Desktop Display Controls Not Functioning Grayed Out
Jan 23, 2010
A Vostro Dell laptop protected by ESET--was apparently infected and shut down. I used a rescue disc to disable the malware, but computer would still not allow log in. Then I used the OEM Windows XP Home Edition disc that came with the computer to boot and then repair. Computer then booted and seemed to be working well. I uninstalled ESET (license was soon to expire) and installed Norton 360 and ran a comprehensive scan. Norton reported that it quarantined four files, one of them a trojan.
Computer now seems to be operating well with one exception. The malware had removed the desktop background photo. When I went to Display properties/Desktop to select a photo for display, the browse and position controls were grayed out and not functioning. By right clicking on the icon for a jpeg file, I can set it as desktop background; but I cannot control the position: center, stretch, tile.
Is Active Desktop Controls Greyed Out Ie Set As Background All Not An Option Also In Display Options Background Greyed Out So I Cannot Reset Or Restore Active Desktop Although At Boot Up My Previous Choice Of Desktop Background Shows Until The Icons Are Established Then The Screen Shows Active Desktop Has Been Turned Off Doesnt Support Do You Want To Run On This Page Tried Afew Thing Including Removing Security Programmesr
noticed an icon on my desktop representing the email I had read (and deleted). Now I can't delete the icon. It is grayed out and I get the message "Cannot delete file: cannot read from source disk or file"-no kidding. How do I get rid of this thing?
old Stylus 400 and a Stylus Photo RX620. They both work fine up to this morning. They will print every thing that comes up with the exception the have stopped printing any thing that I have of Corel WordPerfect 12. The window come us stating "preparing document" and nothing happens. This anomaly is driving me up a wall.
I have a Dell computer running Windows XP. All of a sudden Taskbar not functioning. I right click on it and nothing. Also CTL+ALT+DEL is not functioning as well.
I am using a video production system that a great deal of RAM, sometimes over a gigabite at a time. To accommodate this need, I am trying to eliminate as much resident memory as possible. Since I turn off all internet connections at such times, any Windows-based files relating to internet work can be eliminated Indeed, I have found that even explorer can be removed and I can use task manager to start the program. Can anyone tell me what Windows files are essential for proper functioning when off line?
I cannot change desktop wallpaper. The Desktop tab under Display Properties has all of the available options for wallpaper in gray. I also cannot click "Browse."Also I cannot choose a picture to "set as Desktop Background."
Desktop preview screen is blank, however, the image does display on the desktop. Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. Some of the regular Windows images, i.e. Azul, Windows XP, etc. have the film icon, and do not display in preview.
On display i have desktop themes and background choices. i imported a picture from my computer, from using the browse function but it imported the whole folder of pictures. how do i remove the pictures it imported into this background box please. this is slowing my dell down to a snails pace on start up and shut down.
Another problem, I've had it for a while, and it's not huge, but it would be interesting to see if anyone knows a fix for it.My desktop tab in display properties has gone missing. I've tried various regentries (downloaded off the net mostly) to try and work this back in, but none of them work.i've also looked at the current user registry settings, and all are in shape. i'm running XP Home and so there's no group settings from the run menu, :s i can't imagine what it cuold be :S
I am running Windows Xp Pro on a network. I have version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600. My problem is that last Friday my desktop icons started having a blue back ground behind them. I have tried right clicking on the desktop and clicking properties then the desktop tab and there I can change the background colors, but I want the background to go away totally. I used to have just the icon and words with no back ground color at all. Can anyone help? I've compared the setting on this laptop to my other one at home and didn't come up with anything there. I also tried to restore the system to a date prior to Friday, but I get the message can not restore for every restore point I have chosen.
For about a week I have been unable to put shortcut icons on my Desktop. Also, downloaded program icons (with the "exe") do not appear on the desktop, although if I use Ws Explorer they appear in Desktop. What has gone wrong? How do I fix the problem?
while changing the background colour to my desktop from blue to black, i was told to "please wait" while it changed the colour. as i was waiting, the whole monitor except for the "please wait" box went black and white. you know, i actually kind of liked it. it wouldn't be bad to work in black and white from time to time for a change.
Below is a easy way to choose what windows icons you want to display on the desktop.Rightclick on the desktop and select "properties".In the new "display properties" window, click on the "desktop" tab.Hit the "customize desktop." button at the bottom of the window. Now you can select the icons you want.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. I find the cursor involuntarily slipping back while typing and also the scroll function of the tough pad not functioning. Dell had got the touchpad replaced. The problem is continuing. The slipping back is now less frequent. I had downloaded the driver for the touch pad. Then the scrolling revived. [On downloading the driver, the Mouse Properties had 10 tabs as against 5 earlier including the tab "scrolling"]. But again I have now only five tabs in the Mouse Properties. Can any of you help me to get over these to problems?
I am trying to speed my XP. So I decided to check at ADD AND/OR REMOVE PROGRAMS folder for stuff I could throw away. And there were at least four versions of Java (TM) Updates 2, 3, 5, 7 each one averaging 114 MB. My question is: Can I delete Updates 2, 3 and 5 ? I don't know at all if each Java update is functioning based on the previous one. Can I live only with the last Update, the number 7 ? Or I am just sheltering a lot of space I need for other programs I would like to install.
I recently had an annoying pop-up on my screen telling me I was infected , my Norton had expired so I loaded all the McAfee gubbins I got with my EasyNote E2 in 2005, after doing a scan it found 1 trojan and about 15 potentially harmful things! Not thinking , I deleted the lot even though it said that some files may be linked to applications and now when I boot up I get the PB purple screen, then the XP screen and the blue welcome screen, after this I see the picture I set as wallpaper stretched over the entire screen, then the screen goes pink (colour I chose for background) but once the icons start appearing on the desktop the screen goes white with a slight tinge of pink aound the icons. I can't even browse for pics to set as wallpaper and when I go into MY PICTURES and right click to "set as wallpaper" nothing happens.
I'm having problems with my desktop resizing itself after reboot. After rebooting, the left side of the desktop has a large black border that is 7" wide. The rest of the desktop then is not displayed properly size wise. Things on the right are not visible due to that left sided problem. I'm unable to take the cursor any further than where that border is. It's as if that area of the display doesn't exist. I've discovered if I right click the desktop there is an option called Graphics Options. There are two sub menus with one being panel fit and the other is rotation. To remedy the size problem I click panel fit and choose either full screen (no border)or maintain aspect ratio. Click the option that doesn't have a check mark beside it. There seems to be no correct choice in choosing this because both options do work. Always choose the opposite one. I've found the panel fit settings are located in my intel graphics media accelerator driver area.
After logging in to windows 2000, personal settings and everything have loaded without error but a plain grey screen appears with no desktop. In the task manager, the system idle process shows 99% cpu usage. Problem exists in safe mode also. Ran a chkdsk with no errors found.
But now, just relizing this, my "Desktop" tab is missing from my Display Properties. I am running XP SP2I have entered "gpedit.msc" after i clicked run from the start menu, i just get an error. So i couldn't follow http://www.theeldergeek.com/desktop_...om_display.htmIts jsut very sad as i just got 150 Themes for my computer and i wanna use them! but i can't since the Desktop Tab is missing.
My computer will not respond or work at a regular speed. For no apparent reason, it recently decided to perform so slowly that log in is either impossible or takes a half hour at minimum (seriously). I started in safe mode and did system restore to a date that is definitely safe, and still nothing. It's as slow as ever. One thing that may cause problems : The work offline pop-up. This computer does not go online and has NO network connections, but this pop-up persists, and did appear right before I had this problem.
Have been trying to fix my dad's computer which has been having a series of Blue screen problems realated to BAD_POOL_CALLER. Followed advice on Microsoft site and invoked Driver Verifier Manager and used Standard settings.
system won't reboot at all. I can get into BIOS area but once it continues past that the wireless keyboard is disabled and therefore I can't select Safe Mode or Last working config mode. It continues into Windows XP and then crashes and reboots again.Ideally I need to be able to make the wireless keyboard work so I can get into Safe Mode, uninvoke the Driver Verifier somehow at the BIOS stage
I have downloaded an ActiveX control that gives me annoying popups. I have forgotten the name of the control. Here is my Hijack This report.
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:24:02 PM, on 2/11/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011)
I got a huge hullabaloo and 'Malwarealarm' installed randomly ( I got it from a popup when Firefox told me the site was spywarefilled) and the computer was fine. I restart once, and I loose my background, my ability to select a background from the 'Desktop' tab under rightclick-properties on the desktop itself became null (just a black screen), and proceed to try a myriad of things. Installed the new DirectX driver, new ATI Videocard driver, DirectX9.0, rolled back to ATI Xtasy driver, then tried installing DirectX9.0 again. Run virusscan and spywarescans, got rid of a bunch of stupid cookies. When I login or logout of Windows, my old background appears for a second, then disappears once more.
My sister-in-laws' desktop will not display a background. The screen briefly shows her picture and then turns blue and only displays her desktop icons. The display background choices in the control panel are all inoperable and the little screen showing the display preview is white. I had previously changed the font setting from extra large to medium and these settings work.
A problem regarding desktop display settings. When the desktop resolution is set to 1024x768, everything is perfect. However, when I change the resolution to 800x600, everything is very bad quality such as text and images. This corruption also affects fullscreen applications that run in a lower resolution than 1024x768.
I was trying to improve my monitor display and did something that is causing text fields to be blacked out. I can see icons and what I think are highlighted text but most of it is all black so I can't see the settings to try to fix??? The monitor works fine and the XP start up graphics are normal. It's just once the desktop is loaded.
