HD Boot Up Error - Can't Boot Cd

Nov 29, 2006

Home Brew Computer .. Windows XP SP2 (with all the updates .. except IE7) Ive installed a new ATA 250 gig Seagate Cloned a good OS .. Making the C: partition 50 gig. The second Data Partition is recognized as the remaining 184 gig and the Drive seems to be working great. Every boot up .. Windows says the software for the HD is not found and the ST3250824A may not work properly .. etc .. etc. Once past these messages .. all seems OK.

. With one exception. When trying to make an Acroins backup of the C: Partition to an external HD . It has many reports of Sectors being used or faulty .. and can not continue. If I use the Acronis Boot CD .. Acronis is AOK If I run Sea tools .. It results in a blacked out (result screen) upon completion. Windows Check and Fix disc seems OK. The device manager reports the Monitor with a yellow .. but the VIAS3G UniChrome Pro IGP device is working properly. Right now .. Im not using the owners Monitor..

The Raid Controller PCI bus 0, device 15 says the Drivers are not installed (code 28) But Im not using the Raid Mobo SATA connections (ATA drives only) This drive was Cloned from an 80 gig that was freshly restored from the Windows CD. When this 80 gig is re-installed it does not have the boot up error .. and Acronis runs internally OK. The device manger still has the same two yellow Questions which are understandable .. IMO. A new ATA Seagate 320gig is on order for an external enclosure application.

Setup Duel Boot Configuration - Slow Boot Up - Occurred Error Operating System

Oct 27, 2007

I"m running WinXP SP2 Home. Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.

My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.

What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....

Computer Wont Boot - Boot Manager Error?

I had had 2 operating system on 2 hard drives (XP and Vista) I took vista off and replaced it with media center. I could boot both xp and media center but the vista boot screen always shows up and would have to go into "ealier versions of windows" and choose my OS from there. I read somewhere to get rid of the vista boot screen I should delete "bootmgr" file and "boot" folder from the root of C: I did this and now nothing works. It tries to boot into vista boot screen but it says files are missing and resets

Installation Unusually Slow - Boot Error First Boot

Mar 30, 2010

I am having probllems installing Windows XP, first of all the installation is unusually slow, it has more than 5 hours installing. Then i have a boot error from Windows NOT from the BIOS, i have tried getting into the Repair Console an using FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, unsuccesfully; removed every suspecious setting on my BIOS..... The installator copies small parts, copy 1% or 2% and stops for a while (I think it is decompressing the files, but that slow!?). After that i get a booting error (I dont remember what does it says; i will post it later, when my 4th attemp ends).

Won't Boot (error On Boot) / Can't See SATA Drive

Mar 31, 2010

I had voltage fluctuations last night due a snowstorm and the voltage dropped crashing my PC.It now won't boot and gives the error that a file is corrupted.Windows/system32/config..The PC runs an OEM XP home edition on a SATA drive, the PC also has an IDE drive (D) but the OSes are on the C drive.Inside the XP installation I have Linux Mint installed. When I boot I get the 2 options I always used to , XP (default) and Linux Mint.XP won't boot when selected and gives the error above. The Linux Mint, also on C and in fact installed as a program within XP, will boot, hence I believe the SATA drive to be undamaged.I can see the C drive and all the XP files from the Linux installation.I've tried using the original full CD and the recovery console but when the recovery console opens all it can see is the IDE drive which it labels D (and of course doesn't contain the original XP install.I can't remember how I got XP on the SATA drive in the first place, I don't appear to have any Hard drive drivers in the case I keep all software CDs in and I'm a bit flummoxed. I can only imagine I just fitted it and loaded the XP install disc but that's at odds with what seems to be happening now.Spent a large part of today Googling but can't find anything that will fix this. so far.I don't want to have to wipe and re-install everything unless there's no option, it's a fast way to kill a couple of days over the holidays.

Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device / Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device

Dec 17, 2007

I haven't installed anything new on my computer but today after having my computer shipped to me via UPS I cut on my computer and where the XP load bar screen was I got: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".Seeing this I knew I went into the BIOS setup and tried to turn the system priority to look at the HDD. Instead I only had the option of the DVD drive and the CD drive.I have no idea how to solve this problem and don't have any of the recovery CD's. I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT because like a bad little boy I did not backup my 4 years worth of work.

Boot From CD Error

Aug 30, 2005

I just upgraded my computer with a new mobo and vid card . I have WinXP BTW. Everthing was working fine until last night. I recorded a performance into Sound Forge and was about to save it when the computer shut down. It automatically tried to reboot but gave me an error like "Boot From CD. Insert disk and press enter". (btw, both of my harddrives were recognized) Well, I had no disk so I just pressed enter. It then proceeded to do a scan disk check. The message I received was "Your computer has just recovered from a serious error" . It suggested I send a report to Microsoft. I however have no internet connection at home. The details of the error included to file addresses. One was something like C:\Documents and Settingsminidump.......

I tried turning the PC on this morning and it turned on fine. The only thing I noticed was a mechanical sound like when the floppy drive is searching for a disk and there is none present. What could possibly be wrong?

Boot Checkdisk Error?

Jan 13, 2005

He turned on his computer today and it just froze at the windows loading screen. When my father came home from work he tried to boot it into safe mode to try and do a rollback to a safe point, but instead it would give him a screen with some lines on it which will follow in a moment. He then tried to run chkdsk in safe mode but it just hung there so he restarted it and it went straight into safe mode with no indication it was running chkdsk except the HD light is going so perhaps it is in the background. Either way we went ahead with the Windows Xp disk to try and do a repair and ran a chkdisk from there and it finished said it found 1 or more errors then went into safe mode again with the hd light running. He is unable to do anything at all in safe mode atm but is letting it sit there jic the hd is doing chkdisk again.

How To Recover Deleted Grub / Boot Partition (Dual Boot System)

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. How To Replace Master Boot Record On Dual Boot System & Delete Linux Drive

Mar 8, 2006

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

Boot Sequence Hangs At Logo Boot Screen With Progress Bar

Oct 26, 2007

On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.

I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.

Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.

Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

No Boot Loader/ Can't Select OS To Boot, Hangs On Blinking Underscore?

Sep 9, 2009

i have ONE hard drive with partitions. I had a really bad setup first, I had 1 partition with 3 windows installs on it, folders like WINDOWS, WINPRO, WINN, I never took the time to delete them or whatever, and I was using winpro as my main OS. When I was running the above setup, when I boot up it would ask me: Select what OS to load Windows Pro, Windows Home, Windows Home

I decieded to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, worked flawlessy, but I wanted to go back to windows xp pro 64 bit. So I made a new partition and installed windows XP pro 64 bit onto it. when I tried installing windows xp with my CD, the first part would work fine, but then when it restarted to continue the setup, it would load my MOBO logo and then after, it would just show a blinking underscore "_" on the top left corner, and nothing else.

I managed to install a fresh windows xp from my USB flash drive, but when booting up normally it still does not let me select what OS to log on to, it just shows the blinking underscore in the top left after the MOBO logo passes, I actually have to boot by USB drive to boot this fresh install of windows. I think something is wrong with my boot loader, but have no idea how to fix it.

Laptop Won't Boot / Can't Change Boot Order / Cd Drive Just Clicks

Nov 5, 2007

I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there. When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.

I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning. There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
