Merging Users - Windows Corrupted
Dec 31, 2006
XP was corrupted and caused a Memory dump while loading. I had to reinstall the program. Now I have multiple personality disorder in that I have at least two sets of users that I would like to merge as I only have one of me. How can I get the program to merge all users into one? Is it possible? If I can't get it done I will just wipe the whole drive losing valuable data and start over. I really don't want to do that but I can't find half of my stuff now so...

i partitioned the drive when i first installed win xp. C: was already win98se and i thot i'd keep it around a while just in case., i
had the dual boot workin' fine. but whenever i checked in on ol' win98 i got the error message about...whatever. i didnt care cause i never did have a case wher i needed it. so i just always booted to the winxp, which was the second partitioned, named E: and i figuerd one day i would just lose that win98 and make the whole drive winxp. the occassion arose when E: winxp wouldnt boot, error: corrupted system file. it seemed like a "good day to die" so i loaded win xp (pro) into that first partition, C:,and it just fit but with little room to spare. in fact, not enough to do anything, including loading antivirus. i acn still read everything on the E: logical partition, but i dont get to boot from there. i have a couple big eexternal HDD's oneon that machine, the desktype machine (250GB) and one on the laptop (400GB) which runs win xp. i can resort to moving things around, probably having to re-install a lot, but i have tried re-sizing the C: and E:,using Partition Magic (8.0) to no avail. it makes no changes. i've tried enlarging C: to use up the unused space in E:. when i re-boot,nothing has changed. tried merging the partitions, error is differnt cluster sizes, one is 2k, the other 4k. have tried to change the cluster sizes both ways. still no change.

My friend recently gave me his computer after buying a new one. It's actually pretty decent by totally crippled by viruses and stuff. When he gave it to me, he had Ubuntu and XP installed on it. The XP would no longer start (blue screen) and I couldn't use Ubuntu for what I wanted to do. I reinstalled windows, however I didn't know which partition was Ubuntu and which was the broken Windows. It didn't really matter to me at the time, so I just picked one and overwrote it.Now, I've realized that I made the wrong choice. It claims I have two hard drives in my now working version of Windows: C: and D:. D: is the one I'm acutally using, but it's only 20 GB large while the C: with the bad version of Windows is 150 GB. I don't need any information off of C:, so is there some way I can just delete it and add the extra hard drive space to the partition I actually use?

I run Windows XP. When I initially got my computer, it was shared by several different people, and I set it up with several different users. Now I am the only one who uses this computer, and I'd like to delete the other users. When I try to delete the other users by going through the control panel and following the instructions, everything is fine until I get to the actual "delete this user". When I click on it, it pauses, and nothing happens. When I hit cntrl-alt-del, I get a message that mhsta.exe is not responding. I have googled this, but I am at a loss as how to how to fix this. I have restarted the computer several times (for other reasons), but I am still not able to delete the other users.

The group USERS message says.."Users are prevented from making accidental or intentional system-wide changes. Thus, Users can run certified applications, but not most legacy applications".Is there a way i can add to the certified applications? Programs run fine if I add Domain Users, or individual logon names to the Power Users group. But I don't want to do that.

I think my windows XP is corrupt. When I am in any browser my computer completely freezes and I have to shut the power off in order to restart. If I reinstall XP will I loose all of my programs, etc. I have never done this before and am a littled worried about doing so. I have done everything else I can think of. My system is clean otherwise, just locks up when browsing.

My box runs Windows XP Service Pack 2 32-bit home edition with AMD Athlon, Maxtor (ribbon cable'd, not SATA) with 3 sticks of 512MB DDR2 RAM. I haven't touched the hardware in about a month and a half.
Symptoms:
Shows the windows XP pro login randomally; once logged in, background shows, explorer.exe doesn't run, and no windows hot keys respond. (every 1/8 boots)
Services and programs randomally quit out and will not run. Restarting them results in another crash

I use Windows XP and I'm the only person who uses this computer and, therefore, only 1 user profile. But there are still 12 different links all over the computer to the various My Document folders and Owner/Nathan(my user name)/Shared/All Users folders and even some folders that change names based on their moods. So, is there any way to get rid of the excessive links and make it so there is only 1 set of folders located in something like c:/My Documents?

To use this setting, type the fully qualified path and name of the file that stores the wallpaper image. You can type a local path, such as C:Windowswebwallpaperhome.jpg or a UNC path, such as \ServerShareCorp.jpg. If the specified file is not available when the user logs on, no wallpaper is displayed. Users cannot specify alternative wallpaper. You can also use this setting to specify that the wallpaper image be centered, tiled, or stretched. Users cannot change this specification.

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All UsersDesktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All UsersDesktop work ok, just not any new ones! The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

I'm using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, and have two partitions. C, which is only 2GB, and D, which uses the rest of my disk. Unfortunately, C got full very quickly, and I now need to use programs that will install to no drive letter other than C - programs for which there is no room.Is there any way to simply merge these two partitions, or must I format and delete the partitions?

My daughter recently acquired a computer with XP Pro and it came with 3.0 GB on the C drive and 1.2 GB on the E drive. It also was in FAT 32 on both partitions. Using the disk management tool I converted all the files to NTFS, so far so good. The C drive was down to 500 MB free and all the space on E drive free. Using the disk management tool I was able to delete the partition for E drive assuming the unused space would go to the C drive. I now have 1.2 GB of unallocated space that I can't get into C drive. I downloaded Partition Manager 6.0 but it couldn't get the space over either.

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

Over the years, I've saved a lot of backups of my files to various locations -- Hard Disks, Tape Backup, Zip Drives.Looking through the backups I see that I've backed up some files dozens of times. And some files only once or twice. Additionally, I've reorganized some files. So, for example, "auntbetty.jpg" might be in "My Pictures" in one backup, but in "My PicturesFamilyReunion 2003" in another. I would like to reformat my old backup media and begin to reuse it. But I don't want to accidently erase something that exists only on the backup. Is there a program that can scan all my media, figure out what files are duplicates, and automatically save only one version? Even if they are in different directories? What if there are multiple versions of the same file? Is there a utility that can "bundle" them together somehow, omitting exact duplicates but keeping together the old versions? All told, these backups comprise tens of thousands of files... no way I could go through them by hand!

For some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

Now at the XP Welcome Screen, none of the users show up; I had 4 before I reinstalled XP. If I cnt-alt-del, I get a login screen with one of the users already in the user box. I never set a password for that user, but the login asks for one. A blank just gets an incorrect password response.

What I can see is that when I look at 'Documents and settings' there are extra users directories.
These are:
All Users
All Users.Windows
Defaults Users
Default Users.Windows
I now have 3 Network Services NT
I also have two directories of me.
I can delete them using explorer.
