I recently disabled my primary HDD in windows unintentionally. Now windows will not boot. I receive the BSOD message telling me i need to run chkdsk but i know the HDD works fine. I installed a second windows on the same hdd to boot to and it works. How can I alter the files in the windows folder of my primary install to renable the HDD so that I may boot it?
View 13 RepliesPlease can some one help me with this one I am just about to throw my laptop out of the window.I had a really bad virus on my laptop the other day and have had to re-install from the original recovery disc (laptop is HP pavillion entertainment Notebook PC - HP Pavillion dv1000 - about 3.5 years old). Luckily all of the data and emails are ok. The problem is that when I bought the laptop I also bought a legitimate XP Proffessional upgards with SP2, now when I go to install this it says that the original version on the laptop is newer than the upgrade, then another message says that the upgrade function has been disbaled. Can this be enabled again and can the upgrade be installed like before without losing any data.

but I still get access denied, and each I have to do system restore to my pc to get back to how it was
I got in touch with microsoft and this what they want me to do, but to be honest I don't trust them I don't want to mess my system up, so would you please have a look at what they have sent me.
I ran into a Trojan and finally after many attempts to remove, ended up using Microsoft's malicious software removal tool. (Free) and Norton's 2002 with updates. No slowdowns now while on the Web or local use. However It takes forever to shutdown. I went in and changed the normal shutdown time from 20000 to 5000 that seemed to solve it. The next day it slowed down again. I followed the instructions at Microsoft's website called Startup and shutdown trouble shooter. I went to msconfig and followed instructions. I found that if I disabled tfswctrl.exe, It would shut down fast. I read in a posting that the file is a HP file concerning DVD or Cd operations and isn't essential. PS I did run REG Organizer 1.4 in the automatic reg cleaner mode and it found additional problems that it repaired and some bad folders and links that were bad. That didn't solve the shut down length.
So my question is there a way to solve this dilemma, like an update? or can I just keep it from running without effecting my 2 CD/dvd units. both are HP one is Cd write and DVD read and the other is DVD/CD write both.
I opened Outlook today to find all of my contacts gone and everything new as if I just installed it. I am running a virus scan just to check my security. I did recently alter some settings from within Outlook looking for something but I don't think it would have refreshed Outlook to a new state.I'm using 2000. Is there anyway to go back to a previous state?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 256 MB stick of ram in this system. when i attempt to set my pagefile to static custom size of 800 initial 800 maximum, even in registry, i click set, and reboot the computer. when it restarts its back at the system managed size of 383. if i change to safe mode, i can set it jsut fine and it saets and stays at 800. however when i reboot after setting it into the safemode, ITS BACK AT 383! EVEN THOUGH THE CUSTOM SETTINGS ARE STILL SET, IT nags AT ME ABOUT VIRTUAL MEMORY BEING TO LOW!@!
This is really offensive to me because i can handle almsot any xp problem and this keeps bugging the crap out of me. i cant run with this crappy of a system without that pagefile being set right and i need this solution ASAP >.<

I can boot up all programs on the start page, and run them. I can access the five "last" files in Word. I can receive and send Email. I get a baloon message on startup indicating the "you have files waiting to be written to the CD. To see them now, click the baloon". Clicking the baloon freezes the computer.I can't get to the point where I could delete files or programs.

but i could only access the files from 3 out of 4 users, one of the users i could access where password-protected and so was mine.. but i couldn�t access the personal files from my old user

I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. My other computers run XP and I wonder if there is not some conflict with the different operating systems trying to access the same files and printers? Finally I just decided to go back to XP..

I recently purchased a 20GB Maxtor OneTouch II USB hard drive and it came with Retrospect HD to back up my comptuer. The program will not do anyhting if i click setup so I can set it up to back up my computer. It also says ''updating status'' the whole time. Ihave left it at this screen for a long time and still nothing happened. I downloaded and installed the updrade for this from Maxtor's website, and it is still doign the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get this prgram working so I can back-up my computer?
If I use this to back-up my computer, and I use its restore feature, will I get problems on my computer that I currently have? (the main problem is with Windows Firewall, becuase i cannot enable it. My ocmptuer got infected a couple months ago and ever since is says it is controlled by Group Policy. For more detals on my problem click here I am using ZoneAlarm, but it will not work with my home network for sharing files and printers even though I have the IP address unblocked).
My system uses a SiS650 onboard graphics solution on a Windows XP computer, which obviously shares my main memory, and so i recently tried to fix this by installing a NVIDIA card.
I had problems with the NVIDIA card, and so decided to remove it and go back to the onboard graphics.
However, the onboard graphics card was listed in the hardware manager, but was said to have a fault and could not run. Another graphics option, Video Graphics Adapter, was listed beside it, and according to its properties was conflicting with the SiS.
So, I did the really smart and clever thing to do and disabled the Video Graphics Adapter, thinking that it would therefore allow the SiS to run without a conflict, and so restarted.
I imagine many of you are now rolling about with laughter,the OS wont be displayed at all, due to the fact i have most likely disabled ALL VGA cards...
I have tried booting in Safe Mode, but it doesnt work, it hangs, and i have tried booting in VGA mode, but again, it doesnt work.
Is there anyway to perhaps re-enable the VGA from the command line interface or something?
IE7 - Is there anyway to permanently get rid of the yellow "Internet Explorer is currently running with add-ons disabled" bar under the status bar at the top of the screen? I don't want to just disable "add-ons" - I want to get rid of that bar so it will stop reminding me.

BUT it still save my Files. I have my orginial files in my Documents folders and In my Program Files It has all the Programs and files that go with that program? How do I zap everything back on my desktop screen so I don't have to go Download each files as new again??? And I how do i get my Internet Favorite Links and my Notepad with my saved information in it? Yes I did try the "Start" and then program files and none of the programs are there.. BUT yet it is in my Program Hard drive C: Program files. with the Program and all it's content?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter reformatting the HD and reinstalling XP, I find that my Inspiron laptop doesn't have Stand By or Hibernate options. When I close the lid and re-open it it's nonresponsive on a black screen until I turn it off with the Power button. I thought HAL.DLL was missing -- I got that error message once -- but it's there in SYSTEM32 and the bootlog shows it installed as a driver. Is there another driver missing? (I can't decipher all those short file names.) Might it be the wrong HAL, a generic one supplied with the XP Re-Install CD? How do I find out?

I sadly do not have access to active directory, but do have an NT4 domain and Symantec Solution Suite 1 which includes a console for pushing out files and commands.My problem so far is that anything I do after SP2 is installed, but before the machine reboots with regard to firewall settings seems to be overwritten on reboot.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSP3 disabled the DVD functions on my Averatec 3200 series XP laptop. The DVD drive is made by QSI. I know this is a world wide issue, but have not found a recovery. My Hard Drive failed and I replaced it and have re-loaded XP using the supplied recovery disks. The DVD functions still do not work. I'm starting to suspect that the Bios or maybe an e-prom on the DVD drive board may have been buggered, else the re-load should have brought back the DVD functions.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was working this morning and I tried to put a flash drive in my usb port (one that I've used forever) and I got the following messages:"Administrator has restricted this computer to access usb/1394 mass storage devices"and "G:/ is not accessable Acess is denied" This is especially troubling for me since I've got to finish working on my syllabi and lessons for school and can't use my flash drive, plus I can't use my ipod, which is really irritating. I thought I was the administrator. I certainly haven't disabled anything at least not on purpose.

Need to retrieve some documents or I would just let it go. What is the answer? Box does'nt say it is trying to install anything. If I hit cancel, it grays out and freezes everything else. Tried running msconfig but as soon as I hit OK, the box appears.
