The drive will read and permit opening of normal CD ROM's, itwill also allow DVD films to be run, however when trying to open DVD media other tham films then the drive tries to open tbut then eventually just gives up for no apparent reason. There was one point when it started to work, but only briefly and that was when I checked for new updates on the RADEON Video 7200 card, I downloaded the updates then tried to open the DVD, this worked before re-booting, but when I re-booted the DVD-ROM refused to work again.

One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file. There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server. What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior. Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department. Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?
I checked my Recycle Bin for another reason and was startled to find that I had 195 BAK files in that bin that had not been there the day before. In fact I've never had BAK files appear in my Recycle Bin before. What happened and is it safe to delete them
My laptop has recently stopped running .exe files. Now whenever I try to run a .exe file, windows prompts me what program do I want to open it with.Does anyone know what's going on here?
I have a problem with video codecs all of a sudden, both my media players (Windows media player and BS Player) have stopped playing the audio tracks of my video files earlier on today, everything was working fine, and my video files were playing perfectly. I have the Xvid and Divx codecs installed. When I try and play a video file (that I watched earlier on today), Windows Media Player says that it is connecting to the codec server, then says there is an error downloading codec but it shouldn't even need to do this, as I KNOW I have the correct codecs installed. The visuals play fine but no audio.
Trying to install WinXP on new hard drive. Once setup gets to copying files part I gives errors saying WinXP is not installed could not copy files imgprev.chm, insinsnt.dll, etc. i have new xp cd.

Hi, I am having a weird problem. I cannot change what programs I use by defualt to open windows files. It does not matter whether I right click on a certain file and choose open with or if I use the tools option in the folder menu. This is what happens. I want to open a .jpg file with picassa photo viewer. I right click the .jpg file and choose open with. I then click browse to locate the .exe file that will open it. Well once I click it I get sent back to the open with window and nothing has changed. The .jpg file will not open with any program that can open it and it will not add the .exe file into the window. This is a bit frustrating as I cannot change what opens certain windows files by default. This goes for any type of file I try to open with any program.
when i download a file and then try to open it. i get an error that the specified file has encountered a problem and needs to close. if i cut and past the file to a location outside the folder i can then run the program.
Sometime over the past couple of weeks, I started having a number of files on my C:/ drive which would not open. I wrote another forum and got some advice, and did some studying, and for some I was able to take back permissions and found what looked like a phony user account hidden way down in Documents and Settings.
Today I found close to 2/3 of my files would not display, of the types, htm and html, jpg, png, and doc files. I went to check permissions and the security tab was not under Properties. I have tried everything: I have re-installed Windows, I have run every virus and adware and spyware scan and repair known, and have constantly cleaned the registry and used HiJack this which did show two programs called Voodoo and Banshee which were not mine.
Tonight I tried opening a chm file and it failed, with that error message. This happens for any chm file I have tried. I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.
I have a mapped drive on the network and when I access if from the My Computer window I get the Open With window asking me what program to use. But if I right click it and choose explorer then it opens.
I just saved some files on a CD using XP's burner. Now I find that I can't open these files. they have a '.bkf' extension. I need something to open them with. How can I use this CD if I needed to restore these files at a later date?
Using windowsXPhome on a 3 year old HP. Just recently, when files are downloaded (eg. Spybot S&D), they install OK, but will not open or start. I have uninstalled & reinstalled to no avail. I am the administrator of PC. Once a notice appeared saying that I did not have permissions?
I am trying to open my files in my documents . Windows xp. Message states tht no program is associated with my files. Suggest that I go to control panel folder options and choose a program to open my files. When I looked I saw that where the file extensionsare located it showed (NONE) on a good many of the items. The programs that I have to choose from will not open my files. Notepad is only chicken scratcing. How do I solve this problem . I am kinda a rookie at this stuff but I learn quickly.
i had an older computer that quit working, couldnt get into anything,so i got a new computer and took the old hard drive out and put that into an external enclosure. Now my question is so far i have been able to open anything on the old drive i want except the file that has my name on it.When i try to open it it says access restricted,so what i was wondering was my part of that old computer was password protected could that be why it wont let me open? And is there anyway around it?
I did a system restore, because I had what might have been a spy-bot, that hijack my deck-top, and it wanted me to buy its anti-virus program, which it gave me no choice but to buy it, because it hy-jacked my deck-top. I did not buy it, but I did a system restore and then after that, the hy-jacking thing was gone, but I now cannot access my pictures, it says access denied, and some of my My Pictures folders just freeze up, when I try to open, however, they are saying "file is empty", don't know if the files are corrupted or what. They are artwork picture files of eight years of work.
Hello,I tried to upgrade my XP by adding service pack 2 but it told me that I did not have a genuine XP and that I had to download a genuine file After trying this, I found that I could not open any files on my desktop, and any files that I have downloaded to try and get rid of this problem I am unable to get to.
I have used PKZipw-v2.63 for many years. Recently, on my WinXP-Pro upon open <any>.zip it open the zip-file and after a couple of seconds it will throw a Dr.Watson error "PKZIPW has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." "AppName: pkzipw.exe AppVer: 2.60.0.3 ModName: pkwg32.dll ModVer: 3.1.0.0 Offset: 00020f10".This does not occur on my WinXP-Home computer.I do remember deleting some cookies prior to this misbehavior, but cannot remember which cookies.
I have Windows XP, home edition. For some time now I have not been able to open files with the left double click. That highlights the title in blue allowing me to change the name. I have to open the file with right click and going to open. I have no idea how this changed and I have no idea how to change it back.
I have an external HDD on which I have backed up 15G of Data. I wish to retrieve some Pictures from this Backup but when I try to open it in order to restore these pictures I cannot find a programme to open it with. I do have Windows NT but can't seem to get it to open with .bkf.
I picked up some crappy malware called ?Windows Police? last night while I was surfing for player info for my fantasy football league. I immediately ran a scan using AVG, but in my impatience and worry over getting this infection I googled for information and found instructions at this web site. So I mistakenly tried to follow them. Unfortunately I must have made an error in there somewhere because now I?m having problems opening program files. AVG scrubbed the virus but now I cannot open program files. Either the program cannot be found or I get the ?Open With? pop up menu. I?ve tried to run the WMI diagnostic but can?t get that to work either. Is this fixable?
I have a Dell C521, havind Windows XP PRO installed on it. I'm having problems downloading and opening lots of files for Paint Shop Pro 7. These are some messages I get for various reasons. 'It does not look like your system is configured to properly view this file. You can continue but the file you are trying to view may look "wrong". For version PSP 7, you need MSVCRT10.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL loaded in both Windows and Windows/Systems Directories. This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel. Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Proffesional Service Pack 2 CD now.
I have Windows XP. When I download a file (WP, pdf, etc.), and it asks me to open or save it, it will only let me save it. If I try to open it, it seems to download, but then the relevant application never opens, and I get a message that I may not have the appropriate permission. So I have to save it, then open the application myself, then open the saved file.
I can't open multiple files and folders, but my little registry hack Copy To, and Move To (info about it here: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-6115665.html) opens up instead. I tried deleting those, but then nothing happens if I try to open multiple files or folders. I don't know when this happened, because I rarely open more than one file/folder simultaneosly.
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. I had Internet Explorer 7, and for about a month I would get a "Error: Operation Aborted" every now and then and I would have to open a new window, so Friday morning I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 Beta to see if it would remove the problem. It didn't, so I tried Firefox, but I found both IE 8 and Firefox to be annoying, so I decided to remove them both and go back to IE 7, but this caused a whole different problem. I think that I might have done something wrong while removing the programs because now IE doesn't work at all. Now whenever I click on IE, the IE screen will flash for about a second and then disappear.
I just upgraded my very tired old Compaq Presario 7598 from 98SE to XP home edition, somehow I lost Word 2000. Prior to the upgrade I saved all my important docs to an external Buslink hard drive. Now when I try to view my stuff it says I need Word 2000. When I put the disk in it asks for the numbers off the jewel case, I don't have these as it came as bundled software when I originally bought the computer. Compaq is being of no help!! Someone out there help me with the numbers or tell me what to do!! I need access to my stuff!--Tks--Steve tradaba@yahoo.com stevenh@skylands.net
