Whenever I hibernate my PC, it dumps memory to disk but then it restarts instead of powering down. But when I choose shutdown, it properly powers down.I have tried everything i know and searched a lot of web sites but i am still not able to solve this problem. Then I came across techsupportalert which recommended your web site. So I hope that you will be able to solve this problem.

I've had this laptop for a couple of years now and I could make ithibernate or standby as I pleased. About 1-2 weeks ago it would nolonger do this. If I go into control panel then power options thereisn't even a hibernate tab anymore either. If I press the power button(or click on start then turn off computer) the box with standby isdimmer so that I can't click on it.

I have unchecked hibernation, I have ensured that standby is not the option in power management, I have cursed and shouted. Nevertheless, my Acer 1350 - when left untouched for a short time - goes (not to town) but to the logon screen. How in the world do I prevent this situation from happening? I want to keep staying in the application picture.

I recently got a new laptop, a Sony Vaio PCG-K15. I bought it used from a colleague, and the hard drive in it was bad. I sent away for a new hard drive, and it came in, and now everything's up and running just fine. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and it runs great, but yesterday, the suspend/hibernate features of the laptop just disappeared. They're no longer present in Power Options, and they're no longer present in Start > Turn Off Computer. All I have is Log off, Shut down, or Restart. Can anyone shed any light on to why these options suddenly disappeared.

In the last week or so, i've been unable to hibernate my computer. When i click the button to hibernate, the screen will go blue and say "Preparing to hibernate" as normal, but then it quickly flashes back to whatever i had before on the screen.
Strangely, i can still standby or shutdown the computer with no problem. And im not getting any error messages or anything about it.It just won't hibernate. So far, i've tried System restore to bring it back to an earlier date. But that didn't work.I tried restore it to another earlier date, and that failed (it wouldn't restore it. probably because there weren't any changes to be made. i don't know.)I also tried un-installing my virus software (McAfee) and then re-installing as i thought that may be the problem, but it didn't solve it.I also tried opening "Power Options" in the control panel. From there i unchecked "Enable hibernate" and restarted the computer. I then checked "Enable hibernate" and restarted again.

I want to my WinXP laptop (a Thinkpad T41, WinXP SP2) to execute a task/script/job when it receives a suspend/hibernate request from me before it completes said suspend hibernate. It's basically a "do this before you suspend" procedure Specifically, I want to shut off my jabber connection to a server without having to do this manually.

I am facing the disgusting "windows frequently restarts" problem. I am using Compaq Presario X1028US laptop with Intel Pentium Centrino 1.5 GHZ processor, 512 MB RAM and a 160 GB hard disk with Windows XP SP 3 as the OS. I regularly update the anti virus (AVG) and the Windows automatically. The most recent change to the system was to upgrade AVG from 8.5 to 9.0 which was done yesterday. Everything was fine until today morning when the laptop started restarting by itself. I first ignored it and continued to work and it became more and more frequent. I have referred several posts on the internet and have done all the things mentioned below in order but the problem still persists. I am not able to pin point to the cause of the problem. It should be noted that the problem exists only in the normal mode of Windows XP and not in the Safe mode.

Every time i turn on the computer, it restarts by itself before i can log on. then it will just endlessly restart itself until i shut it off. occasionally i can hold esc and it will log on properly, but it takes a really long time and doesnt always work. I am using a Windows XP laptop, and i did a virus scan and deleted all the dangerous files. I even unchecked "automatically restart" for a system failure and nothing happened.

I have a Toshiba Satellite (it's about 2yrs old). Yesterday I did a interlnet explorer update and when my system did a restart to install the screen went black. I powered off then on and it would goto the xp loading page then go black again. Tried to restart several times sometime I could get to the login page and once I logged in my desktop would appear but I could not do anything. Tried f8 went to last known good configuration but still same issue. Tried safe mode but you can not do a restore in safe mode. Several times when i was able to get logged in a blue screen would flash but very fast and it would say something about an error and needing to restart.

Right, got a Toshiba A30-151, had XP Home OEM installed on it when it left the factory (so no install disk), finally got round to doing a reinstall (been messing about with OSX, needed clearing off and starting from scratch anyway). Some time ago a copy of XP Pro (fully legal) was posted through my door addressed to someone else, with no return address, so i kept it. anyway, thought i'd finallly use this and installed it, but now i have no option to hibernate the laptop? The hibernate tab is not there in power management. I know it's supported, as i could hibernate it before i reformatted and reinstalled. any way round this, other than using my mate's Home OEM disk and my serial to reinstall?

Compatibility Mode is most commonly used for applications that may have peformed better on another Operating System such as Windows 95, 98, ME, etc.Should you install Windows XP and experience a negative impact on a particular application you can try to run it in Compatibility Mode. To do so: 1. Right click the Executable file and choose Properties.2. Select the "Compatibility" tab.3. Place a check mark in "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for:"4. Select the Operating System you would like to run the application in from the drop down list.5.

When I go to websites, for example www.victoriassecret.com and try to click on an item and then click on "larger view, back view, side view, etc" tabs I get "javascript void" and my PC cannot bring the link up for me to get a good look at what I would be buying.I have Windows XP. I turned off any pop up blockers. My IE is 6.0 and my java is version 5.1.3810, both very updated. When I went to a website recommended on another thread with a similar problem I see my browser is not Javascript enabled but is Java Applet enabled. The link I tested it out on is...http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm

How do you enable image pictures to display on the left-hand side of Favorites links instead of the blue "e" image that represents Internet Explorer? When I go to Favorites sometimes I have little images display at the beginning of the link title name. Maybe they are bitmap images that obviously came from the various linked websites. Sometimes I have them and sometimes they don't display. I believe whenever I cleanup my PC (removing Temp files, Cookies, Defraq, etc.) they go away for a while. Then all of a sudden I find that many of the images are displayed. Some never have images...I assume because an image if not available from the linked website.Same thing happens with the Google Toolbar dropdown boxes (for CNN, Google News, FOX News, MSNBC, etc.). Right now my Google News dropdown box (on my Google Toolbar) displays images of the current news articles, however the other dropdown boxes for CNN, etc. are missing the images (no red "X", just no images where they are supposed to be).

Thinkpad T41, XP Pro Powermanagement is set to hibernate when I close the lid - Works great Used to open the lid, press the little power button and it would resume from hibernate just great. Lately it won't resume from hibernate. When I press the pwoer button the disk shows no activity and it just sits with a black screen. Typing keys or moving the mouse has no impact. However, wacking the computer seems to wake it up and then everything proceeds as normal. I would rather not have to wack it.
