for a while now i've been getting something called windows file protection (i can't check what it said since my computer isn't working right) to fix this i normally done a system restore and it vanished for about a month, but last night i got it again and had no time to system restore.now that i'm back on the computer my shortcuts and taskbar has gone, only my background remains.so could anyone help me fix this problem? or maybe even tell me how to boot system restore in task manager.
I made a mistake on installing a piece of software that ruined everything on my computer, when I turn it on and log into my account, explorer doesn't load. I'm using Windows XP Pro. I can launch every program with CTRL+ALT+DELETE except explorer.I was told my somebody else that I should boot into safemode and there should be an option somewhere along these lines: "Would you like to start System Restore or go into Explorer?"When I booted into safemode, I didn't see those. Also, I tried the "Last Known Good Config" option and it still wouldn't load. Edit: Whoops, I spelt explorer wrong in the title, sorry.
XP started behaving strangely-nothing in Explorer would work. I tried to do a system restore but the computer crashed whilst trying to do this. I had to reset the computer and after log-in there were no icons and you couldn't open anything. Decided to do a repair install using original XP CD. This was okay until it got to 'installing devices' (about 35 mins left), it started asking for files such as 'sunbelt counterspy.msi' (which I don't even want it to install) and won't complete the installation as I can't locate the files it wants
I posted earlier about windows explorer shutting down and I was advised to do a system restore. SO I did.. well when it rebooted, it came up blank for a long time then my programs came up..except nothing is working. I can't even get system restore to work again. I can get AOL to come up and internet explorer but when I click on a link. nothing happens. I don't want to lose my whole system. I am using windows XP home edition.
I did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.
I couldn't install sp2, because of a problem I don't know... so it indicated that I had to download it again, but I could only download it by erasing it. It all came wrong! I erased a file that restarted the computer and I had to restore the system. Now I have a computer that does not allow to me be in the internet, because it restarts itself while Im'm navigating.... it also appears a message of corrupt registry that had never appeared before, but if I install messenger
When starting programs IE 6.0, 'help and support' and trying to use 'user groups' and 'system restore' the applications all encounter a problem. All of the error reports refer to "ModName: mshtnl.dll". This problem first began after using system restore to go back to earlier settings. After going back to earlier setting all was okay until windows installed automatic updates and automatically reset the computer and thats when mshtml.dll errors began.ERROR: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"[I]AppName: iexplore.exe, AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180, ModName: mshtmled.dll, ModVer:6.0.2900.3059, Offset: 00061e69
If someone downloads and runs a trojan and then uses system restore to back to a system restore point prior to running the virus, is that computer still infected?Nocturnal http://www.spywaretalk.org
Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore
I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore
S/Restore system when operated comes up with "Cannot restore your system to an earlier date" Have checked for all spyware and viruses (Nil) Have tried disabling the system and also making new restore dates to no avail. Would kindly request any posssible solutions to the above also any other programme I could install to carry out the same or similiar functions to "Systems Restore
I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.
I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?
I'm trying to do a system restore without success. It goes through the motions but after it restarts always say "cannot use restore point, no changes have been made to your system". I'm trying to correct a font setting change that happened without my knowledge.
i want to restore my laptop. had restore turned on until about 3 weeks ago shut it off. question:if you shut off restore does it still keep the last restore points? and is there a way to restore in safe mode (cant boot in reg mode) if restore is shut of. when i try and turn on sys restore in safe mode it say "i cant"
My comp has been experiencing several problems and is running poorly. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
My system restore is enabled but no matter what bold restoration point I choose I am told system can't be restored to that date, choose another restoration point. I do, the system shuts down and restarts and I get the same message.
How do I do a restore to factory settings? The only thing I have been able to find is a system restore to an earlier date, could someone help me please?
I have Windows XP. I create restore points, but when i try to use the system restore, it says; Restore failed, could not resstore computer. I choose a different date and get the same thing, Can't restore. Does anyone know why this happens?
My norton anti-virus said that some files were mssing. It said that if I restored my computer to an earlier date that this should correct the problem. My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.
I have Windows XP. WHen I try to use "system restore", I keet getting a message that say that I cannot restore to the restore point I chose. I followed the instructions, and only choose restore points that are bolded.
i've been trying to do a system restore (manually, it's not like the system is doing it on his own), but in the end when it's supposed to show the message of having finished the process, it always says that the system couldn't be restored. I've tryied several restoration points, but no matter how different or how far it just won't do.
I have a Dell 2400 with Windows XP. I have used "System Restore" several times in the past with good results. The last several days I have been trying to use same and go back at least a month, but when I click on the arrow to to the left side of the restore box to go to the previous month it will not do same, nor will it go to the next month when I click on the right side arrow. I need to restore and see if it will correct a problem I am having with Links 2003
anyone else have problems getting system restore to work at all? When I try it , I get a message saying something similiar to cannot be restored and no changes have been made. This happens no matter how far back I go. Had my computer (DEll) 2 or3 yrs with windows home edition.
I have a toshiba laptop A105 sieries. I got a real nasty worm and could not get rid of it.I then stuck in the restore disc and did a complete erase of my harddrive. I am now trying to install the operating system off of the restore disc and I am not able to. Can someone please help me. I have went into the bios and set it to boot from dvd rom but then all it does is say recovering. 32 min later when it is done I try to boot from hard drive it ask me if I want to start windows normally. I select it and then nothing happens. I go back to bios and it says bood from hard drive but no go. If I go back into bios and have it boot from the recover disc it's the same thing all over. I don't know what I am doing and am a little confused no, really confused.
It's clear that System Restore does not simply put down a given Registry of a Restore Point instead of one in existence. Before this System Restore examines for compatibility the coming Registry and established programmed. Sometimes System Restore adjusts them, makes some corrections and informs user about this. But in a complicate situation System Restore cannot make corrections and refuses to put Restore Point down.Where can I read about:
1) What does System Restore control specifically?
2) In which situation specifically does System Restore refuse to put Restore Point down?
3) Is it possible to exclude these testings from System Restore?
My system restore is no longer creating any restore points, I have to do it manually. About 3 weeks ago I had a virus that I believe I got rid of using HiJackThis. That virus shut off my system restore so that it could not be used and at that time I lost all my restore points. Now my computer seems fine except for the system is not creating any NEW restore points.
