Windows gives me the following error message when I open some applications; "There is no disk in the the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." Then light on the floppy disk drive turns on.

I finally got the error message to stop on startup and the computer worked fine but now when I access any windows based programs, windows explorer, my computer, control panel, IE 7, my computer puts the error message back up.
When i click "close" windows explorer does not go away, the error message just does but it still prohibits my access to these programs (which really really annoys me).
2 days ago, I used add/remove programs then Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AV, and replaced it with AVG Free. My PC seemed to work fine until yesterday: upon booting, AVG automatically tried to update and ended up reporting "something bad happened..."; Not sure if AVG issue is relevant but now I CANNOT OPEN FOLDERS or APPS!
Now about 9 times out of 10, when I try to open a file or app, the screen icons and background pic disappear momentarily, and nothing opens. If I manage to open a folder, it seems my PC hangs up similarly at the following task (sometimes I get my RCA Lyra icon suddenly showing up in the toolbar). BTW I experienced the exact same problem a couple of times before the AVG install but rebooting would always fix the issue. Not anymore! It took many reboots but I was able to get AdAware to run - found nothing - and Maintenance Mechanic 6 - showed PC Repair is needed but hangs once it gets to reading the disk index. I tried deleting Lyra, but it won't let me (hangs once I manage to open the add/remove program page).
Every time i try to open anything i get a pop up box that says "You have chosen to open anyapp.exe which is a : Application from :C: Program Files anyapp Would you like to save this file? "

It makes no difference what program I open the adobe application still comes up.The only one not effected is explorer.Have a limited account active and this seems ok.tryed opening everything to get in the back door but I get the above error.

I have a fresh install of WinXP Pro, SP3. The dialog box opens up. The drop-down menu for choosing drives expands as expected for about 1 second, then closes back up. This happens no matter what. It just won't stay open/expanded. I must add, that clicking, My Computer, and using THAT drop-down to choose drives works fine. It's only in applications that this happens. I could swear I've seen this behavior before, but I can't place what it is or how to remedy it.

View 5 Replies View Relatedthis has been happening on a few installs i've attempted: after an exe extracts to the /temp folder, it doesn't want to find "pftx.tmp" and asks for the Install Disk (Insert Disk/browse dialog) and the install breaks - i've also had problems with "Catastrophic Failures" with InstallShield installs, and don't know if these are related - i've attempted to reinstall Windows Installer and upgrade the InstallShield engine, to no avail. any true geeks (i'm just a wannabe) have an idea what this "annoyance" might be caused by?

When i double click on any local disk (Local Disk(C) ,(DVD-RW Drive (D) ,(CD-RW Drive (E) or any Removable Disk it will not open directly, it opens a search window. I have to open the the drop down box and select open. I know this was caused by a virus that no longer exist on my PC.

View 1 Replies View RelatedPlugged my external LaCie HDD in to my PC, as I always do and I had an SVCHOST.exe worm, apparently.. Which was healed by my AVG. Dunno how the hell I had a virus on my ext HDD in the first place. Now, when i try and access by ext HDD by double clicking its icon in "My Computer", I get the "Open With..." dialogue box. I can only browse my files by right-clicking and selecting "Explore".. Everything seems normal on the disk.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI was going to post this on the software forum, but since there seems to be no problem with the software (WinZip) I decided to place it in here.Everytime I attempt to open my 'Unzipped' folder in My Documents (the folder every file extracted from Zip files [using WinZip] goes to on my computer) it asks me to format my C: drive. I tried to format it, and I got this error: Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of this drive. Then try formatting again.I closed all my open windows and such and tried again. I still get the same error. I really don't want to format my disks to get into the Unzipped folder (which would be pointless anyway, since formatting erases all your files, and those are what I'm trying to get back) and nothing else seems to be working.
On mouseover Windows tells me the folder is empty, and when I view its properties it's 'read-only', no matter how many times I try and keep it from being so. I've tried deleting the folder (always getting the message that the directory is NOT empty), moving the folder into another folder, and uninstalling WinZip. NONE of this works, and I really want my files back. Is there any way you can help?
I'm having a minor problem with my 'my computer'.. In the my computer window, when i double click on any diskdrive, the diskdrive window opens in a altogether new window(previously it used to open in the same window). I did something in folder options(I dont know what i exactly i did) and from then its behaving like this. But when i open any folder in the disk drive window,it opens in d same window.So the problem is only with the 'My computer' window.

View 7 Replies View RelatedA week after updating to most current Windows SP1critical updates (its only change I can think of) I happen to notice that I cannot run a disk error check, I am told that its a NTFS file system and Win cannot open volume for check. Also when I start computer I have to log on with my password every. I have tried to eliminate the password requirement to no avail. I cannot return to pre-update status with System Restore because its been a week and there is too much new data in the system. This is a free standing desktop PC. Can anyone help with these two things? I hope so as I do my error check regularly and find it frustrating to have to log on every time I restart .

Otherwise the computer seems to start up normally and operate as usual. Something has changed and I don't know what the problem may be.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install xp home on my bros comp. he used to have win 2000 pro. I backed everything up and formatted the hard drive. (75 gig ntfs). This worked great. I pulled his hard drive out and put it in my comp (secondary) I then installed xp on it. This went fine, I was even able to boot all the way to xp. The problem comes in when I tried to move the hard drive back to his comp. I could not boot past the compaq screen. I got the error message

My CD-Rom drive wont open CD-RW's for some reason, when i insert the disk and try to open it i get the msg Please insert a disk in the cd-rom drive.considering that i've used these same cd-rw's in the past and never had a problem I'm kindda lost. i cant think of anything i've changed that would cause this problem.
i'm useing an acer cd-rom drive and the disks in question have Fedora core 2 on them, I cant get my computer to boot off them, so i tried opening them in windows and there not even being recongnized by the drive, I used them awhile back w/o and trouble but have re-formatted since then

The router I have works perfectly fine and has been since I got it in November. It's just that every time I click on Mozilla, AIM, AIM Triton, or even Internet Expolorer nothing happens. I have tried right clicking too. Everything else on the computer works EXCEPT for those applications. I checked and the router is secured and working.

Installed my otf's (openType fonts) and have tried 2 different type managers (Extensis Suitcase and FontAgent Pro 4) to get my fonts to activate and they are not activating.
This lead me to check the windows font folder and I noticed that any OTF in the folder was not showing up in my applications (photoshop etc). So I double click on the fonts and I am getting a "the requested file /path to font/ was not a valid font file" message. I installed the fonts directly from my cd so I know the fonts are valid.
