Missing Startup And Shutdown Sounds
Jan 5, 2007
I am using a windows XP professional SP2 on a Fujitsu laptop. My windows always starts up and shuts down silently although the startup and shutdown tones are turned on in the control panel under sound schemes. All other windows sounds are normal. The speakers work fine. How do I get the sounds back. Does this mean there is any intrinsic problem in the registry?

I upgraded from SE to XP home. SB Live sound card and updated driver work fine in all sounds EXCEPT on Windows start up and shutdown, there are no music.Check the .wav files and when I click on them directly or in the Control Panel/Sounds, they play just fine. But not on startup or shutdown of windows. They worked just fine in SE.

I use xp pro and have Microsoft PLUS installed wich gives me a few extra themes to choose from. Everything works great except when i log in or out of windows i dont get any sounds, no matter what theme i use. It used to work fine and i am not sure exactly when it stopped.
I checked my sounds configuration and i can play the start up and shutdown sounds by testing them but they wont work when actually starting or shutting down windows. Even if i just use the regular XP theme i still dont get any sound.

I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.
I will try to explain the process on what I did so it can help you experts figure out this dilemma that I'm having. My old drive an IDE 100GB IBM primary drive was partitioned into 3 parts: c: 30GB FAT32 primary d: 30GB FAT32 " e: 30gb FAT32 "

Now that i removed most of the malware my computer had in the past 2 weeks or so, another problem emerged, a slow computer. The computer was much faster before i downloaded these hoards of anti-malware programs such as SuperAntiSpyware, WinPFind3u, Avenger, HostsXpert, CCLeaner, and HiJackThis (in addition to Spybot S & D and AdAware which i originally had. I Once measured the time it takes for the computer to restart.

Recently developed a problem with very slow shutdown and startup both. With no programs running, it takes about a minute and a half to shut down, about two to boot up, and about five to load programs after I select user. During the program load, the hard drive is running like crazy, with Task Manager showing a lot of use by explorer.exe, ctfmon, and one svchost entry. At times, one of the two latter ones will jump as high as 98% usage. I tried disabling every startup program with Task Manager while disconnected from the net, deleted restore points, defragged, and the delay improved only slightly. In addition to AVG a/v, Spybot, and Adaware I have run CCleaner and the full version of Registry Mechanic with no improvement. I have gone down the HijackThis list using the cheat sheet in this forum and deleted a couple of suspicious items, that didn't help either. On the attached startup list, I have no clue what the fourth item with no command listed might be. I have recently added an external hard drive for storage and backup and a new monitor, fwiw, but the problem seems to have started at some point after that. The web sites in the HJT log are all legitimate.

For sometime my user profile has had the problem of no windows music playing at startup and shutdown but I can live with that.However. I just tried to switch to the guest profile and received a message that it could not find a profile and to be sure I was connected to the network. I then created a new profile and got the message that "Windows canot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default. It would appear that I have corrupt files in profile and the only apparant solution is to foremat. I say that becasue I can't find a fix anywhere.

Working on a laptop for one of my friends, and came across few problems I couldn't fix. When attempting to properly shutdown or restart, xp (SP2) hangs on "Saving your settings"I searched this problem and found many similar problems, but no fixes. Most sites/forums reffered the problems to SP1.When turning on the computer, after login, it hangs, then crashes (taskbar dissapears as well as desktop icons)My quickfix i've been using while removing the viruses/spyware from the machine is kill explorer.exe and restart it, this crashes many services (and viruses) that were running on the machine.it starts fine in safemode, but still doesn't restart/shutdown and I don't know how to fix it in safemode anyways. The computer is fully updated XP SP2.

I shut down my computer by holding down the power button, instead of waiting for windows to close the open programs and shut down properly When I got back, I turned the computer on, and the boot process was severely messed up. After the animated black Windows XP screen, it goes black for a few minutes, then the blue screen that says 'windows is starting up' (or something similar) appears, but stays for another 5 or so minutes. Then, the 'Welcome' blue screen comes up but stays for even longer. When Windows finally loads, the wallpaper loads, then the desktop icons (note programs' correct icons don't show, only window default 'exe' icon), then the task bar, but the task bar remains white and only has the start button, quick launch and clock no other icons show.It stays like this indefinitely, with the CPU light flashing and the computer seemingly loading. I left it on all night and it got no further. When in that state, anything I click on (including ctrl-alt-del) takes about 5+ minutes to do.I tried safe mode - it took so long to load I gave upI tried ERD Commander - not even that would load past a blank screen with a cursor.I tried booting from the Windows CD - the reinstall option isn't there and it doesn't spot the previous installation.I am using Windows XP Home SP2.Is there a solution or do I have to format and reinstall?

I noticed some irregular occurences on my system, starting off with “My Computer” opening the same folder at startup (C:program files ero I think) and taking a LOT longer to shutdown/restart than normal (anywhere between 5 & 15mins to shutdown). Occasionally ckdisk would run at boot and after analysing would go through the process of recovering orphaned files (on both C: and F:

Somehow or other I've deleted two DLLs that prevent Windows XP from booting up.These are ODBC32.DLL and MSGINA.DLL - I get two seperate error messages saying they are missing and then the PC tries to reboot again.
I have tried booting in safe mode and get the same problem.I have a recovery CD but wish to avoid reinstalling windows and all that entails. I have found reference and source elsewhere to booting from startup floppy discs but have no access to a PC with a disc drive to create them.Is it possible to create a boot CD for windows XP or can anyone suggest another solution?

trying to install certain software. I don't know if it came with it, or with something I downloaded from it.. but still.. some adware hit me. It was "ucmore search" or something like that... I was getting a new firefox window with ads on it every single minute. When it got me tired, I installed Ad-aware and run it. Automatically quarantine everything it spotted.Even then, the problem was still there. I didn't care, since I really had to get with other things.I tried to install some software trial But it didn't let me install it, it popped up a message saying I was missing js32.dll.I rebooted my lap, and now every time I log in to windows, all that appears is my wallpaper. No taskbar, no start menu, nothing.

This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.
