Config System File Missing Or Corrupted /system Wont Start OS?
Oct 14, 2007The system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

Ok, so, my computer wouldn't boot up right? I had to repair the installation etc and activate Windows, which I did today. The just recently, I was in safe mode trying to fix the PC, and then it restarted, and now everytime I try to start it up, it says,
The file Windows...../config/SYSTEM is missing or corrupt and it says I have to repair Windows, using the disk.

Jul 6, 2008My problem started when I booted my computer. Windows (XP Home Edition) started with the message that windows/system32/config/system.sav was missing or corrupt. It told me to use the recovery console to solve the problem. I saw with the recovery console that the system.sav file wasn't missing so it had to be corrupt (0 bytes in filesize).

It states that I can put in the originial setup CD-ROM and select 'r' to start repair but that doesn't help me. My laptop did not come with a windows cd as I bought it preloaded from BestBuy. So about 4 years ago when my computer was overcome with the Sasser worm, I reformatted and loaded a friend of mine's Win XP Pro cd on my laptop. I still have the CD but when I hit 'r' (Boot partition recovery) it does its little DOS thing and then gives me a Disk I/O Error. I am thinking that maybe it is trying to boot from a floppy drive and not my CD drive and thats why I am getting the I/O error?

Oct 5, 2005while logged into Windows, the IDE cable that is connected to my HD went bad. I double checked this by replacing the cable and seeing if the BIOS could see it, which it could. When I tried to log back into Windows however I got this message. Code: Windows could not start becuase the following file is missing or corrupt:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the orginal Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.I'm not sure how this works. Do I hit 'r' at the blue screen after it loads all the drivers or do let it setup and I will get a chance to choose a repair option. The error only effects Windows. I know for sure because I have a Linux partition that works fine. I have my orgainl Windows XP CD- ROM. Does anyone know the steps to fix this? Windows XP SP2 (Fully upgraded)(CD-ROM is the orginal XP SP1 disk)

I do that and it takes me to DOS where I can roam around my harddrive and the windows CD. now how do I find this file to replace it? because on the windwos CD there is no "system" file in the directory I386/system32/config/. I've tried to copy it from my other computer, but since it's using the file I cant'!

Jan 28, 2005I am having trouble running a dos medical office management program after copying it via a Zip disk from a Windows 95 to a Windows XP computer.All files copy correctly and are installed on the Win XP hard drive ultimately.When I start the program It tells me that I need to increase the number of files in the Config.sys file from 40 to at least 99 files. After going to the Sysedit32 folder in XP, I found the Config.sys file (with nothing in it) and wrote the FILES=99. After re-booting XP I still get the same message. Jan 27, 2008A trojan virus changed my windows xp home addition configuration. I installed the free AVG virus detection software and eliminated the virus. I had to eliminate all restore points which were also infected. Now I need to change or delete a line in my config files. I keep getting a message that windows internet explorer can't find a file which was the virus file(///c:windows/privacy_danger/index.htm'. make sure the path or internet address is correct). I also get a different display background screen which I can't change. All else seems to be working properly.

Aug 14, 2005The windows Explorer search feature works well enough for most file searches except when looking for files on a disc. On those occasions, the In Folder results point not to the disc drive but to c:documents & settings[name]Local Settings Applications Data. In short, not to where the files are. To add insult to fubar, clicking on any folder in the list results in -- absolutely nothing because I am clicking on a phantom folder (duh). I know that if I scroll across to the right, miles outside the screen view, I'll finally see where the file in question actually resides -- major and unappreciated pain. Is there a config or reg edit somewhere that will allow me to set the In Folder to show the file where it actually is, referencing the disc drive, instead of the above c:. If not, at the very least, I think Microsoft should share some of what the Einstein was smoking the day he came up with this one.

Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.

The folk at this forum have helped me out massively before, so I again humbly seek you expertise. My XP machine tells me that a file in the config/system directory is missing or corrupt. So I put the XP disk in and it loaded up some things, only to tell me that it cant find any drives. I checked - the physical drives are there (a pair of Seagate 160Gb set up as mirrors in RAID - the RAID screen appears before the "config/system" error message) and I pulled the connectors apart and and put them together again.
