Poops Brick - Decides Not To Reinstall - Non ACPI Mode

May 15, 2007

I accidentally formatted over my XP installation (should...have...used...gparted....not...partition...magic...) about a week ago. Fortunately I keep my files on a seperate partition. I put in the XP disk, and install as normal. Good, it reboots. XP logo shows for a split second, then..."Motherboard does not have ACPI support...blah blah blah http://hardware-update.com blah blah blah". Fine. Restart setup, in non ACPI mode. Reboot. Yay it works. Install videocard drivers, reboot. Now it just restarts after showing the XP logo for a split second. Damnit! Put in CD. Reinstall. Forgot to put on non-ACPI mode, get error again. Damnit. Restart install in non-ACPI mode....BAD_POOL bluescreen. Slam head on desk. Insert ubuntu cd. Install ubuntu. Go to techguy. Make post about XP install issues. Ask for help.

I'm going to a massive LAN party this weekend, and having XP would be nice, because I want to play Counter-strike, and not just UT and Doom. Thanks a bunch. Oh, hardware specs, right. AMD 4800+ 939, ASUS P5ND2 Platinum (or something) SLi, nVidia 7800 GTX, 1 GB 2-2-2-5 OCZ RAM, Antec NeoPower 480, 200 GB HDD, Linksys WMP54GS (stupid ubuntu not having ndiswrapper installed by default, stupid ndiswrapper refusing to install under ubuntu...), Creative xFi XtremeAudio.

Changed HAL Driver From ACPI To Standard PC"causing Non Boot

Jan 23, 2007

I changed the above setting in my device manager hoping to fix an annoying stutter problem caused with media player when my wireless signal would go out of range. I remembered changing the irq settings in win2k to solve conflicts on that system, but found that the options is not available in xp. A quick web search lead to a site which reproduced a knowledge base article from microsoft. Only, the article was truncated in a way such that the dangers of said action were not published. The drive boots up to the XP OS screen, hangs, blue screens, the end.
With my problem drive set up as a slave, is there a way to change the settings back, or manually cut and paste Hkeys, or system folders or the like to restore the drive to it's previous state? Seems logical same computer with the same installation of xp pro sp2

ACPI Bios Not Fully Compliant With The ACPI Specification

Nov 7, 2006

I just opened this computer I got from tigerdirect.com and I was loading windows 2000 pro onto it...It loads half way and I get this message:

ACPI Bios not fully compliant with the ACPI specification.

So I did what I read and When Setup starts again, press F7 (not F6) when you see the "Press F6 if you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver" screen.

Windows automatically disables the installation of the ACPI HAL and installs the Standard PC HAL.

So win2k is installed but I cant seem to get onto the internet and update any of the drivers.

THe computer is a IBM netvista 8307 model. They had some deal on it awhile back for less than $150..so I couldnt pass it up.

Im kinda lost right now..not sure what the problem is.

I did add a new video card before I installed the OS. could that have been the problem?
If so..how would I go about fixing this.

Reinstall USB Driver?

Aug 3, 2005

I got the following error:Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. What I did was I just deleted some part of the registry related to the USB (HKLM Enum and Services parts) and didn't do some backup (Yeah I know.)thinking that maybe the controller will be installed automatically upon hardware change scan. Anybody can tell me how to fix this without reinstalling WinXP? Right-clicking to update driver in Device Manager doesn't work.

Corrupt Keyboard Driver / How Do Reinstall?

Dec 3, 2008

I'm running XP Pro SP3 and have recently encountered a problem whereby both the mouse and the keyboard freeze the first time that the keyboard is used. (The system still seems to be running because it performs a normal shutdown when I hit the power button.) Googling suggested uninstalling the keyboard from device manager and then letting it reinstall; however, the add new hardware wizard fails saying that the device driver is corrupt or missing. How do I reinstall the keyboard drivers from the XP Pro CD? I've tried letting the hardware wizard search the cd drive, but it doesn't find anything.I think I had the same problem on my notebook, but I only solved it by reverting to an old Ghost image, because having to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to log on meant I couldn't even access the system with the mouse.

Hibernation In A Loop - Disabling ACPI

Sep 19, 2009

I messed with some setting in the window for display properties>screen saver>Power Option Properties. Don't remember what I did, but the next time I restarted the comp. it loads windows then immediately after the startup screen goes away it says it's going into hibernation and does.It will stay on in Safe Mode, but the checkmark that tells hib to be on or not is not there. I've tried disabling ACPI in the BIOS but that doesn't fix it.There has to be some setting in the registry that can be changed to disable hiber, but no one seems to know how.

Reboots At Shutdown - NO ERRORS - Phoenix Bios Have ACPI On?

I have just: Done a successful repair/rebuild of XP Home Did a CHKDSK /r/f on my System drive Defragmented my system drive with PerfectDisk Read and applied recommentations on changes so that I would see errors when my system re-boots Yet, When I shutdown my PC, it will shotdown, then re-boot again, without the benefit of a error messagw to help me figure out why it is re-booting instead of shutting down and powering off. Unknown Device On Microsoft ACPI / Compliant Embedded Controller

Jun 23, 2002

I installed a fresh copy of WIN2000 on my IBM Thinkpad A21m but I am having a problem setting up a device in Device Mangager. I have no idea what is going on.

When i reboot the laptop it prompts me that it has found a new piece of hardware and it wants me to install the driver for it. The problem is that I have no idea what device it is since all the devices that should be working are working - so i don't know what to do.
The clues that I have noticed that might help:

- the laptop takes a LOOOONG time to boot up (3 or 4 mins), and is sort of sluggish in operation (compared to how it ran when i bought it)

- my internet connection is super slow ( I have a DSL router that serves 3 computers incl. mine, the other two have XP and everythign runs smooth)

- the unknown device says it is located on the the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller"

Would any one know what Device this "Unknown Device" is??? I just need to know so i can install the driver so my system can run properly.

Can Reinstall Help & Support Or Reinstall / Repair Win

Jul 23, 2005

My Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

Format & Reinstall, Or Reinstall Over Existing

Apr 5, 2005

I've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

Install Problem ACPI Problem

Mar 12, 2010

Hi

A8N SLI
1 GB Ram
6600 GT

Here goes, I had a dual boot system then I deinstalled Windows 7. I believe that Windows 7 leaves the boot loader so i ended up with.

Hard Drive 2: Bootable: Opening up the choise of OS between Windows 7 (even though Not installed hence my beliefe taht Win 7 leaves behind the boot loader). So on this screen I choose "earlier versions of windows and then it boots:
Hard Drive 1: Which has XP.

Since I wanted to clean this up I am trying a new install. Therefore I removed Hard Drive 2 and ran Win XP pro setup. Foolishly I believed someone who told me that there would be no problems. That XP would make HArd Drive one bootable and that then XP would install correctly.
I should perhaps note that I used a new copy of XP with service packs as I thought it would make more sense than the XP I've used previously which was the first version of XP.

Firstly, XP formatted the hard drive. Detected no problems. Then it copied across files. No Problem. Then on first loading XP I got the error message "Your BIOS" is not ACPI compliant. Contact Hardware Update.com to get update.

I have installed XP many many times on my system with exactly the same hardware and I have never got this message. Therefore I thought that maybe it was something to do with Windows 7 affecting the BIOS or maybe that XP with service packs conflicts with my motherboard. So I tried an earlier version of XP Pro that didn't have the service packs included.

Same message came up at the same time. On first running XP it gets to the Microsoft logo and then the same message comes up "BIOS not ACPI compliant."

At this point I thought that maybe the best thing would be to remove the CMOS battery. Clear the CMOS and therefore any bios setting would revert back to default and I could then proceed.

At this point when I rebooted the BIOS failed to detect the hard drive at all. I replaced it with another hard drive but still the BIOS doesn;t see a hard drive. I tried changing the SATA cables, changing which SATA port the drive connects too. I've now tested the hard drives in another PC and they are working.

So to recap:

BIOS doesn;t detect hard Drive.
Even when it did the XP installalation freezes at the fist run of XP saying BIOS not ACPI compliant.

As noted the hard drives worked before . I've reinstalled many times and never had any problems.

I am a total loss how to proceed. I've thought about flashing the BIOS with an update but since I've installed XP with exactly the same hard drive why should XP suddenly talk about ACPI. The BIOS not seeing a hard drive at all is weird. Even though I've changed SATA connectors on the hard drives and which connect to the Motherboard I'd expect it to see something.

ANy help very very much appreciated

Need To Reinstall OS

Aug 20, 2007

A possible client of mine has a system with three hard drives. He was not able to install the updates from Windows Update, so somehow, he installed the OS again on another hard drive and booted up with it (not sure how he did that), and it asked him to authenticate the software by buying a new key (the OS was already installed with the same disk and key on the C drive). When he rebooted, it booted from the orginal hard drive (drive C) and original installation of the OS, which was unable to install the Windows Updates. Basically, the OS on the C drive either needs to be repaired, or it needs to be reinstalled. And the drive that has the second instance of the OS needs to be wiped out and formatted.

The question is, if the repair does not fix it and the OS needs to be reinstalled, if the second instance of the OS is wiped out, will it still ask him to buy another key? My guess is no, since he will be reinstalling it, but I'm not sure if the second install triggered it so that any future installs, whether they are on the original system or not, will be asked to be authenticated.

HP OEM Help With Reinstall

Jan 17, 2010

Alright, so I acquired a computer to use as my HTPC; the only issue is that it is an HP computer that has an OEM copy of XP Home installed, and it is full of crap and has so many corrupt files it makes my head hurt to simply think about. A fresh install is necessary, but I can't do it because I don't have the recovery cd. It has the product key plain as day on the side, so I only need the software to run it. I can get this via torrents, I'm sure, but the only one I've found so far is an OEM copy with SP3. I think the computer is about 5 years old, and I'm pretty sure only SP 1 was around at that time. Did Windows use the same algorithm for SP1-SP3? I.E. will my cd key work with this OEM SP3 cd? I don't want to uninstall everything and then be left with absolutely no OS.

Can't Reinstall From CD

Sep 12, 2007

To make a really long story short, about a month ago I got infected with malware and it totally screwed up my computer. Of the many problems I have, whenever I try to open an application I get a prompt to choose what application I want to use to open it. For example, if I try to open Word, it will paradoxically ask me what I want to use to open it. Sometimes choosing the same application from the list works, sometimes it doesn't. Of the numerous other problems I have, I can't open many critical files such as Control Panel. I've tried fixes such as System Restore but nothing works. I want to do a clean install of XP, but when I put the CD in my drive, the prompt screen loads but when I click on "install XP" simply nothing happens.

SP2 Will Not Reinstall

Jan 22, 2007

Long story short my comp got junked up with crap and spyware, and I decided that since i didn't have much important data on it that I would just do a completely fresh install of XP. I can't get my comp to get past the initial setup for XP (i created a streamlined verison with SP2, since,my XP pro version was very old). It will format my drive, and copy the initial setup files, but when it restarts it just reboots the cd and asks me if I want to install windows XP, and proceeds to format and setup files again. After about 6 tries im getting desperate and any help would be useful. I have read a number of XP reinstall guides, but i can't find any info pertaining to my specific problem.
