My System Generates 0 Byte Files

Sep 27, 2008

My system (WinXPSP2) generates 0 byte files for some reason. The files are associated with other MS Office or PDF files and prohibit the associated file and the 0 byte file from being moved, copied, or deleted. Frequently, the MS Office or PDF file that is associated with these 0 byte files is corrupted and unreadable; other times they are not. There is apparently no virus per NIS 2008. Some of these files are opened and used frequently and others have not been used in months. I am looking for suggestions concerning the possible cause(s) and solutions. I have been able to delete these 0 byte files with Unlocker. These files interfere with backups and file maintenance.

Can't Delete 0 Byte Files

Sep 28, 2005

I've searched in a lot of different places for help and have had no luck. It's almost ironic. I know a lot about computers and have both searched this forum, other forums and random pages through Google. No luck.I installed the Messenger Program Trillian to a Jump Drive. A Memorex 1Gig to be exact. (And, no, this is not a program specific error. I'm getting there.) Well, I finally decided to get rid of it and having neglected to create registry keys for installing to a removable drive such as this, as is my custom, I proceeded to select folder "Trillian" and hit delete.

Get Rid Of 0 Byte Video Files That Did Not Convert

May 25, 2007

I was converting several video files from .avi to .wmv and I came across problems with some of them. Those that were unable to be converted ended up with 0 bytes and if I click on it, it shuts down "my compter" folder completely. How do I get rid of these? I am unable to change my views to thumbnails. I don't find it much of a problem if the files are plainly on my c: drive but when they are within a folder, I can't change the view or get rid of those files.

Remove Applications Even Space Is Zero Mega Byte

Aug 17, 2008

I have been receiving a low disk space message, it suggests cleaning up and removing files. Now I am receiving a 0MM free disk space messgae, suggests the same, but it will not allow me to remove anything, it says, ironically because there is no disk space. I am not sure how or why this has happened. I added a new 1gb memory card a month or so ago and have not added any new programs, I also bought a portable hard drive, but I am not sure how that all works. I just want to clean out/clean up my laptop and still keep the things I need.

I'm using Win XP and, using the built in Zip feature, have zipped up 14 files that include one .exe file and one .bas file. When I try to Extract All files it extracts all except these two files. It says that the files have been blocked to protect the computer, then I can click on a link to find out how to unblock the files but the instructions to do so don't make sense. The instructions tell you to save the file, then right click/properties/unblock, but I can't see how you can save a file if it hasn't been unzipped. How can I stop the .exe and .bas files from being blocked

System Restore To Save Space - Backup System Files

Aug 12, 2002

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

Lot Of Duplication In The System Files For These Two Systems ?

Jul 27, 2009

Using; Dell GX280, BIOS A07, 2.8 GHz, 512 Mz RAM, 160 GB HD, XP Pro, SP2

When I first booted up the system the administrator was fine and I selected the microsoft (alone) version. Then I rebooted and tried to select the non-microsoft version. The result was the creation of a second administrator. One is the old microsoft version (which blocks a lot of functionality) and the new one "administrator.Frank." which is fine. There is a lot of duplication in the system files for these two systems. The second one works well. It would be nice to somehow reboot and have a clean system without the microsoft administrator it is unclear how to do this since I tried once and created the second adminstrator. I am probably rebooting improperly.

Copying Registration Files From Old System To A New One?

May 22, 2006

My old XP crashed 2 days ago (All thx to WIndows Auto Update). I tried to use the Windows XP original CD but after repairing, it just stuck at the loading bar with an error message saying that "System32drivers tfs.sys is missing or corrupted".Using the recovery console, I copied the ntfs.sys from the CD to replace the new one, but it didn't solve the problem.

Tired & Frustrated, I decided to install a new one on D:. Now my new XP worked great, but I kinda need all the program that I installed on the old XP back. They're all there on my hard drive with my old XP system. So I guess if there's someway for me to copy all the registration files from my old XP system to my new one, I can run all my programs. I'm really appreciate if anyone can help me with this.

Files Missing After System Recovery

Feb 24, 2006

I had and umountable boot volume blue screen come up on my dell inspirion, so I ran the windows xp cd, and used chkdsk /r. When it was running at about 70% it jumped back down to 50% and then continued to finsh the recovery, it said several problems fixed.... so i assumed it worked, but the jump back to 50 must be caused by some error. Now I can run windows, but its like the computer has amnesia. All user icons are there, but none of the set pictures for them. So i clicked on mine, the start menu is empty, and when i run files the recent files aren't saved to the start menu. Ontop of that all files I had on my desktop are gone. Mydocuments is empty all of that. When I went to look for my files, all files saved in the c: drive are still there, in fact the c: drive used disk space is exactly the same size as it was before the unmountable boot volume error. Which leads me to believe that all the files I had saved on my desktop and in mydocuments are still somewhere on the hard drive. Its like all files connected to users on the computer have dissappeared and no files can be saved to the user accounts, but the user names are still there. What happened to my computer, and how do i fix it and can i get those files back. I also tried running chkdsk again and it did the same thing around 70% and dropped back down to 50% before it continued working.

Missing Files - System Won't Boot

Jul 11, 2005

I had tried to run a friends HD as a slave drive with mine on my other machine earlier. I got it up and running & it repaired the friends drive and I was able to get some files off he wanted. After I turned it off & took his out I got an error message that some files are missing in windowssystem32configsystem on my computer that I was using with his HD. The message goes on to say to boot with the windows xp disk and try a system repair. Well, that failed also. I took it out and brought it up here and put it on with this one as the slave drive and I got into it. Is there a way I can repair those files with it running as a slave drive on this one, or do I have to just re-install windows again.

System Files Split Over Two Drives

Jan 14, 2009

Problem: Now with the PC running and precious data growing ever larger my raid0 is vunerable to failure. Therefore I wanted to remove the old drive and insert a new drive to back up the raid0. When I removed the old drive windows wouldn't boot. After reinserting the old drive I have discovered the boot.ini file is on this other drive along with a few windows hidden files. I didn't realise this would happen -noob- and therefore I'm not sure if I can just repartition the small number of files and move them onto the main Raid0 drives. Would this mess up windows booting? The reason I want to move these files is it's an old drive and if it dies windows won't boot.

Create SP2 CD With Latest System Files

Jul 5, 2005

I had to reinstall an .inf file and it called for files on my XP CD. The problem is that the XP CD is the original RTM version and my system has been updated to SP1 and SP2. The installation program wanted to install older versions of the files from the CD over the existing versions. I found some but not all the files I needed for the installation in the folder "Service Pack Files."Is there some way to create a CD that contains all the current system files that I need to repair XP SP2. Sort of a current snapshot. It would not have to be an installation disk, just a repair disk.It would be nice to be able to get a installation disk that is current without having to pay for a new full version of XP. After all these years my system is so garbaged up that dumping it and starting over is appealing. I do not want to start with my RTM and then run all the upgrades, it would take forever. Microsoft must realize that there are a lot of people with
the same problem. Perhaps someone could convince them to come up with a cleanup tool.

System Restore In XP - Exe, Toejam - 190,000 Files

Jan 26, 2005

A few months ago I had to do a clean install on my operating system and all is fine with it but before I did the install I tried a few rounds of system restore to try to avoid doing that. It didn't work, but it brings to mind a question. While I was looking around my HD to make sure I had backed everything up I noticed that certain files were named toejam(1).exe, toejam(2).exe, toejam(3).exe, ect all the way up to toejam(8).exe. If you take your computer back in time dosen't this replicate certain system files each and every time you do it? and if so, can you delete the extra files. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that the ones in the middle, toejam(2) through (8), would be OK to delete?I ask this question because I'm helping a friend sort out her computer and every time we do any kind of system scans it takes for EVER. There are over 190,000 files on her computer. I know that she has a lot of music and picture files on there, but I think that most of these files are from the many times she has done a system restore. I have a lot of picture files and MORE music files than she does but I barely break 80.000.Does anyone know how to do this and if it can even be done?

Multiple Files Running In System

I've been looking at some of the different processes currently running on my computer, and I recognize most of them. For those that I don't recognize, I usually Google them. For example, there are currently 5 SVCHOST.EXE's running, two in SYSTEM, two in NETWORK SERVICE, and one in LOCAL SERVICE.
