Can't Delete 0 Byte Files
Sep 28, 2005
I've searched in a lot of different places for help and have had no luck. It's almost ironic. I know a lot about computers and have both searched this forum, other forums and random pages through Google. No luck.I installed the Messenger Program Trillian to a Jump Drive. A Memorex 1Gig to be exact. (And, no, this is not a program specific error. I'm getting there.) Well, I finally decided to get rid of it and having neglected to create registry keys for installing to a removable drive such as this, as is my custom, I proceeded to select folder "Trillian" and hit delete.

My system (WinXPSP2) generates 0 byte files for some reason. The files are associated with other MS Office or PDF files and prohibit the associated file and the 0 byte file from being moved, copied, or deleted. Frequently, the MS Office or PDF file that is associated with these 0 byte files is corrupted and unreadable; other times they are not. There is apparently no virus per NIS 2008. Some of these files are opened and used frequently and others have not been used in months. I am looking for suggestions concerning the possible cause(s) and solutions. I have been able to delete these 0 byte files with Unlocker. These files interfere with backups and file maintenance.

I was converting several video files from .avi to .wmv and I came across problems with some of them. Those that were unable to be converted ended up with 0 bytes and if I click on it, it shuts down "my compter" folder completely. How do I get rid of these? I am unable to change my views to thumbnails. I don't find it much of a problem if the files are plainly on my c: drive but when they are within a folder, I can't change the view or get rid of those files.

I have been receiving a low disk space message, it suggests cleaning up and removing files. Now I am receiving a 0MM free disk space messgae, suggests the same, but it will not allow me to remove anything, it says, ironically because there is no disk space. I am not sure how or why this has happened. I added a new 1gb memory card a month or so ago and have not added any new programs, I also bought a portable hard drive, but I am not sure how that all works. I just want to clean out/clean up my laptop and still keep the things I need.

When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

I am attempting to clean out my temp files on my Windows XP Home. The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

There are many files listed in this folder. I am unable to delete them. When I go to this directory in safe mode command prompt there are no files. I even used dir /A:H to included hidden files and there are none. But I can still see them in Windows XP PRO. I have Norton 360 and it did not find any viruses. Went I try to delete them windows gives no errors. Some of the files even have the same name and extension. Is there a cache or a temp file I need to delete first?

I'm cleaning up my father's PC and I found that there are over 20,000 BIN and SPJ files on the C drive. I don't know what they do. Most files are about 1 kb in size. but a few are about 2000 KB. I cut and paste them all into one folder on the C drive and no computer functions have been affected. They are taking up about 2 GB on the disk. I am wondering if I can safely delete them.

This XP annoyance has bugged me for a long time. When I'm cleaning up my filing system, I may consider deleting some folders, but first move out of them certain files I may still want to keep. However, when I try to delete the no-longer-needed folders, XP constantly comes up with a message telling me I cannot delete the folders because it may be being used by another program and to first shut that program down. Well, it is NOT being used by another program because ALL the programs that could remotely have anything to do with that folder- minus the OS, anti-virus, etc., are OFF!
Even if I shut down EVERYTHING except for the OS, that same idiotic error message still comes up and refuses to allow me to delete the folder UNTIL I reboot the system. So,I have to write down each and every folder I plan to delete and then delete them after rebooting the system. And STILL the occasional time the error message comes up telling me it's being used by another program. I'd like to know what idiot at Microsoft came up with this glitch? Personally, If I wrote the software for this OS, I would at least mention which program was using the file I was attempting to delete and have the option for this program to be shut off. BUT Somehow the people at Microsoft manage to once again lose grasp of the obvious. So, now that I've once again given my opinion re: the inner workings of MS, is there anyone out there that has had this problem and has figured out a solution other than rebooting the system?

I bought a new computer with a new hard drive and had the technician transfer files from my old hardrive over to the new one. Now I have my old Windows folder from before on there now and I wan to get rid of it. Problem is, it won't let me delete some of the files.
It says that the files are in use, but that is not so because it's an old Windows directory. How do I delete files like DLL's which don't want to be deleted and aren't being used?

I am having problems deleting some Windows Temp Files. There are three that absolutely will not delete even when I cold boot or using the search feature and trying to delete them that way. ( sometimes that has worked for me in the past).
.
The three files are Jet8B96.tmp, Jet9829.tmp and ZLT04e0c.tmp.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them? I am comfortable with using DOS if necessary. And oh yes, ran Ad-Aware, and AVG and cleaned out registry as well.

I deleted some large (2 to 3MB) Photoshop files in order to free up disk space, but two of them cannot be deleted or moved from recycle bin. "Empty recycle bin" command or "Delete command" yield the following error message; [error messages refer to the files as Dc2 and Dc8, respectively]: "cannot delete Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." "Restore" command, attempting to cut and paste, or attempting to drag either file to another folder yield this error message: "cannot move Dc8:it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This happens even when recycle bin is right-clicked from the desktop icon immediately after start-up and with no programs running.

I tried to removed the application but some of the files would not let me delete them.I then uninstalled UNIX Services for Windows which worked fine but left behind it's folder 'C:SFU' because a few application folders are there and are write protected.I installed them under UNIX Services for Windows and now I can't delete them.Any back doors or UTILS to get rid of them? I tried KILLBOX but it could not do it.

I recently transferred my photo files (CRW) from a 4GB CF card to my hard drive. Almost all were OK, but 3 were not. Each has a size of 0 bytes. I would like to delete them but every time I try I get the message: Cannot delete CRW_7750. It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again. Closing all programs that could possibly be using the files has no effect. Re-starting my machine in Safe Mode and trying to delete the files brings up the same error message.

While looking in "Windows(XPsp2) Explorer / Documents and Settings / Owner," I noticed a folder - "My Recent Documents." Within that folder there are a lot of files. My 2 questions are:1- Can these files be deleted?
#2- If they can be deleted, how would that be done? Would we do it just be high-lighting the files on right-side of screen and then deleting?
