View 6 RepliesI am having a problem where everything seems to take up way more CPU usage than it used to. There is no application stealing processing power. Rather, when I start an application that would normally use a bit of CPU, it now spikes the CPU.In particular, 5 year old game called Neverwinter Nights is now unplayable and spikes up to 55% CPU usage on both cores even though it should only hit one core. The Earthsim program also does the same. So do other applications.
View 11 Replies View RelatedUnusually slow system; unsure where to go from here.machine runs very slowly for the processor and for the amount of processes running. There is some degree of visual skipping/slowness,it is particularly apparent with audio and visual media. Even the startup sound is very drawn out and is characterized by a long, skipping echo. Music skips randomly and even alert noises, (such as the one heard when ending a process) has the same skipping/echo. This happens even when there are few apparent processes running and very little CPU usage (such as 5%), as well as when the system is overloaded (which happens remarkably quickly for the 20-30 processes running).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently reistnalled XP and I'm experiencing weird problems when moving windows on the screen, or scrolling, everything is in slow motion.I can't play movies on full screen, and some games are poor in rendering. I have tried all the possible optimizations, but I believe the problem might be in the video card, when I tried to reinstall the video driver, I was told that the video card is not installed properly, but how could this be? I mean, I haven't touched the hardware, what am I supposed to do?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI think I was on thiese forums a year or so ago with the same problem, and the solution worked. You guys had me run a scan and post a log report of all the processes and such that were slowing down the computer. The last few days the fan has been kicking on a lot, and I'll wake up in the morning occasionally and the computer will be locked up. Not sure if it's something I downloaded or something that just made its way to my computer. What's the program to run the scan? I'll post the log after I get the link.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer is running really slow. I run win XP. I have AD Aware and norton systemworks with the most current virus defination updates. My windows XP is updated and my processer is brand new Celeron D. I have checked my MSCONFIG start up options and only a few programs are checked. I cannot figure out what is wrong. I think that it might be a virus but I don't know. I have installed some new programs recently like the GoGo Data toolbar and a bootleg version of Norton Systemworks that I got off of iMesh.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer freezes up. No keyboard, mouse, ect. The mouse arrow disappears. I have to "power off" the computer to get things working. Now here is the strange thing, if i move the mouse around "quickly" the computer will work OK. This is on a new install of Windows XP + sp1. If I am moving the mouse slowing as in solitare the system will lock up in about 10 mn
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer is loading EVERYTHING very slowly, yet i clean every part i can: 'Disk Cleanup;' temp files; under Document & settings - Local Settings - then Internet temp files; i even defragment once a week. Yet even bringing up 'My Computer,' causes the 'search light' to try to find files (about 30 seconds later, it does).I've checked for viruses and adware and have none under AOL's system.

From time to time I help people fix their computers. And on occasion I have messed up my computer in the process. No problem. I would just reformat. I read about a program called Nlite, where I could slipstream all my programs + windows xp + sp2 and, most important, all the windows critical updates to date. It worked great. It cut down my time from start to finish, from about 7 hours to a little less than 2 hours. But in the process of learning how to do this, and before I found out that there was such a thing as a virtual pc, I of course had to reformat a number of times.

I've heard that NTFS is superior and I am thinking of converting it. I understand that once converted, it is irrevisible. Should I convert it to NTFS and in what way is it better than FAT 32.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to dual-boot this machine with Windows XP, and the reason is: Vista is making Halo:Combat Evolved (my favorite online game) very slow at 20fps. This may be nVidia's fault, but people who use XP and have the same (or closely similar) hardware and drivers as me don't have this problem. I have 50GB of free hard drive space. Windows Vista is my current OS. I love Halo so much I am willing to drop some more cash into my computer to dual boot with Vista and XP so I can play it s'more.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my work pc (XP Pro) when I drag an item from my desktop to "My Documents" the item is moved. On my home pc (XP Home) if I do the same thing, the item is copied to "My Document" and I then have to delete the original left on my desktop. What do I need to do so that I can "Move" items into My folders instead of copying them?
I've had some trouble last week were I got the BSOD, due to some problem with the registry, I couldn't find a solution and so bought a new SATA hard drive and installed XP on it (as i couldn't reinstall it on my old one for fear of losing all my files etc). Now however, after moving all my files into the new harddrive (where XP now seems to be), I want to format the old C: drive but the computer management console isn't allowing me to as the "system" partition is still on the old C: drive. In short, is there anyway to move that partition to the new F: drive where the boot partition is?
