i just got my desktop back after a year of sitting (no, i cant afford to buy a new one) and now i cant remember the password to log on. the OS is 2000 NT Pro which was installed JUST before the power supply went out-which is why its been sitting. the friend who installed it chagned my pass and also doesnt remember what it was/is. anyway, from my laptop, i made all the suggested boot discs to recover the password/s BUT it wont boot from anywhere but the standard mode. even when i get into safe mode, the log on box still pops up and asks for a pass. i am NOT compuer inclined at all ( i have to call tech support when i check my email, lol) so please make your replies in very simple, non-technical language. i assume this is the admin pass b/c even using "administrator" and "msg2000" (these are what my friend uses when she re-installs OS)doesnt get me in. is there a way to get into my computer w/o wiping it clean and re-installing the OS?

It appears the password recovery disk feature only works with a floppy. Has anyone found a way to use a CD or flash drive instead?

I was trying to repair a corrupt windowssystem32configsystem file using the recovery console - that did not work. Now, when I use the recovery console I am asked for an administrator password, which of course I do not know. A further complication is that the machine is configured with RAID (striped disks using Intel Matrix), so booting from any kind of recovery disk requires further drivers to be loaded. The ERD password reset tool I am using (not sure of the name but it is Linux based, and free) seems to allow support for RAID, but I can not get it to work (NTFS signature missing). I have tried 'fetching' the drivers from a floppy, but that does not seem to help. So where can I go from here? Are there any other password recovery tools that definitely support Intel Matrix Raid?

First off, i have a 60gb ide drive for my windows installation (3 other drives for storage), and i got a 150gb Raptor X, which is sata. I cloned the 60gb boot drive onto the raptor, but it didnt boot, and said the HAL was corrupt. My guess would be that the hardware abstraction layer got all defunct when it saw the new sata drive, but was expecting an ide? After all that, i decided to run a chkdsk on the ide drive, and clone it again, to see if it booted. I used the recovery console on a windows xp pro disc, but alas, i couldnt chkdsk because i forgot my admin password. Stupid me.

A few weeks ago I did a scan with a registry repair program. Some how it deleted the certificate for the encrypted files on my external hard drive. Because of this I don't have access to any encrypted files on the drive. I've never intentionally backed up the certificate for this drive. Is there anyway to recover this certificate...without buying some expensive program?

I have a user who had tons of sensitive data not backed up. She was running windows XP and its NTFS. The problem is the Error told her to try to recover so she grabbed the factory recovery CD which in turn wiped evwerything out (though I bet it prompted her on that she won't admit it said anything about it all being wiped out). Needless to say her PC is back to factory defaults with NONE of her data she had on it. What is a good program that can go in there and try and recover this information right now she is crying and I have about 5 people wanting me to "do something". Main criteria - recovers from underneath a ghosted image, must work with NTFS and allow for file extraction.

I tried to log on to the internet (dial-up). The dialer panel came up, I hit dial, and it closed. I tried again with the same result. I restarted hoping it woud fix it. It got the the Windows XP loading screen, then went to a light blue screen w/ dark blue bars at the top and bottom (the new bsod) and displayed two messages that said the same thing: autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK After about five seconds the computer reboots and repeats the process.
After the BIOS boot and before the Windows XP load screen, there is a recovery option. I tried this and got into the Gateway System Recovery. It says "Starting Recovery..." with a progress bar and then goes to this BSOD: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure The registry cannot load the hive (file): SystemRootSystem32ConfigSECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. At this point the screen just stays there and the computer responds to nothing but the power button.

Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?

We have 3 user accounts on this pc and would like to have them password protected.

I was doing a clean up with Ccleaner etc and in my haste I did not take note of what I was clicking. Spybot Search and Destroy flashed up and I clicked to allow, or not allow as the case may be, to do something to, from what I can remember, 'WLON' or something similarly named. In any case, what happens now is that I fire up the computer, enter my password, the desktop briefly flashes up for a split second(no icons) and then it immediately logs off and goes to password entry again.

My account on my computer (Win XP Pro SP2) is an Administrator account. Over a year ago, I got tired of entering my password because I an the only person that uses this computer. I did something so it would boot without the password screen appearing ( I don't remember what, but I think I left the password line blank).
Since the computer boots directly to my account, I am never prompted to enter a password; but if I use Power Options (and the computer sleeps), it wakes to the login screen and I cannot reenter my account. I have to reboot. On the login screen, I have tried leaving the password blank and entering every password I use, but I get an Invalid Password response.

A few days ago I tried to update my families pc to SP2 so I could get all the updates etc. It seemed to install alright, but then when starting up it gave me some drwatson.exe error which ended up freezing the pc. So I did what I thought was safest at the time and that was to go back to a restore point and then maybe try reinstall SP2. BUT, after restoring, windows suddenly showed the password/log on screens. I now can't log on as Administrator OR Guest. Nothing works. I've tried EVERY possible password that I could have used in the passed, but nothing works. So now I can't get into the pc at all. I've tried booting up in safe mode and logging in as administrator with a blank password, but that doesn't even work. I've read a lot about it online, and it seems the only solution would be to reinstall XP. But would that work as a format and erase some of my files and/or settings? Or would it just be like an upgrade?

For a long time, I log on to my Windows XP by clicking on 'Default' without any problem. However, today, the computer did not startup smoothly until after running 'system checkup' automatically. Then, when the logon page came, I click 'Default' but it asked for password. I did try some words or left it blank but XP would not let me logon.
