I wanted to protect my documents on my laptop with a password, and I used ''the easy way'' of protecting it from within my XP user account (I used the built in documents password protection, found in the account mangement menu in the control panel). everything was fine until I've restarted the computer. I got (and still getting) the following message: ''The system could not log you on.

I am fairly comfortable with my XP home set up. Iwas looking at a Dell desktop that offers XP Pro loaded and a CD of Vista Business free. Would I be able to use Pro as I do Home and ignore the bells and whistles advantages? I may want to install Vista eventually and this seemed like a cheap way to test! I have seen some reviews of Pro and it does not seem too different.
I'm using XP Home edition and have set up user profiles with passwords. They at one point they were able to log onto the Internet from their accounts. Now they are unable to access anything other than their own documents. Any ideas what happened and how to fix this? The virus software is up to date and the scanner runs clean, although the sytem overall seems slower.

I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.
Subsequent to doing a repair on my WinXP-SP2, I started getting this error message whenever Windows Media Player is open and I copy a file from my hard drive to a jump drive: "A null reference pointer was passed to the stub". Have never seen this message in 25 years of computing. What does it mean/why does it appear?
I have got the following error on XP under a video editing app. The app is VirtualDubMod. I never got this error before. The error is below. The instruction "0x025397a8" referenced memory at "0x01bc39f0". The memory could not be read. What exactly does that mean? How do I fix it? Is it possible to fix it?
I just got an old laptop from a friend of mine running XP Professional. There are currently two passwords required to be able to use the computer: one is right after starting up the computer, before anything's really booted up yet. The other appears after the system screen -- I have to press ctrl+alt+delete, then put in a user name and password. Is there any way to get rid of the first (admin? Is that the term?) password without getting rid of the second one?
Just updated windows and after restarting I was suprised to see the user selection window at the booting of windows as i am the only user on this computer.I want windows to start automatically without letting me choose the user, don't have any use for that window.

I have two computers & so I don't frequently use the one I am having the problem with. It is a Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Running Windows XP Home/newbie so pls be patient..Anyway, the Dell got infected with the NSIS Media Trojan & I tried everything to remove it including but not limited to Webroot spy sweeper. It would quarantine it but apparently this thing regenerates in the registry. Therefore, I decided I needed to really secure my system & so since I am the only user, I deleted the non-admin logon account & set up the admin account with a password. I wrote it down but have lost the paper which I had written the password on. The hint is not helping me remember it exactly so I'm locked out.
I have Windows XP home edition and on one of the 4 user settings I get the message the WinCtlAd.exe failed to execute. I also get WinCtlAdAlt.exe failed. In the task manager they seem to be trying to run repeatedly using 100% of the cpu. What are these files? Are they part of Windows or are the something malicious that I can delete? I have the urge to delete them but I hesitant to do so until I get some expert advice.

Whenever I try to get into the User Accounts section of my Windows XP, I get the following error:"Can't move focus to the control because it is invisible, not enabled, or of a type that does not accept the focus"I have absolutely no idea what it means, or how to go about fixing it. The account is Administrator, and I have used WindowBlinds with it in the past. I don't even know if WindowBlinds has anything to do with the problem, but it didn't start until around the point that I was using it. But it is uninstalled now, and I still get the error. There is another account on the computer, it is my sisters, and it can access the User Accounts section just fine... but it is not an Administrator account so it isn't much help for me.
