Home Edition Upgrade Disabled
Sep 26, 2009
Please can some one help me with this one I am just about to throw my laptop out of the window.I had a really bad virus on my laptop the other day and have had to re-install from the original recovery disc (laptop is HP pavillion entertainment Notebook PC - HP Pavillion dv1000 - about 3.5 years old). Luckily all of the data and emails are ok. The problem is that when I bought the laptop I also bought a legitimate XP Proffessional upgards with SP2, now when I go to install this it says that the original version on the laptop is newer than the upgrade, then another message says that the upgrade function has been disbaled. Can this be enabled again and can the upgrade be installed like before without losing any data.

Also, now when I boot it gets to a screen that shows my name and asks for a password, again, I just hit enter and it goes away, and I finally get to my desktop, how to get rid of this problem

I recently received a laptop that someone needs me to fix. The problem is that it seems at some point that some kind of update was interrupted during the process and the system will not load unless a windows xp professional edition disk is inserted to complete the update. I also cannot get it to start in safe mode. Unfortunately, I only have a home edition disk. Can I reformat XP pro with a home edition disk? If not, are there any other options?

I understand the concept behind the Windows XP Upgrade Edition where you
must have an O/S already installed before you can use your Upgrade CD to
bring it up to Windows XP.But I'm thinking, there's going to be a time when you are so frustrated
with the state your computer that you want to reinstall things afresh.
As this is usually down the track, are you up the creek without a paddle
if you haven't kept your old Windows 98 CD? Or is there some way of
forcing an Upgrade CD to do a full install?

Has anyone used anything from bootdisc.com? or any other site for this such thing. I know MS probably still has some around but try to buy one.

but I still get access denied, and each I have to do system restore to my pc to get back to how it was
I got in touch with microsoft and this what they want me to do, but to be honest I don't trust them I don't want to mess my system up, so would you please have a look at what they have sent me.

I ran into a Trojan and finally after many attempts to remove, ended up using Microsoft's malicious software removal tool. (Free) and Norton's 2002 with updates. No slowdowns now while on the Web or local use. However It takes forever to shutdown. I went in and changed the normal shutdown time from 20000 to 5000 that seemed to solve it. The next day it slowed down again. I followed the instructions at Microsoft's website called Startup and shutdown trouble shooter. I went to msconfig and followed instructions. I found that if I disabled tfswctrl.exe, It would shut down fast. I read in a posting that the file is a HP file concerning DVD or Cd operations and isn't essential. PS I did run REG Organizer 1.4 in the automatic reg cleaner mode and it found additional problems that it repaired and some bad folders and links that were bad. That didn't solve the shut down length.
So my question is there a way to solve this dilemma, like an update? or can I just keep it from running without effecting my 2 CD/dvd units. both are HP one is Cd write and DVD read and the other is DVD/CD write both.

I have an interesting upgrade dilemma.I had a PC at home with Windows 98. I legally bought in a store a Windows XP Pro SP1 upgrade disk 3 years ago to upgrade it. I eventually had Microsoft send me the free CD that upgrades to SP2.After 4 years, my PC completely died, motherboard failure. Being on a budget, I bought a PC with XP Home SP2 on it. I wanted to use my XP Pro disk to upgrade it (I would call Microsoft and explain the old PC was trashed, etc. to "reactivate"). But it says that I can't upgrade because the disk is an "older version", I presume because of the SP1 vs. SP2 issue. Is there any way I can do it with the disks I have?

No more M.E.Im researching gathering info before i install. The new hard drive wont have any previous partition or format on it. Will i still be able to run "setup windows xp" from the disk ? & patition/format from there.I plan to use the NTFS format. The new hard drive is 120gb twice as much as i need. Im thinking to create two 60gb partitions. Any suggestions on partioning & what to do with the second partiton ? Maybe a bootable ghost copy.I have read suggestions about unplugging hardware devices prior to O.S. install. Like internet, printer, sound card, & video. In doing so the O.S. has a better chance for successful install. Any thoughts on that ? Hopefully it will come together smoothly. I have had some rough ones in the past.

Anyway, when upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Pro earliler this week, everything seemed to work fine and all the program icons I had from Windows XP Home appeared on the XP Pro desktop. However, my Internet Broadband/Dial-Up connection dissapeared from 'Network Connections' and I therefore could not connect to the internet, even though the ISP ('BT Broadband' - I'm based in the UK in case you wonder who BT are) icon remained on my desktop and their software appeared in Programs.
When I contacted my ISP they claimed this is a problem with Windows XP upgrade to Pro and I should contact Microsoft Support. Is this true?
Anyway, I've had to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP Home again now in order to get back on the internet with my Broadband internet and installing my ISP's USM Modem software all over again. It worked, but still want to upgrade to XP Pro.
Any ideas on how this 'problem' can be resovled. Don't want to have to do a clean install again and again. Also, is It this a common problem with upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP Home as my ISP claim ?

i'm in the process of upgrading my PC and i want to get Windows XP, now, i have two questions, i have been told that Windows XP needs 4.5GB of space to install, this seems like an insane amount, and as i seem to only have 2.0GB available, not achievable, however, if this is not true, and i can install it, is the Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with SP2 what i need, as it says upgrade, does it mean upgrade from ME to XP? As that is what i have, or is it an upgrade from SP1 to SP2? Or do i need Windows XP Home Edition with SP2? Or should i get SP1? This is, however, if i have enough memory

When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.

I read the section on making an sp2 repair disk out of a sp1 disk but that seems like more work than reinstalling and updating the sp1 system.
