Can anyone tell me what Windows files are essential for proper functioning when off line?
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. I find the cursor involuntarily slipping back while typing and also the scroll function of the tough pad not functioning. Dell had got the touchpad replaced. The problem is continuing. The slipping back is now less frequent. I had downloaded the driver for the touch pad. Then the scrolling revived. [On downloading the driver, the Mouse Properties had 10 tabs as against 5 earlier including the tab "scrolling"]. But again I have now only five tabs in the Mouse Properties. Can any of you help me to get over these to problems?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to speed my XP. So I decided to check at ADD AND/OR REMOVE PROGRAMS folder for stuff I could throw away. And there were at least four versions of Java (TM) Updates 2, 3, 5, 7 each one averaging 114 MB. My question is: Can I delete Updates 2, 3 and 5 ? I don't know at all if each Java update is functioning based on the previous one. Can I live only with the last Update, the number 7 ? Or I am just sheltering a lot of space I need for other programs I would like to install.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA Vostro Dell laptop protected by ESET--was apparently infected and shut down. I used a rescue disc to disable the malware, but computer would still not allow log in. Then I used the OEM Windows XP Home Edition disc that came with the computer to boot and then repair. Computer then booted and seemed to be working well. I uninstalled ESET (license was soon to expire) and installed Norton 360 and ran a comprehensive scan. Norton reported that it quarantined four files, one of them a trojan.
Computer now seems to be operating well with one exception. The malware had removed the desktop background photo. When I went to Display properties/Desktop to select a photo for display, the browse and position controls were grayed out and not functioning. By right clicking on the icon for a jpeg file, I can set it as desktop background; but I cannot control the position: center, stretch, tile.
My computer will not respond or work at a regular speed. For no apparent reason, it recently decided to perform so slowly that log in is either impossible or takes a half hour at minimum (seriously). I started in safe mode and did system restore to a date that is definitely safe, and still nothing. It's as slow as ever. One thing that may cause problems : The work offline pop-up. This computer does not go online and has NO network connections, but this pop-up persists, and did appear right before I had this problem.

Well I reinstalled XP SP2 then after working for awhile i noticed my sound was not functioning. The icon was not showing up on the toolbar currently running programs( which it usually does ). Then went into ADDRomove programs to uninstall. I recieved an error " The RPC server is unavailable ". I then saw that sound devices in Properties said it was not working properly, well after everything I thought a SYSTEM REPAIR would work that didn't work eighter. Then i saw in MSCONFIG there was one Service that was unchecked DCOM server process, this service would stay that way evertime i restarted. So I then reinstalled the sound software from a CD. In installation the error code 110, RPC "server unavailable or has been corrupted".

I plugged in my pen tablet to use it as a mouse instead, and noticed the tablet driver stopped functioning too (I can still use it as a mouse, but it doesn't work as well without the driver). I then tried to connect to the internet to diagnose the problem, but the net isn't working. I restarted my router and modem, but no progress.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWith XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt -
Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I've just switched from 98 to XP. I find now that the window designations in the taskbar for my *browser windows only* are severely and unaccountably truncated. My browser is IE6. Even if there's only one window open, if it's a browser window, only one letter will display. Other windows will properly display the full name. I've turned taskbar grouping on and off with no change. I've also run the SFC utility, with no change. There is no such problem in my Win98 machine, and my security settings (and all other settings) are the same. I don't wish to upgrade to IE7.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.

Right-clicking the taskbar even in the program is uncool. The catch is, I can execute any CP dialog EXCEPT this one as a command line, either passing a dialog parameter to Control.exe or else using a *.cpl file name with Control.exe or directly. But I can't find "Taskbar and Start Menu".

View 6 Replies View RelatedI didn't make a wise decision. I used a clean up program called ET Remover and it was going to remove something from the registry. But when it tried to, it didn't work saying that it was being used by another program. So I went into the registry and took it out. Dumb.I'm not completely sure if that's why I have this problem, but it seems like a likely candidate. Under my taskbar there is a line which is not supposed to be there. I took a picture of it with my camera because it wouldn't show up in print screen. Made it red so it was easy to see in the picture. It has a shaking like effect. If I open a window of something and move it around I can see it moving in the bottom space. I also have a program called windows blinds, but I dont think that's the problem. It's not the monitor either. I ran a symantec scan, but I really doubt that could be it. I also tried a system restore to no avial.

Sometimes I cannot right click on the taskbar either. It is even worst when I cannot open any new console window i.e cannot open new window explorer, cannot open chat log. Has anyone ever got the same problem? And does anyone know how to solve it. Note that I have just reinstalled my Window a few days ago. However, after installing since the svchost runs continuously, I followed some guides on the net to unregister/register some services. Not sure, if it causes problem or not but at least it can stop svchost from running continuously.

Usually you can unlock it and put your mouse cursor at the top and drag it down or up. this one you can drag up but it won't go down. View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed IE7, and I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problem, but ever since right around then, sometimes when I right click on my Google Talk icon in the right side of the taskbar, the Gtalk menu will pop up as always, but the taskbar menu (which says "Lock the taskbar", etc.) will pop up over it, so I can't access, say, the "Check mail now" command. This doesn't always happen, maybe 25-50% of the time. In addition to that, my Microsoft Excel Help will crash sometimes when I try to open up a help window in it, and sometimes when I open Winamp and am navigating through my music library, right around when I try to play some songs, Winamp will crash. If any of these issues are related, but they are all problems that happen between 25% and 50% of the time, and all started recently, around the time I installed IE 7.

The date quit showing when I hovered the cursor on the clock. While playing around with it the entire Start, taskbar, notification, and clock ended up on right side of the screen. Once back on bottom (hopefully), how do I get the date to show (it's hidden under systray. I can see a small sliver peeking up)?
