HJT / Blank Window Pops Up But Disappears In The Taskbar
May 5, 2005
I've been having this issue where while I'm surfing the internet using Firefox, a blank window pops up and then disappears in the taskbar on the bottom. It's too quick to grab and find. I checked my running processes, nothing out of the ordinary. I ran a full blown virus scan with Norton AV Corporate, with all updates. I have ran Adware. with newest updates smart and full scan, PestPatrol (with newest updates), Aluria. And none of these has found anything. I even went into IE and Firefox and double-checked my plugins to make sure there are no strange plug ins which may have been spawning a process, and there is nothing out of the ordinary.
I've just switched from 98 to XP. I find now that the window designations in the taskbar for my *browser windows only* are severely and unaccountably truncated. My browser is IE6. Even if there's only one window open, if it's a browser window, only one letter will display. Other windows will properly display the full name. I've turned taskbar grouping on and off with no change. I've also run the SFC utility, with no change. There is no such problem in my Win98 machine, and my security settings (and all other settings) are the same. I don't wish to upgrade to IE7.
Loaded some Kodak software and the icon is showing in my task bar. Would like to remove it (I can manually close everytime I start up but its a pain). Also Everytime I add my Creative Soundblaster icon to the taskbar (to control my speaker volume) it disappears on re-booting (the regular microsoft speaker control also does not stay
I have no idea what is going on. I Have windows xp on my computer and now every time I open anything outlook, internet explorer, programs start menu etc this windows installer box pops up and says "preparing to install".
When Windows is starting up I get a mostly blank dialog box with an OK button at the bottom after the Windows splash screen disappears, on top of the Windows is starting up screen. The dialog box that contains a small piece of unrecognizable text in the top left corner that changes each time I start computer. Most of the icons on the desktop have changed to the generic I don't know what you are icon and no applications will run including Internet Explorer except the virus program . I get an error message that Windows needs to know what application created that file. (This includes cmd.exe)
The dialog box cannot be closed with the ( X ) in the corner and will only continue to start windows after sitting for about 10 minutes or clicking the OK button. I don't believe it's a virus as the virus program does load and did do a complete scan without finding a virus.
whenever I typed the letter T windows explorer would pop up, F the search Function would pop up, and b my computer would beep. I did not do anything to windows that I can remember that would account For this problem and I have not installed any new programs since Sept 3
I turned on my comp to find a blank desktop. The wallpaper appears but there is no taskbar and no desktop icons. This is the same for each user on the system. I was able to start the task manager and run a command prompt from there which allowed me to run some programs but not windows explorer. My system restore also seems to have been turned off and all restore points removed.
I managed to run a virus check with AVG free edition which detected an executable file 'charlie.exe' in the my pictures folder for two of the users saying they were trojans 'trojan horse backdoor.generic8.fjs'. AVG deleted these but, as I suspected, did not cure the problem. I have also run adaware but this never detected anything other than a handful of tracking cookies. I have downloaded Hijack this V2.0.0, but will wait for advice before posting a log.
Is it possible to put run command-line window on my taskbar?? I know how to put shortcut on taskbar and also know that winkey+R opens it. but i want the exact run window in which i can directly type something (like the way address bar is integrated in taskbar). any help would be good. thanks in advance.
I have XP, home edition. Finally installed the dreaded SP3, and have lost a little address window that I used to have on my taskbar. Can't remember how I added this in the first place, and really miss it.
Sometimes I have multiple folders open and need to switch quickly.Usuallly they are minimized in my taskbar. Unfortunately most are on the same disk and even have the same path.Due to the full pathname, what is shown in the taskbar is only the first part of the path. I would rather have the last part of ech path shown. Is this possible for improved identification
I just recently installed some new hardware on my computer, almost everything, new motherboard, CPU, memory and GPU. After the upgrade, when I click on a program on the taskbar, the window for that program does not come up on top of my current window, however the taskbar icon blinks orange. I have to close/minimize my current window to see the new one.
Since installing IE7 the open windows on the taskbar show the url instead of the website name. For example instead of showing 'Yahoo' it says http://yahoo.com. Is there a way to change this?
When I open System Restore all I get is a blank window. Nothing. Just white. How can I get my system to restore System Restore without completely re-installing Windows XP?
I am new to this website. I am intersted to see what kind of valuable feedback I can get for my current computer issue. I have 2 users set up on my Laptop PC. On my desktop, all programs function fine. On the other desktop for the other user, when a program is launched, it opens up as a blank program window. IE opens fine, but other programs such as McAfee and other certain Microsoft Office programs will open but not fully execute.
I want to know if there is a way to bring to front all windows in a taskbar group with one click (or a couple). For example I often use four notepad instances which are grouped in the taskbar. I have to bring them to front and focus by clicking each instance individually. I was hoping there was a "restore" option when I right click on the group in the taskbar but there isnt one. Is there a way to bring them all to the front without cascading or tiling? (i.e. bring them to the front without changing their previously assigned position on the desktop)

There are no icons or taskbar on my desktop, On any account that I log in on. Cannot access task manager or start menu. How do I recover my desktop? This is a dell desktop pc, windows xp
With XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt - Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.
name of pc is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if u have xs permissions. Logon failure : the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer
I cannot view in full screen anymore.I created a website that lets a user enter their name and social # and then choose a test in 1 of 3 languages. Once you choose a language, a new browser window opens and the test/information is displayed in this new window.
After a few days of work, the user cannot open new windows explorer or other application windows. Nothing happens if she tries to. If she closes one window, then she's able to open a new one. The "allowed" number of opened windows varies from time to time, sometimes being as low as 4, but sometimes around 10 to 12. The performance tab in the task manager is completely blank (see screenshot). Some Windows explorer menu bars sometimes are blank, and a windows logo appear instead of the menus (see screenshots). Rebooting fixes the problem, but it comes back a few days later. The laptop is part of a domain, running generally the same applications as other desktops and laptops in the domain, running the same antivirus, etc. The virus definitions are up to date, and a full scan has been run. Even stranger is the fact that when it happens, Windows XP doesn't even seem to be unstable, nor does it crash in any way. Just seems as if there was a limit on the number of processes or handles or threads allowed to run.
Laptop: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad (model 63716NF) CPU: Core 2 @ 1,8Ghz RAM: 2 gb OS: Windows XP sp3. Swap file: initially set to 2046 mb and max is set at 4092 mb Processor scheduling and Memory usage are both set to "Programs"
I have been searching the web for solutions but cannot find any forum post describing the same problem. Thank you for any help.

When i open any link with "open in new window" the new window is not full size screen window.Of course i dragged it by mouse many times and that should fix it later. It means it should be opened as it had been dragged, but that's never happened though i dragged it about a hundred time as a full screen size. What is the wrong here?
I just replaced my old Windows 2000 HD with a newly purchased HD and installed Windows XP Pro/SP2 with all the latest updates from MS.When opened this web page by placing cursor on the line and click, the Google page appears briefly on the myWin.doc window but immediately closes and opens a new, different size window for the Google web page. In the old Windows 2000, the Google page remains opened on the same window overlapping the myWin.doc window and no new window is opened.
tried to back up("burn" ) some files onto a cd but it is not recognizing when I put a blank cd in the drive. Also, in properties it shows that the drive is full...this is with the blank cd!
