Im running XP, SP2, IE6.0-I like to keep my startup items down to a bare minimum, and this morning when checking on them in Spybot I noticed a new WinLogon had been added at the bottom (called "Schedule", file name "Schedule.exe"). Its the only one of that winlogon group that Spybot identifies, and what they say is it's by user preference. The official name is, Mercury EZ View TV Tuner Card--1, we do not have a tv to be used with this, 2., we never did. 3, my husband said he never installed this (much less heard of it) and 4, when I try to disable it, citing user preference, it won't go away. I know it's not spam or adware, but when something as apparently innocuous as this appears and will not disappear (no its not listed in the Add/Remove Programs) or at least allow itself to be disabled, I have to wonder why. It also does not show up in the HiJack list log, or as Badware in Spybot. Should I hunt this down and shoot it dead, or should I just ignore it?

What happened to them? How do I get my working startup items bacK? I recently installed Process Explorer, a program which I found of no use to me. I have uninstalled it, and still the problem persists.
I just reformatted for the second time and upon startup i keep getting this error
"Error loading nvCpl.dll
The process cannot access the filebecause it is being used by another process." Here is the kicker- I didn't get this error untill i installed aol 9.0 - can that have something to do with it??? I went 3 days since reformatting error free.I ran a hijackthis and i can't seem to find the error anywhere.can the new hard drive iv'e installed have anything at do do with this?
I have the following startup item that when I uncheck it, it will check itself back on when I restart.Start up item: ctfmon Command: C:WINDOWSsystem32ctfmon .exe Location: HKCUsoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentversionun Like I said, I can uncheck it and then it will be mysteriously checked when I reboot the computer I was wondering if this is a potential problem (trogan) and how I can investigate this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAt the start up, I'm getting some error messages..1. mimboot.exe Entry point not found something to do with a CoreDll.dll 2.hpqthb08.exe - Failed to initialize properly- HP image zone?3. A couple of symantec errors (don't use norton anymore but can't delete it either)4. And after we get rid of the error messages, the HP update Agent runs the whole time but can't ever complete the update.I usually have to get out of that by alt+ctrl+del. When we try to shut down the computer, it just doesn't do it. I ran regcleaner and it fixed a bunch of stuff, but still wouldn't shut down or restart properly. Then I disabled NVidia driver helper, seemed to help a little, but now it gets stuck on the blue "logging off" screen and we still have to turn it off and restart manually.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.

The folk at this forum have helped me out massively before, so I again humbly seek you expertise. My XP machine tells me that a file in the config/system directory is missing or corrupt. So I put the XP disk in and it loaded up some things, only to tell me that it cant find any drives. I checked - the physical drives are there (a pair of Seagate 160Gb set up as mirrors in RAID - the RAID screen appears before the "config/system" error message) and I pulled the connectors apart and and put them together again.
I have my folder options set to show hidden files, but I cannot locate the msdos.sys or config.sys files, and I use Windows XP Home. How do I locate these files?
