I have a Compaq Presario 2100, running under Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3.I have the hibernation option enabled. This has worked satisfactorily several times but now it fails to work.On preparing to hibernate my laptop locks.

Nevertheless, my Acer 1350 - when left untouched for a short time - goes (not to town) but to the logon screen.How in the world do I prevent this situation from happening? I want to keep staying in the application picture.

I do have everything set correctly and the system will go into standby or hibernation just fine if I select one of those options manually, just not automatically when I close the lid.I have tried contacting dell, but their support is horrible and got nowhere.

I've had this laptop for a couple of years now and I could make ithibernate or standby as I pleased. About 1-2 weeks ago it would nolonger do this. If I go into control panel then power options thereisn't even a hibernate tab anymore either. If I press the power button(or click on start then turn off computer) the box with standby isdimmer so that I can't click on it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently got a new laptop, a Sony Vaio PCG-K15. I bought it used from a colleague, and the hard drive in it was bad. I sent away for a new hard drive, and it came in, and now everything's up and running just fine. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and it runs great, but yesterday, the suspend/hibernate features of the laptop just disappeared. They're no longer present in Power Options, and they're no longer present in Start > Turn Off Computer. All I have is Log off, Shut down, or Restart. Can anyone shed any light on to why these options suddenly disappeared.

My friend has a toshiba laptop. In that once windows XP was reinstalled. Now it has win xp pro sp2. Anyways everything is fine but in shutdown there are only 2 options - turn off and restart. View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the last week or so, i've been unable to hibernate my computer.When i click the button to hibernate, the screen will go blue and say "Preparing to hibernate" as normal, but then it quickly flashes back to whatever i had before on the screen.
Strangely, i can still standby or shutdown the computer with no problem. And im not getting any error messages or anything about it.It just won't hibernate.So far, i've tried System restore to bring it back to an earlier date. But that didn't work.I tried restore it to another earlier date, and that failed (it wouldn't restore it. probably because there weren't any changes to be made. i don't know.)I also tried un-installing my virus software (McAfee) and then re-installing as i thought that may be the problem, but it didn't solve it.I also tried opening "Power Options" in the control panel. From there i unchecked "Enable hibernate" and restarted the computer. I then checked "Enable hibernate" and restarted again.
I've changed the settings under power management so when i press the power button or close the lid the laptop should hibernate. When i do either of these the screen just stays on preparing to hibernate.really annoying cos i have then have to restart my laptop.

Managed to also delete WordPad and when I start up - a message box labeled "Windows Installer" appears with the note - "Preparing to Install." Notice goes away and I do whatever I need to do online. However I need to reinstall a printer and am getting the message that the installer is missing. How do I fix that.

When booting normally, the Preparing Network connections screen stays up for over a minute, before moving on to Applying computer settings. I have plugged it directly into the same segment as the domain controllers, etc. If I use MSConfig, and boot minimally, it comes up as expected, but of course without network functioning.

Immediately after Windows starts up a window pops up titled: Windows Installer - Preparing to install. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Lap top with Windows 2000 Pro on it. When booting up, the computer will go through all its normal start-up procedures. When it comes time for the Username/Password, I put them in, I hear the wave sound for windows loading, and then it freezes! The hour glass cursor remains on the screen and moves, only NOTHING happens from there on.
However,I can get it to boot normally after this by shutting it down.... then going into the Bios Set-up screen.....Change NOTHING & simply exit out of the Bios Set-up......THEN it will start normally and bring up the Desktop! BUT....if I shut it down again, It will freeze right after the Log-in just like before. Im tired of always having to go into the Bios to get this darn thing to work
I'm having problems with computer freezing when I multi task. Hitting the ctrl alt delete will bring it back. I have a compaq 64 bit with 512 mb. This only seems to happen when I'm using internet explorer.Could it be a bad ethernet causing lockups?

Also tried to reinstall the LPT1 port and the drivers several times without no success. Even checked so that there's no other software that interferes with the printer drivers. and did run a virus check, both in Win and in pure DOS-mode, nothing. Starting to suspect that the LPTport on my Mobo- ASUS P4P800E Deluxe is screwed.The setting in BIOS is set to ECP as default and can't be manipulated.

I try to move the mouse and nothing. I try to hit CTRL ALT Delete and still nothing. The only way to get it unfrozen is to do a cold boot. I have tried to pinpoint the problem to one program or another, but it will even lock up at the Windows Login screen when I first boot. I did a thorough get of the hard drive and it finds no bad sectors. Any clue as to what might be causing this? Also I tried installing windows 98. I can install most of windows 98, but the computer locks up when trying to load 98. Not sure where to go from here.

In effect I.E. 6 is no longer usable.If I allow it to contact MS there is NEVER a solution!There are no viruses or browser hijackers on this PC and I run Spybot and Ad-Aware weekly.I.E. 6 is useless at this time.
