Way To Change The Ownership Of Files

Oct 25, 2009

A friend has asked me to look at their computer the other day and it turns out that the only thing in the computer that is working as it should is the HDD, so i have taken the hard disk out and connected it to my laptop via a usb adaptor but i am not able to see some of the files. I am guessing this is because i am not the owner of the files and folders. Is there away to change this because they are wanting me to get the pictures off as they have not backed up the latest ones.

Some Files From My Old Account Lost Ownership

Jul 1, 2005

I just recently upgraded from XP Home to XP pro, and some files from my old account lost ownership, I know how to take ownership and set the permissions for each file. But, I was wondering if there was a way to take ownership of all the files on the computer without having to do each one individually? I can hightlight a few at once, but all the files I need to take ownership and full control over would take a month. Is there any way to do it to all of them at once???

No Folder Ownership - Accesss Denied?

Oct 14, 2007

Ever since I set it up I have not been able to access the user profile folders on the server.
Yesterday I had to get into one of them (A security issue!(another story)) And eventually I found out that the reason I was getting the message

'Access Denied'

Was because know one actually owned them. Once I took ownership of them, I could then add my user to the permissions list, and get into them. (I have to do this for every profile and subfolder in there.)

VIsta File Ownership - Refusing To Recognize

Jul 27, 2009

I did so buying a dell and also bought a docking station for the SATA harddrive so I could copy stuff on tothe new PC. My new machine runs vista (your rules forbid me to tell you what I think of Vista by now). Vista insisted on taking ownership of the files on the disk before it would let me touch them let alone copy them. I let it do its stuff and it changed ownership to the administrator on vista(incidentally the same username and password as teh admin on the old machine). So far so good but then a bit of good luck struck. A friend of a friend fixed the old laptop for me - it had been a blown relay and a faulty power supply. He fixed the relay and I ordered a new power supply. Beers exchanged hands

Taking Ownership - Disk Has Tons Of Bad Sectors

Aug 30, 2005

I'm using XP home and just added my old ntfs disk to my system. I can't access certain files because of a, "access denied", error message. The disk has tons of bad sectors on it and I can't take it with me into safe mode so I can take ownership of it with the admin account. Any suggestions on how to get to my ntfs files without going into safe mode? In normal mode, I don't have an administrator account, just my account with my name which has administrator rights. I know the admin account is still there, but I can't get into safe mode with the ntfs disk.

How Big Can FAT32 Be?

May 5, 2007

I want to be able to use the same external drive for both systems. Maxstor 1 Terabyte Firewire 800 drive. I note that FAT32 can be used up to 2 Terabyte, so I made 2 partitions, one 120Gb for pure Mac use in HFS+, and the balance of about 850Gb in FAT32 for either. I used a Linux LiveCD (Ubuntu 7) and Gnome Partition Editor to do the partitioning. Linux seems to see the partitions OK. However WXP sees the partition as "Unknown" and offers to format it in NTFS. I know WXP can read/write FAT32 bigger than 32Gb, as I am using an external 2.5" 120Gb drive on WXP formatted as per above method, purely in FAT32, with no read or write problems. To save me performing multiple re-partitioning and re-booting as trial and error, I wonder if anyone can inform me of the largest FAT32 partition that Windows XP Pro can read/write to before if throws a fit.

Can't Seem To Run Win On C / When Partition Is FAT32?

Aug 15, 2010

I have an Acer rebranded netbook and have wiped the existing partition on the hard disk.It was NTFS with Windows XP Home, and I have deleted it and recreated as 2 partitions both as FAT32.The netbook still has a hidden partition at the beginning of the disk called PQSERVICE which contains the restore data for everything. So I ran this to test it, and it restored everything back to default, BUT the restoration process automatically changed the first partition back to NTFS. It didn't effect the 2nd partition which remained as FAT32.I had considered using something like Partition Magic to convert the filesystem of this first partition back to FAT32, but am worried in case later down the line I would end up with data corruption due to this - can anyone confirm?

My question is why is it suddenly doing that and does that signify a problem? Do you need a HJT log of my system?
Thanks!

NTFS External HD Is FAT32

Feb 22, 2007

XP installed recently is working well, but there's a problem. Startup was taking a long time, and once the black screen w/ XP logo came up, it soon went away and just left a blank black screen. This time I waited, and window came up saying system would do a disk check. It did so quickly, and message said "F" drive (external Seagate 160MB HD), is FAT32. When installing XP, I chose NTFS. There are many docs & files on the external HD. In addition to installing XP, also installed Office 2003, a newer version than what the word & excel docs on external HD were created in. Previous OS was WinMe, current RAM is 512, 1 MHz processor, Dell desktop. Once system did the disk check, it stayed on that screen, so I shut down, turned off the external HD, and restarted. Everything came up fine, and very quickly. Is it possible to convert any of the files on the external HD to NTFS? Or is there a way to access, edit those files that won't conflict with my new OS?

Convert To NTFS - FAT32

Dec 27, 2005

Yesterday I upgraded my old computer to Xp, but I did so on only one partition, and I left It at FAT 32 just to see if it would work. Now Iam going to convert to NTFS because everything went fine and now I just want to free up space and reformatt the hard drive, basically getting rid of all the information on it and starting fresh. I just want to know if I can reformatt, and the steps for doing so if I can.I only have one partition on this computer that is why I am concerned about the reformatting thing. I tried to formatt when it was still FAT32 but it was saying that i needed to close all remaining things that were using this system.? I am going to convert to NTFS reguardless I just want to free up all my disk space that is being stolen from the old 98 system files.

The remainder of the instructions in this article seem so simple once I get past the 'boot this floppy' part.

Convert from fat32 to ntfs:From the command line: CONVERT C: /FS:NTFSHowever, the best way in my opinion is a 3rd party product such as Partition Magic (version 7.0 or later). Lets you do everything from within the GUI and it's a delight to work with. Without Partition Magic, this is a one-way process (you cannot convert back to FAT without a reformat)

If all else fails could you guys recommend any (preferably free) software to retrieve files from a corrupt fat 32 drive I have heard there is software that will scan the drive right down at a byte level and retrieve particular types of files ie jpeg or avi identifying them from their byte structure

Store Data From A NTSF HD Onto A FAT32 HD?

Sep 2, 2005

I have a HP Pavilion a250Y running a Pentium 4 with WinXP Home.

The "installed" 80GB HD has had it's boot sector scrambled and will no longer boot up. I installed a second 20GB HD from a previous HP computer that I now have up and running with Win XP Home. I want to reformat the 80GB HD and would like to temporarily store data from this drive onto the 20GB HD. The main concern I have is that the larger drive is formated in NTSF and the smaller in FAT32.

Questions:

#1 Can I store the NTSF data on the FAT32 drive just to keep it protected with only the intent to transfer it back to the 80GB HD after reformating?
