A problem regarding desktop display settings. When the desktop resolution is set to 1024x768, everything is perfect. However, when I change the resolution to 800x600, everything is very bad quality such as text and images.This corruption also affects fullscreen applications that run in a lower resolution than 1024x768.
View 7 RepliesI had a virus (supposedly) that was ending my explorer.exe over and over again, and the process in the task manager that appeared to be doing so was IEXPLORE.EXE, I know thats IE, but I figured since IE is broken on my computer (go figure) and I have FireFox, why not attempt to delete IE, because every time I ended the process it would come back.So I went into safe mode, I went and deleted the whole IE program folder (stupid thinking) and went back into normal windows. What I saw scared me... I had 4 bit colors (which is what I'm on right now typing to you guys) and 800x600 resolution, and I can't put it any higher.

I was wondering if this would be fixed if I upgrade the firmware settings and if so where would I get these upgrades? View 6 Replies View RelatedI was restarting my computer and right after I restarted my computer the resolution was as low as it could be and my display(graphics) setting was very, very low. so low that it is using like 4 bit color and stuff. And I went into display properties and changd my res and my color bit back to the highest,but it wouldnt change, but yet again it said the highest was like 32 bit and im pretty sure there was 256 or something higher.

2: I have 2 computers that are virtually the same. Both have XP Pro opperating system. I am the webmaster for a couple of sites. there is a menu at the left of the site. On one computer the menu will display on the other is will not. The menue is an applet code . Is there a setting on the second computer that I am missing to display this menue?
3: for years I used Norton. When I loaded XP I used it a day or so and then loaded Norton on that PC. It slowed it down very much. So much that I took it back off. Now I need a suggestion on what virus scan will be as good as Norton but not slow my PC down so much.

I started a new thread because it is a different problem, and because it may be a Viewsonic monitor or ATI screen driver problem rather than a Windows-XP problem.When I have the screen resolution set to 1024*768 the desktop fits neatly into the monitor.When I tried it at 1280*720 the desktop fits neatly into the monitor, but the graphics and text look as though they are stretched vertically - ie too tall for their width.When I tried it at 1280*768 the proportions looked right, but the desktop seems to have been moved up and to the left. That is, there is about a 2cm black band to the right of the display, between the right edge of the monitor and the right edge of the display; and there is about a 1cm black band below the desktop.When I tried it at 1280*800, just for completeness, the whole desktop seems to overlap the limits of the monitor. That is, the icons on the left are half hidden 'behind' the monitor, and the task bar at the bottom is barely in sight at the bottom edge of the monitor.I don't remember having this problem in the past, but it's been quite a while.

Instead of filling the whole displayr I end up with a Window in the centre of the display that gets smaller as I change the screen resolution to less. View 1 Replies View RelatedWe've just purchased a new monitor for out PC with a better resolution than our previous one. Basically, my dad wants to have his user account set at 1280x768, whereas I want to use the best resolution of the monitor which is 1440x900.
On the previous monitor, I seemed to be able to make it so that different user accounts could have their own resolutions. However, when I've tried changing the resolution in my dad's account, when I go back to my account, it is set as my dad's resolution. If I change it back to mine, then my dad's account changes to mine too.
Is there a way I can make it so that each account can have their own resolution set?
installed a file manager for his mobile phone and it's put a folder on the desktop which I cannot seem to remove. I right click it but there is no delete option for it. Even when I open it, I can't find any options to remove it either. Does any one have any idea as to how I might be able to remove this folder from my desktop? It's appeared on all user accounts

I cannot change desktop wallpaper.The Desktop tab under Display Properties has all of the available options for wallpaper in gray. I also cannot click "Browse."Also I cannot choose a picture to "set as Desktop Background."

Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. Some of the regular Windows images, i.e. Azul, Windows XP, etc. have the film icon, and do not display in preview.

My problem is that last Friday my desktop icons started having a blue back ground behind them. I have tried right clicking on the desktop and clicking properties then the desktop tab and there I can change the background colors, but I want the background to go away totally. I used to have just the icon and words with no back ground color at all. Can anyone help? I've compared the setting on this laptop to my other one at home and didn't come up with anything there. I also tried to restore the system to a date prior to Friday, but I get the message can not restore for every restore point I have chosen.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently had an annoying pop-up on my screen telling me I was infected , my Norton had expired so I loaded all the McAfee gubbins I got with my EasyNote E2 in 2005, after doing a scan it found 1 trojan and about 15 potentially harmful things! Not thinking , I deleted the lot even though it said that some files may be linked to applications and now when I boot up I get the PB purple screen, then the XP screen and the blue welcome screen, after this I see the picture I set as wallpaper stretched over the entire screen, then the screen goes pink (colour I chose for background) but once the icons start appearing on the desktop the screen goes white with a slight tinge of pink aound the icons. I can't even browse for pics to set as wallpaper and when I go into MY PICTURES and right click to "set as wallpaper" nothing happens.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with my desktop resizing itself after reboot. After rebooting, the left side of the desktop has a large black border that is 7" wide. The rest of the desktop then is not displayed properly size wise. Things on the right are not visible due to that left sided problem. I'm unable to take the cursor any further than where that border is. It's as if that area of the display doesn't exist. I've discovered if I right click the desktop there is an option called Graphics Options. There are two sub menus with one being panel fit and the other is rotation. To remedy the size problem I click panel fit and choose either full screen (no border)or maintain aspect ratio. Click the option that doesn't have a check mark beside it. There seems to be no correct choice in choosing this because both options do work. Always choose the opposite one. I've found the panel fit settings are located in my intel graphics media accelerator driver area.

In the task manager, the system idle process shows 99% cpu usage. Problem exists in safe mode also. Ran a chkdsk with no errors found.

When you turn on the power, the motherboard does it's loading screen and then i have the option of the BIOS and everything. You all know how that works. Then, the whole thing resets.I've tried reinstalling Windows XP. That worked for a little while. Now it is doing this again. I thought that a possible fix might possibly be a boot disk. So, I changed the boot order on his computer and put in an XP boot disk. It is still going through this only to reset itself again and again. I have even left it alone to see if it would just finally get tired of it and load the OS, but it continues for hours.I deal mostly with hardware, so I'm kind of at a loss.

It's my hope that you guys can help me out. Don't let me down.Ok, here's the story. Despite all the vista nay-sayers, I decided to try it out anyway. I installed Vista Ultimate on my Compaq Presario sr1910nx. It worked relatively well, until one time I booted up - or at least, I tried. I was given the infinitely descriptive error message: "Missing Operating System". I decided that, well, Vista hadn't really met my expectations, so I popped my XP Home SP2 CD back in the drive, and went back. The install went smoothly. I deleted existing partitions on my hard drive, and then installed XP to the resulting unpartitioned space. So, I welcomed my XP desktop with open arms.
It didn't do the same for me. XP fails to recognize most of my hardware, including but not limited to my network adapter and cd-rom drive. Needless to say, this has resulted in some serious issues; I cannot connect to the internet, because XP refuses to realize that I have a connection. I can't even re-install XP from a CD, because XP won't recognize that, either.I tried mounting an XP .iso with Daemon tools. No dice, the installer wants a CD drive just as much as I do.So, I downloaded some driver identification tools to a USB drive from my laptop and ran them on my desktop.The problem? They need the internet to identify the hardware.So now I'm lost.My desktop box is now incommunicado, and unable to reinstall the OS. This is where I need you guys to come in. I've checked the compaq website for the drivers, and they're not there; that, or I've missed something.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got a huge hullabaloo and 'Malwarealarm' installed randomly ( I got it from a popup when Firefox told me the site was spywarefilled) and the computer was fine. I restart once, and I loose my background, my ability to select a background from the 'Desktop' tab under rightclick-properties on the desktop itself became null (just a black screen), and proceed to try a myriad of things. Installed the new DirectX driver, new ATI Videocard driver, DirectX9.0, rolled back to ATI Xtasy driver, then tried installing DirectX9.0 again. Run virusscan and spywarescans, got rid of a bunch of stupid cookies. When I login or logout of Windows, my old background appears for a second, then disappears once more.
