Explorer.exe And System Restore
Feb 1, 2008for a while now i've been getting something called windows file protection (i can't check what it said since my computer isn't working right) to fix this i normally done a system restore and it vanished for about a month, but last night i got it again and had no time to system restore.now that i'm back on the computer my shortcuts and taskbar has gone, only my background remains.so could anyone help me fix this problem? or maybe even tell me how to boot system restore in task manager.

Sep 9, 2006I made a mistake on installing a piece of software that ruined everything on my computer, when I turn it on and log into my account, explorer doesn't load. I'm using Windows XP Pro. I can launch every program with CTRL+ALT+DELETE except explorer.I was told my somebody else that I should boot into safemode and there should be an option somewhere along these lines: "Would you like to start System Restore or go into Explorer?"When I booted into safemode, I didn't see those. Also, I tried the "Last Known Good Config" option and it still wouldn't load. Edit: Whoops, I spelt explorer wrong in the title, sorry.

Jun 30, 2006XP started behaving strangely-nothing in Explorer would work. I tried to do a system restore but the computer crashed whilst trying to do this. I had to reset the computer and after log-in there were no icons and you couldn't open anything. Decided to do a repair install using original XP CD. This was okay until it got to 'installing devices' (about 35 mins left), it started asking for files such as 'sunbelt counterspy.msi' (which I don't even want it to install) and won't complete the installation as I can't locate the files it wants

Feb 3, 2005I posted earlier about windows explorer shutting down and I was advised to do a system restore. SO I did.. well when it rebooted, it came up blank for a long time then my programs came up..except nothing is working. I can't even get system restore to work again. I can get AOL to come up and internet explorer but when I click on a link. nothing happens. I don't want to lose my whole system. I am using windows XP home edition.

Mar 2, 2009I did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.

Aug 9, 2005I will be installing a software which will take lot of space and resource. At some point in time, say after 6 months, I will want to do a system restore. But from the Microsoft documentation, looks like I cannot create a system restore point, which will remain permanently. It gets automatically deleted after some time. Can I copy the system restore file generated, and save it at a different place, and then use this file to system restore whenever I want to - say after 6 months or a year? If I can, then what are the files I need to copy?

It had an old xp installed on it which ino longer wish to use, but when i hook it up to the pc the drive doesn't show up, i mounted the drive on a linux(ubuntu) system and managed to delete everything except the windows folder, i believe the ntfs file system is stopping it from being deleted, my question is how can i delete the windows folder so that i can format and reuse the drive without putting it into the pc, any further info needed will be duly supplied

Mar 10, 2005Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. Sep 15, 2006I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

Nov 4, 2006My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago

My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.
