I'm not sure what's wrong but it takes like 1 min to open a document, or to start up a program. I'm not quite sure how to fix it, because I'm not quite sure what's wrong.It started happening like a week ago... So my computer didn't start out like this

View 10 Replies View RelatedOur family computer is running like a slug. It takes forever to startup and open programs and the hard drive activity light is always on. It also uses up a lot of RAM for some reason but the CPU usage is normal. I have another hard drive that is in a removable tray that I use, and that has all the same settings and everything, but that one is using a fraction of the RAM and runs pretty good!

I have a Gateway, Windows XP laptop that's about 1 year old. A little over a week ago, it started "running slow". It's slow to start up (takes about 5-10 min), the mouse "sticks" sometimes although that is an intermittent problem, when I have multiple applications minimized (outlook express, firefox, My Documents, AIM), it's slow to toggle between them, and it's slow to open folders in My Documents.
I was wondering why or if anyone knew why a PC is slow in opening/loading programs. For instance it takes awhile before my Norton loads on my screen and my IncrediMail takes a while before it starts/loads too.
View 14 Replies View RelatedTried 4 times in a row to open MSN Messenger and got no response. Windows task manager showed only one other program that I had open at the time. So I decided to reboot and see if that helped. While shutting down I got "end program" 4 times in a row. Not sure if this is a big deal. Is something lurking somewhere that might be causing this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i open IE6 it takes over a minute for the webpage to appear and meanwhile i cant minimise it etc...... It looks like the program is failing to respond but doesn't say so. Once loaded browsing is normal, althought every time a separate IE window is opened the initial slow response applies followed by normal browsing.

The numlock and scroll lock keys beep and light up on and off continuosly; if I try to open any Windows programs, ALL of the Windows programs start to pop open all over the desktop; it won't even dial the internet connection, so I can't get online. It won't go on standby by itself, and if I choose standby on the shutdown menu, it goes into standby for about 5 minutes and then goes back to the desktop, even after I've logged off!
I am able to open any games or programs that aren't Microsoft without other programs popping open, but the numlock and scroll lock keys still flash and beep all the time.
I have Earthlink ISP and use their anti-virus, pop-up blocker, spyblocker, spam filter, and firewall, along with Ad-aware and Xoftspy. No viruses or spyware are found when I run them.
I've recently started worrying about spyware and viruses now my connection is being leeched by some outside source.I started downloading programs to remove spyware, viruses, and trojans.I open certain programs, they are shut down immediately. I experience the same problem with msconfig. I have a feeling that it's a virus trying to keep me from running programs which could find and delete it.I cannot run msconfig, TDS-03, The Cleaner, Norton Anti-virus, or HiJack This unless I am in safe mode. AdAwareSE and Spybot:S&D do work and I have used them to fix all problems that they found.

The box opens quickly but the drives take 20 seconds to show up. I have disabled windows image aquisition service and turned off Automatically search for network drives and folders. This computer is used to connect to three different hospitals websites with citrix and other web based portals. Is it possible that some of the active x controls that make it possible for the desktop to log in securely to the hospitals have caused this issue? If so how can I fix it without a reformat.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am on an XP2 home edition pc - toshiba satellite celeron. Within the past few days, I've had a terrible time with slow keystroke response. I first noticed this a month or so ago whilst in the MSN Spaces blog sites on just a few of the spaces that I frequented. Now, it seems to be every place (even here while I'm typing this). However, it doesn't seem to be a problem with MSN messenger, or Skype. I've run 2 different spyware apps (Spyware doctor & spybot search & destroy) and a full virus scan (avast). I did a restore back to June 13, prior to the Microsoft updates. Still the slow response is happening.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis issue is occurring on 2 computers - In the past 2 weeks Windows updates cause MAJOR lag in operations - can't open apps, slow response from browser.Updates mostly hang in the 30% range and do not move forward for hours....I leave the computers on over night to complete and sometimes the operation is still not complete.Have disabled auto updates to no avail. It still activates on reboot.
Where is the location of the temp files for the updates so they can be deleted to start fresh without autoupdate?
I've read other threads recently regarding update problems but didn't want to hijack them with my own issue.
Whether opening the browser or Windows explorer or a software programs - this thing is like pulling teeth. It wasn't that bad the other day and it seems like overnight it got unbearable. I did a disk cleanup

Yesterday, my dad downloaded jzip and winrar and a free video editing software from AVS, I believe it is AVS 4 Editor. Soon after that whenever I did a right click, the response seemed to lag and slow to come up. Any selection I clicked from the right click selection would seem to hang there on the screen even though the computer processed it. It goes away after I right click again but not select.It only happens when I right click on the desktop, start menu, taskbar. When I right click in my browser firefox, it is alright. I unistalled AVS4 but the problem persists. All my programs are running fine. The rick click slowness is just nagging.

My comp is slow with programs (especially opening) and also on the internet. Aso, my processing light is always on, no flicker, just a solid light. I usually get frustrated and shut it down. View 3 Replies View RelatedI've run a number of anti-virus programs including Kaspersky, Avira and Avast. I've used Spyware Terminator, Super Anti-Spyware and Ad-Ware. Numerous runs of these programs has not solved the problem. I have not added any new hardware or other programs (besides the spyware and anti-virus). I've tried disabling the resident antivirus program, Avast but that doesn't seem to improve the situation. I am Any ideas about how to proceed from here?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy computer has been running really well for the longest time. I've had no problems at all. Then just like 2 days ago my computer started running really slow. Whenever I open up a messenger it hangs and then freezes. I ran my spybot detector and there were a few things but I got rid of them. My virus scan was clear and I also ran my disk defragmenter. I'm not sure if I got a virus somehow. I deleted all my cookies and files.
