Installer CleanUp Utility To Facilitate An Uninstall
Nov 24, 2008
I upgraded to Office 2003 from its predecessor, which seemed not to delete/uninstall any of the old Office 10 files (Office XP Pro). I took a system restore point, and uninstalled Office XP Pro from Control Panel Add/Remove, successfully.Due to a totally unrelated software program corruption, I reverted to the system restore point, which of course put the Office 10 files back. Now I get error "the patch package could not be opened" when trying to again unstall it. MS says to use this above named utility which will remove the installation info for programs installed by the WIN installer, so that you can "start the installation, upgrade or uninstall over". Has anyone had experience with this utility? I want to "uninstall over". How can this be done if the "installation files" are removed? I do not want to to be forced re-install Office XP Pro (the predecessor), especially having a successfuly MS OFFFICE 2003 installation up and running. If it should "force" that path, I feel that would get things in a real knot.

When using the Disk Cleanup, if you never want to "Compress Old Files" (which is often annoying and takes a long time) follow this tip: Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesCompress Old FilesOn the Edit menu, click Export, in case you change your mind.On the Edit menu again now click Delete. Thanks to Microsoft for this tip:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812930

I have an HP computer that got a bug on it. I had to recover with my recovery disc. Before the bug I had Windows Installer Clean Up utility on my computer that I used, like when Adobe Reader screwed up and I couldn't download it again because of remnants of Adobe still on the computer that I couldn't get rid of. Now I have that problem with Java. After the recovery Java wouldn't work. So I deleted it in the Add/Delete. But there are remnants that won't delete. Now I can't find the Installer Cleanup utility. Can someone tell me where I could find "Windows Installer Clean Up" utility for Windows XP

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

How do I know what stuff I need to keep, and what I can delete? I have a HP (a305w) w/XP. It seems very slow and freezes up a lot. I have to use task manager to end task more and more often. Sometimes I get error messages something about cont. to run scripts on this page. (When it comes up again I'll get the exact words.) And I'm not sure how the auto updates are supposed to work but it doesn't seem to be working, right. There are a lot of updates listed on the installuninstall list. There are also alot of proccess running, but can I copy them,or do I have to type each one? What other info. might help? Oh-yeah, I'm a single mother of 4. I don't have much $$ to spend on downloads.

I performed Disk Cleanup several times to delete all the files in, "Compress Old Files," however, it continues to show 1 KB. I don't know the identification and location of the sticking file. This just occurred recently as Disk Cleanup has always deleted the unwanted files before. How do I delete it manually and where can I find it? Why won't Disk Cleanup delete it? Is it fixable?HP Laptop Windows XP Home Edition.

It's like it's stuck on stupid or something. I had to go in and manually delete some files, but I am afraid to go to far with that.

Cleanmgr.exe is designed to clear unnecessary files from your computer's hard disk. You can use command-line options to specify that Cleanmgr.exe cleans up certain files. You can then schedule the task to run at a specific time by using the Scheduled Tasks tool.To start the Disk Cleanup tool, either run the Cleanmgr.exe command, or click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. Disk Cleanup supports the following command-line options: /d driveletter: - This option specifies the drive that you want Disk Cleanup to clean. /sageset: n - This option displays the Disk Cleanup Settings dialog box and also creates a registry key to store the settings that you select. The n value, which is stored in the registry, allows you to specify tasks for Disk Cleanup to run. The n value can be any integer value from 0 to 65535. To have all of the options available when you use the /sageset option, you might need to specify the drive where Windows is installed. /sagerun: n - This option runs the specified tasks that are assigned to the n value if you use the sageset option. For example, in Scheduled Tasks, you could run the following command after you run the cleanmgr /sageset:11 command: cleanmgr /sagerun:11This command runs Disk Cleanup and includes the options that you specified with the cleanmgr /sageset:11 command.

I acquired an 80gb external HD from a freind. It is not clean it so I want compress a lot his files and folders and leave one to side for while till its safe to delete it all. I have permission to delete everything. But I am being a little cautious. The trouble is one of the directory is huge, about 20gb, with many subdirectories and folders. There many instances when whole list of folders are empty. There could be 100s or 1000s of these empty folders. Is there a freeware filemanager with a filter that I can use to isolate all the empty folders and delete them. And how would you use the filter. I would then be able to defrag the HD.

Yesterday I had an error message: 16-Bit MS-Dos Subsystem C:Documents and Settings.......DesktopDisk Cleanup.Ink The NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction.with the options to either close or ignore. The ignore didn't do anything. I right clicked on "disc cleanup" and checked users and it was set to the administer. I even tried a different user but that didn't work either.I have run three virus scans: AVG 8.5,SUPERAnti spyware, and Malwarebytes' Anti Malware. I tried Hijackthis but have no idea what/how to doi with it. I have run registery cleaner, and a few other things that I have found on this site. Now I am getting an error message: C:WindowsSystem 32cleanmgr.exe is not a valid Win 32 application.

Wow, this is kind of odd I ran disk cleanup and noticed that the size of the temporary files it wants to delete totals about 56 GBs, which is pretty much everything on my HD.It did this once before, only it just deleted Windows, which is pretty ironic.I've tried running chkdsk with the r parameter, and it found nothing, so I'm not sure exactly what to do with a Windows-specific issue like this, especially seeing as I have no restore points other than the latest one, which was just before I found this all out. Reformatting is NOT an option.

How to make disk cleanup work properly? It used to work. Now afte you selected/checked what you want to clean up, such as recycle bin and temporary internet files, then it only goes to four or five bars and never completes. Does anyone out there have an
answer to this problem without causing a virus from downloading something to fix the problem?
