ICQ Startup / No Connection

Aug 12, 2002

It seems lots of people are having problems with ICQ and WinXP not finding a network/internet connection upon XP startup (especially those on DSL modems like myself, or those with LAN/T1's, etc.)The Problem is that when XP loads, ICQ pops up and says "no connection detected". This occurs despite the fact that 'Net Detect Agent' and 'automatically connect to internet when no connection present' are checked. The previous solution was to move Net Detect Agent *out* of the Startup folder, put a shortcut on the Desktop, and use that when you wanted to connect.I was browsing through the boards here and came across a thread discussing this problem: http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/board/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=245They did not come across a solution, however it did give me an idea..I tried it .. and it WORKS!! Read on...Here's how to do it (am using WinXP Pro):1. Go to the Group Policy Editor (Run->"gpedit.msc")2. Under 'User Configuration', click "Administartive Templates"3. Click 'System'-> 'Logon'4. In the window on the right, double-click on "Run these programs at user logon"5. Make sure 'Enabled' is checked, then click 'Show'6. You'll now want to add ICQ's Net Agent Detect to the list (which is probably empty unless you've already been in here). To do this, first locate on your HD the exact location of 'NDetect.exe'.Example: C:InternetICQNDetect.exe Click 'Add', then type the filename & path of the above file7.

Click 'OK', 'OK', and 'OK' again to exit. The next few steps are important: 8. Now make sure that there are NO traces of ICQ or Net Detect Agent in your Programs->Startup folder. If there are, delete them from Startup.9. Start up ICQ, and go to 'Connections'(Main->Preferences->Connections->General tab). Under 'Launch' make sure 'Launch ICQ at startup' is NOT checked.10. Click 'OK'. Disconnect from Internet if connected.REBOOT.If everything goes properly, you should now see the Net Detect Agent appear in the system tray as WinXP starts up the desktop. When you connect to the Net, it magically disappears.. to be replaced with the ICQ 'flower' which will shortly find a connection and voila!

Used Black Vipers Startup Guide Paused Dsl Connection?

Feb 25, 2005

I've done virus/spyware etc. scans and it's all clean first of all.I used black vipers startup guide to trim down my services that start on boot and it seems to go pretty quickly and that's all fine. Then when I try double click the icon that brings up my dsl connection it pauses. There doesn't seem to be any disc activity, but when I bring the cursor to the taskbar it turns into an hourglass so obviously it's waiting for something.I've brought up task manager during this and I see that it's loading some more avg components as well as imapi.exe which appears and then disappears.

Cable Connection Wont Work: Internet Connection Breaks After 15 Minutes?

May 25, 2006

my cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

Internet Connection Wizard - Dialup Connection

Jun 24, 2005

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Home on a friends computer, but when I went
to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.

Remote Desktop Connection: "virtual Private Network Connection"?

Jul 11, 2005

I've been trying to use Remote Desktop to connect from my home computer to my office network's machines. I've followed all the instructions except for the part where it talks about getting a "virtual private network connection". Not sure if I have this part done right. Not even sure if this is the problem. Is there something that needs to be set up before being able to connect from a home computer to an office machine?

Msconfig Normal Startup, Stop Running At Startup, And Change Back

May 16, 2007

I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.

There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.

If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.

The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.

If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.

I would like to accomplish this:

1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.

2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.

3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.

Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?

To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.

Startup Problem, Already Disabled All Unnecessary Startup Items...

May 8, 2010

My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)

Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p282/sw1sh1/LAC.jpg
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...tification.jpg

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.

Msconfig Keeps Opening After Startup, Having Disabled Startup Items

Jun 10, 2010

Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.

However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.

-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;

-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;

-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."

-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.

If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!

Computer Slow On Startup - Particularly At Startup

Apr 27, 2006

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?
