through windows, but it froze 40% through the scan of the free space (part 5 of 5).i couldn't seem to get a RAM scan to run properly. i tried using the WINDIAG device put out by windows, but none of the commands worked. any other possible ways to scan my memory for errors? I am in a dorm at Ohio State, and i had these same problems last year living in a dorm. they eventually went away, and now that i am back here i am having issues again. except now, i have to restart my comp at least 20 times a day just to get things done. running itunes seems to make it freeze within 5 minutes.

I just came back from vacation and turned on my other computer only to find that right after it flashed the "Dell" screen, it showed a blank screen with random letters/numbers flashing in green. It just freezes there.
It's possible that someone else was on it and may have messed it up but I'm not sure. I'm hoping its still salvageable.

XP Pro SP2 with current critical updates.Computer began freezing 1 week ago. Freezing might occur during boot process; might occur 30 to 60 minutes after booting. Problem began after someone other than regular user did something with iTunes.Occurs in safe mode. Occurs when connected and when not browsing internet. Occurs during boot; prior to Windows XP logon screen. I have been unable to run Panda and HouseCall because it has frozen during each attempt.

My laptop has begun flashing a blue error screen prior to restarting at random. This is not following any hardware or new driver installation; the only software I have installed recently is Bloodshed Dev C++.I had a hard drive failure on this same laptop about 6 months ago; since then I installed a new hard drive, reinstalled XP Pro, all drivers and programs, and it has run without a hitch since then for the duration of the last 6 months...until today.I disabled automatic restarts and the blue screen error It looks to me like a driver error, but I have not updated or installed any new drivers or devices recently. I was hoping to avoid reinstallation of all drivers- could any of you point me towards a more specific fix? I'm not aware of what "w22n51.sys" is for, or the most obvious source for repair.

My computer has become more and more prone to failure lately. I turned it on last night and left for a while only to come back to a blue screen. Sometimes shortly after booting up, it will freeze momentarily, the red HDD light stays lit, and then will come back after about a minute or 2. Not to mention every time I boot up, I get to my desktop no problem, but then I have to sit and wait for several minutes while something loads. I dont know what it is. If i put my cursor in the task bar, it becomes the hour glass and I cannot click anything. After a few minutes, my icons start showing up in the lower right corner and I can go about my business.
I have checked to see if anything is running and taking up a lot of resources on start up. I have made sure nothing unnecessary starts up. I have AVG and checked to see if that was causing problems and after an uninstall showed that it was not the problem, I system restored back. I have run virus scans, adware, spyware, disk defrags, registry derags, registry checks, mem test, pretty much everything under the sun. I have even posted on here several times. So I guess this is a challenge to see who can solve this problem, preferably without reinstalling because honestly, if I am going to reinstall, I am just going windows 7.

when I try to boot up my computer it just stops at the Windows welcome screen where it says 'Windows is starting up...'. The problem is Windows doesn't start up. I've managed to log on however, by going into safe mode and changing the way I log on by switching to the more classic method, but this is not the real answer I want

I would get occasional freezes and random reboots, moreso than with my previously computer. It would usually take me three reboots to get the computer going well, but then it would be fine. I had done two clean installs of xp so I know the OS is fine. As mentioned, i had occasional xp shutdowns due to "device driver problems," but i could always get it going again. All drivers were up to date. Now i have it so that i can not even get into windows. After it gerts through bios, the windows loading logo comes up, then blue screen, and reboot. Everytime. Tried switching hard drive with another that has xp pro and same thing. Blue screen says usual suggest disabling anti-virus but can't even get into windows now.

I had a similar problem not too long ago where my PC would not load and I had to re-install windows. But now, If I try to press F8 it just ignores it and carrys on into loading windows normally, which causes the PC to freeze. This also happens when I try and boot from my windows setup disk. I have checked all the lights on my keyboard and they are all on and working whenever I press Caps Lock etc.As for Viruses etc. I had not downloaded anything new onto the PC since this last hapened and I have been running regular Anti-Virus scans every 2-3 days.

Vanguard, Battlefield 1942.Whether he is playing hours or seconds he gets this problem. The time it takes to crash is not dependent on the level of graphics the game has

I formatted my hd and reinstalled windows. However, after I finished installing all the drivers the system was running pretty sluggish. Also I have no been able to get an anti-virus program running. Everytime I try to install one, after I reset the comp, it freezes after the welcome screen. Actually I can move the mouse around but it won't finish loading up. I ended up reformating again, I installed all the drivers, it ran fine for a little bit, I created a restore point, I installed a virus scan, and same happened again. Also, the system restore kept turning off after every restart. Now i'm in safe mode and can't even undo the virus scan installation. I don't get any kind of errors, it just won't work. Previously the computer ran in this exact setup for about 6 months w/ no problems.

My computer was working fine this morning, I didn't download anything or do anything different, just normal web searching. As I'm loading a web page, the computer freezes. I Cntrl Alt Dlt and nothing, so I turn off my computer and turn in back on, it reboots to the Win screen where you sign in as an identity, I enter my password and it freezes. Again, I have to reboot the computer manually, and it freezes at the Compaq screen that comes on when you first turn on the computer. I turned off the comp, opened it, removed my fan, blew it out a bit, removed the processor and reseated it (in the process, reseated it incorrectly and bent a far corner prong, attempted to straighten w/tweezers, and ultimately BROKE it off...DOH!). I wasn't sure if the broken prong would have a big effect, so I reseated it correctly, reseated my memory, and tried again, same thing, just hangs at the Compaq screen

I have an old - 6 yrs old (no-name) PC running Windows Xp (upgraded from 98). Recently I had to erase and reload everything on my computer - including XP - so now I only have some basic programs from established vendors (MSFT office, Norton, Adobe and SBC yahoo DSL). Since I did all of this, now while I am on the internet, my computer will all of a sudden freeze and the screen will become one color (not the typical blue screen but usually the background color of the page I was just viewing) with some vertical lines. At this point nothing works, so I have to reboot the computer.

My dad installed some program on his computer, didn't like it, and uninstalled it. After that, his computer crashed and I haven't been able to get passed the screen with Windows XP Professional and the moving blue bar and then it freezes. Last Good Configuration doesn't work; it ends up at the same place and the blue bar stops also. I System Restored it to the day before he installed the program; once again, the blue bar stops moving.Could this be a hardware issue? Virus (unlikely)?

I have a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV model ST380021A. Don't know if it's SATA or not. I have a SOYO SY-P4VTP M/B. After I do a clean/new install on a formatted drive, (I even installed the SATA drivers that came w/ the mobo just in case) the computer freezes on reboot after the initial installation where it says "Setup will continue after reboot" or something like that. @ the bootscreen with the logo, the bluish bar scrolls a couple of times and freezes. Does anyone know why? I tried installing at a friends house and it worked fine so I know it's not a harddrive error but I place it in mines and it doesn't work so I create a new install and same problem.. I know it's not a temp issue since it's running < 100 F. THis is a genuine copy of XP. Just in case I used my friends.

When i was checking the computer out at sellers house, it did not crash and worked fine, I took it home for a good price (i thought) at $300. There was an instance of Windows XP installed, and seller asked me to format it before I started using the computer, I agreed and headed home. To test it out I installed Prince of Persia and ran that, everything went smoothly and I was satisfied. I then went out and bought a nice $200 widescreen monitor (the 15" crt wasnt cutting it) and the wireless card as it only had ethernet. Hooked up the new monitor and wireless connected to the internet and started installing WoW. At disk 5 it frooze up and its all gone downhill from there

I am using a Gateway Tablet PC. XP PRO; 2Gig ram; 80 gig hd; Within the last few days it has fallen apart. I have added nothing new. I boot it on and all seems well. I can run an app, work in it and then close it. Then the mouse freezes or slows to a crawl. I can not open any thing else. I registered several DLL's such as urlmon.dll,etc. because of a Micrsoft fix listed elsewhere but this did not work. All spyware and virus checks have been negative. CTRL-ALT-Del gives me an error that the taskmgr.exe could not be initialized. Now the only way to shut down is to totally power off and if reboot I get the blue screen while the disk is checked and it is always negative

Sometimes when I log out of the user account that I'm currently in, XP Pro logs me out, but then stays on a black screen. I don't think that its a lock up from a program that was running, because it seems to get all the way through logging out, and right before the welcome screen is supposed to come up it stays black. Its only happened like 4 or 5 times in the past month or two so its not that frequent. And the same exact thing happened in a computer class where I goto school. They have Dells with like around 2.8 ghz p4s, and they're pretty new too. But they're running XP Pro also. The teacher had no clue what happened or how to fix it so that computer just sat there all period. Another thing too is the fact that there's a lot of user accounts, on both mine and the school computers. There are 5 accounts on mine and I think 6 on the school's. Maybe there's too many user accounts and pro has a problem handling them all?

Since updating to Service Pack 2 in Windows XP, I am having frequent lockups while running games such as, FIFA Soccer 2004, FIFA Soccer 2002, and NBA Live 2003. I have upgraded my video driver and have gone through the typical procedures for eliminating processes and background programs. I also disable virus protection when running the games. I have tried various settings for the video and audio whithin the games, but nothing works! Here might be some helpful info from my dxdiag 9.0 file: Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

I've had my computer since Christmas of last year. It's a pretty nice rig, lots of nice stuff in it. I'll start out with the first problem I've had with it. My DVD drive: it just disappears. I'll be running fine one minute, then the next my computer will freeze for a few seconds, then it's fine, then it'll freeze again, then it's fine. Then I take a look at my list of drives, and my DVD drive isn't on the list. I can still see my two hard drives, but not my DVD drive. This wasn't a HUGE issue to me; I figured I would just have to deal with not being able to install games or watch movies on my computer. So then, after trying to troubleshoot this issue for quite some time, I decide to completely power off my PC, including turning it off with the switch in the back. After waiting a few minutes, I flip the switch, and I hear the sound of something sparking and frying. "That's odd," I think to myself, but try to turn my computer on anyway. No response. I mash the power button but it just won't turn on. Turns out my power supply was fried. "Alright," I said. "I'll just go upgrade." But my dad disagreed and simply purchased one that was roughly equivalent to the one I currently had. Oh well, it's served me fine so far.
Recently, my problems have been getting worse. We tried reinstalling Windows, thinking that might fix the DVD drive. My dad hands me this "custom" CD with Windows and SP2 installed, and since he's likely to start screaming and spitting if I don't do his bidding, I installed with this CD. I am not sure if this was a mistake or not, but I'm thinking it was.Recently my computer has been locking and freezing at random intervals, usually while I'm playing World of Warcraft, though it also has happened at least twice while I'm just playing around on the computer, browsing the internet, ETC. The other day I was playing WoW and a bluescreen popped up. Here's the technical information, or whatever it is.
