had to install xp home over xp pro. all the files and user folders that were there before i did this are still intact,but.............. when i push control alt delete to bring up the administrator that works but when i go to type the administrative name and password it tells me cannot log me in. is there like a default password(did not have to type one in when i installed xp home, just a name and company)or some way to find out what it is
While perusing my registry as part of running RegSeeker, I came across references to a number of programs (pathfinder, phobus, WinAmp for example) which have never been installed on this computer - at least not since I bought it from Dell in December 04. Is this my clue that this really ISN'T a new computer - that someone had installed these programs at some point, uninstalled them, and never cleaned up the registry? Or am I just being paranoid?
I recently got a virus on it and reinstalled xp. Now all the games I used to play on it are coming up with directx errors. When I looked at the errors in the diagnostic tool it tells me I am using generic drivers. So I popped my driver disk in and installed them all but it still gave me the same error. So I reinstalled directx 9.0 with no fix. I understand that this thing is a beast and I should just stop using it but, it is the only pc I want to clutter up with old games and stuff. And I know it is compatible because I used to play these games before.
I'm Currently Dual-booting between Windows XP and Fedora Core 5 on my laptop. I no longer want FC5 so I thought I would format that partition to regain my hard drive space. I thought the easiest way to do that would be to boot from my windows CD, but discovered that my System won't do that anymore (I know it used to, because thats how I installed FC5 in the first place). It won't boot from my FC5 cd's either. So I tried to access the BIOS to see what's going on, but for some reason I can't. The startup screen tells me to push F2 but that doesn't work.
i can't get rid of it via virus protection and can not stand on net long enough to download updates. have downloaded several sasser removal kits but nothing works.
The IT guy at work thinks a worm is responsible for me not being able to log onto the internet, and getting the AFD network support invalid driver messages. Norton isn't finding any virus, worm or other problems.
I have an eMachines T1150,1.3 GHZ Celeron Processor, with Windows XP.After probably picking up a trojan,or worse, somewhere,I did a system reboot with the restore cd.Then, with a dial-up modem,I downloaded EVERYTHING I was supposed to have, according to Bill Gates, from MS...XP Rollback gold,XP Service pack 2,etc.I mean everything...spent about 12 hours on-line yesterday doing it.Thank God for college football! This morning I go to Download.com and load the AVG Antivirus freeware, directly from the site. After it downloaded,I went to continue the install, and it froze.
I disconnected the power source, after waiting for 10 mins.,and when I turned it back on,XP would not load, not even by going back to "last configuration".Having to shut off the power to turn it off,so I could turn it back on,I now get a black screen, with "Operating system not found".I know, the solution is to go Linux, but I'm just not that savvy yet.In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas?
I know I am not the only one to have this issue, but have not seen a real fix. When our lab users try to save or open Hotmail attachments (Doc, PDF, XLS) recieve the error "Internet Explorer cannot download 94ea from 64.4.61.250. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailiable or cannot be found.
because both Windows (XP) and Internet Explorer have really slowed down during the last several days. I have updated and used AVG, Spybot S&D and Webroot's Spy Sweeper but have found no virus or spyware infestation.
Can't give a reason, but a message stating "Norton Antivirus does not support the repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall" now greets me at boot.Question is how to do this as the Anti Virus on my system is a part of Internet Security. And if some kind person knows of any reason for the occurrence that would be welcome also.Sys is xp sp2, Dell 8400 with 1 gig memory.
clicks on the internet it states that the page could not be found, please go to internet options etc clear cookies. We do all this but it doesn't seem to work, the only thing that works is turning the machine off and restarting it. I rang Dell and Tiscali, neither have been able to help, the computer sends and recieves all 4 packets, they have disconnected the internet connection and reinstalled it, they said they were going to test the line and ring us back but this never happened. I am a complete novice with computers and my mum knows even less
can i get internet explorer address bar to show up at top of the page, all it shows is the back and forward buttons. I want the file/tools/etc.. buttons to show up
my OS is XP home edition with the second service pack. My problem is that IE won't connect. I know i have an internet connection because i can use SBC Yahoo! Browser, and MSN Explorer. But when i open IE6 it comes up with this at the top of the page: The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click "Diagnose Connection Problems..."
Need a bit of help with a problem with internet explorer 6. The affect PC is windows Professional with Service Pack 2 installed. All internet protocols are correct, all settings are correct. However when trying to connect to a secure site I get the message "Page Cannot Be Displayed" The detect network settings is greyed out. Internet provider is Homecall
I use Google as my home page and lately I been having intermittent problems with it. When I open my internet explorer, it says "Internet Explorer cannot display page". It's not my internet connect because if I type in an address other than my home page in the URL bar it will open. My AOL works too. After hitting the home button a few times, my home page, Google will open. But after awhile surfing the net, when I hit the home button, I get that message again that it can't display page. Right now as I type this, I hit the home page button and it says cannot display page so I hit the back arrow and I come back to this page and I can continue typing and I can send this thread. What's wrong with my home page "Google"?
Whenever i login and try to open Internet explorer or any internet browser on Windows XP, it gives me a message saying that the page could not be displayed. However, i am clearly connected to the internet as i can access it from Linux on the same computer and i can play on Xbox Live. Also, when i try to access the internet in safe mode with networking enabled, it still says that the page could not be displayed. Is there any way i can fix this without reinstalling windows because my computer did not include an XP disc when i bought it.
Why am i loosing my connection? Getting on line is no problem, but the moment i attempt to change to another website i loose my connection, in otherwords i am brought to the page that says "This page is not available etc etc" If i press the "Back" key i am brought back to the previous page not the page i tried to go to. Or if i press refresh it also will bring me to the previous page. An my second attempt at getting the desired web page it is then successful. This process is an everyday, all the time issue with the internet. I am running XP-PRO, 600MHZ, 256MB, sbc iNTERNET SERVICE. Folks what are my options?
Some time ago, I must have inadvertently "pushed a button" and the page size for Internet Explorer changed from "normal" to "magnified". I can't figure out how to change it back. Going into control panel and changing the screen resolution size has absolutely no effect. (I never re-adjusted the screen size anyway). It's so annoying to have to constantly work the page bars up and down, back and forth! I think the same thing has happened to AOL.
Basically, when an internet explorer window is minimised, so you just have the tab for it along the bottom of the screen, i want to know if there is a way to not show the name of the page you are viewing.
Using WIN XP (Home) with all updates. After installing IE7 and running my RegCleaner I noticed an inordinary number of files being clean by my Cleanup pgm, How can I check page sizes of temp files and what is the optimumn size ?
