Copy System Restore File And Save At A Different Place?
Aug 9, 2005
I will be installing a software which will take lot of space and resource. At some point in time, say after 6 months, I will want to do a system restore. But from the Microsoft documentation, looks like I cannot create a system restore point, which will remain permanently. It gets automatically deleted after some time. Can I copy the system restore file generated, and save it at a different place, and then use this file to system restore whenever I want to - say after 6 months or a year? If I can, then what are the files I need to copy?

I am a 'Novice' to Backups, but am trying to learn.Where is the best place to save Backup files? I am running XP Prof. and carefully ran the Backup utility. I noticed the different options on places to save the files. I noticed I can save it to the 'D' drive (external disc), or my 'C' drive (hard drive). What happens if I save it to my 'C' drive, and my pc crashes. How do I retreive my Backup files, if I cannot turn on my pc? Is it best to save them on disc?

I am trying to do a system restore and my system runs it all but when all is done I get a message saying that no changes have been made to my system and that the system restore was unsuccessful. The reason I am trying to restore my system is because Photoshop is suddenly unable to save as a jpeg? It doesn't recognise the jpeg format when saving and saves as a Photoshop document. THen it wont recognise the file to open it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. Funnily enough photoshop elements has no problem with it.

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

I made a small document late last night and saved it to my desktop to print off today. I switched the PC on today to find that the document had gone. I thought it a little odd, but thought I could have deleted by accident. This afternoon, Avira anti virus updated itself, and the pop up balloon said that 17 files had been uploaded. I switched the PC off and switched back on this tea time, and Avira updated itself again saying that it had uploaded 17 files again. the pc would go through the 'save' process.
I have just switched off system restore, and run Avira in safe mode, along with IOBit 360 and SuperAntiSpyware - Apart from 6 cookies stored, all was clear.I then rebooted to find no improvement, so I did a system restore going back a few weeks to be on the safe side. When the PC came back on, there was no evidence that a system restore had even taken place! (also all previous restore points were still there when they should have been erased)

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:
http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed,

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.
Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

Hello everyone,
Before this, I've never had a computer problem that I could not solve. This, it seems, is out of my league. I'll appreciate any help I get on this issue..
First of all, let me tell you how this problem started..
I had Windows XP, but wanted to switch to Vista. I've already had Windows Vista come with the computer, but had formatted the hard-drive and installed Windows XP so that my computer would work faster. A few days earlier, I decided to give Windows Vista another shot. I formatted my computer, and installed Vista.
After installing Vista, I could not boot up the computer. I was getting a weird error when when attempting to boot. I thought I might've done something wrong when installing it, so I formatted again, and re-installed Vista. Still, I got the same error. I decided to go back to Windows XP..
Installing Windows XP was not a problem, but..now it seems that any time I try to save a file (any kind of file), be it a small text file created in Notepad or downloading something from the internet.. my computer automatically restarts itself. I had re-installed the Windows XP again because I thought I might've done something to it. At first, I could save files. I installed the video card driver, and the audio driver with no problems.
Than after a while and installing some other software (Windows Live Messenger and Pokerstars), I started to get the same problem.
I don't know how to fix this, please help..
I've looked around the forums, and unchecked the Automatically Restart box when encountering an error. But it hasn't fixed the problem..

I have a problem with understanding the differences between these words (actions), when I use Retrospect,( a backup program,) I cannot read any files since the backup file turns into a huge something. When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files.
When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.

I downloaded microsoft frontpage extensions resource zip file and accidentally sent the extracted files to desktop. (119 files) I did not save the file at download but just ran the zip file and the extracted files opened in desktop. I deleted the files from my desktop and recycle bin. Every time I start/reboot, these 119 files continue to open, cluttering my desktop. I need the formula/pathway to follow to get to the destination in regedit.exe hkey_current_user start up folder with instructions on how to delete these extracted files so they will stop opening to my desktop at start.

Where are these folders in XP? I have done a search for them and have found a few different ones but just arent sure which are what. Where should I look, or where can I find them?

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

I reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd.
2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after).
3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.
I have 2 DVD drives and tried both with the same result. I tried a differant Windows XP disk with the same results.
The motherboard has a backup facility which i had backed up previously with XP but not fully and can restore to that point but i want a complete reinstall.
I have formatted and installed windows XP with that disc loads of times without any problems before.
what should i do?
