Can't Open Apps, Slow Response From Browser

This issue is occurring on 2 computers - In the past 2 weeks Windows updates cause MAJOR lag in operations - can't open apps, slow response from browser.Updates mostly hang in the 30% range and do not move forward for hours....I leave the computers on over night to complete and sometimes the operation is still not complete.Have disabled auto updates to no avail. It still activates on reboot.

Where is the location of the temp files for the updates so they can be deleted to start fresh without autoupdate?

I've read other threads recently regarding update problems but didn't want to hijack them with my own issue.

Browser Really Slow When Open New Page

My computer is working fine other than the browser (IE6). It takes about 2 minutes to open a page. Once opened it works fine. My home page is google, I can see the page right away but it's frozen. It stays that way for about 2 minutes then it works fine. No other problems arise until it tries to open a new page. Then the same thing happens again. I emptied all the offline and temp Internet files. Also emptied cookies and history. Ran spybot and adaware but it had no effect.

Computer Booting Incredibly Slow And All Apps Slow

I am running PC, Windows XP and recently had several viruses deleted from system. Problem started when running Internet Explorer and would receive an error tab every time stating IE must close. The data error was a mcsvrt.dll problem. Now when I start the computer it takes 10-15 minutes to boot completely and accessing Mozilla or any apps after about 3-4 mins takes ages. It runs so slow, something has it almost completely bogged down. I run spybot but after a while it freezes up

IE 6 Slow Loading - Initial Slow Response Applies Followed By Normal Browsing?

When i open IE6 it takes over a minute for the webpage to appear and meanwhile i cant minimise it etc...... It looks like the program is failing to respond but doesn't say so. Once loaded browsing is normal, althought every time a separate IE window is opened the initial slow response applies followed by normal browsing.

Folders Open Command Window Not Apps

I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.

Default Browser - Can Open MSN Messenger In Browser

Is there any way to have a default Browser? I want every program that has links to open up in say. Firefox, I have tried setting it as my default browser in the settings option, and in "Set programs access and defaults". It works quite well... But can I get MSN Messenger to open up in that browser? When I click on my e-mails or MSN Space Etc. It opens up in Internet Explorer. Is there ANY way to open it in my default browser?

Keystroke Delay - Slow Response

I am on an XP2 home edition pc - toshiba satellite celeron. Within the past few days, I've had a terrible time with slow keystroke response. I first noticed this a month or so ago whilst in the MSN Spaces blog sites on just a few of the spaces that I frequented. Now, it seems to be every place (even here while I'm typing this). However, it doesn't seem to be a problem with MSN messenger, or Skype. I've run 2 different spyware apps (Spyware doctor & spybot search & destroy) and a full virus scan (avast). I did a restore back to June 13, prior to the Microsoft updates. Still the slow response is happening.

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP. My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked, Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues. This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare

Winrar And Free Video - Right Click Response Seemed To Lag And Slow To Come Up

My parents have a gateway home computer upgraded to Vista with SP1. Yesterday, my dad downloaded jzip and winrar and a free video editing software from AVS, I believe it is AVS 4 Editor. Soon after that whenever I did a right click, the response seemed to lag and slow to come up. Any selection I clicked from the right click selection would seem to hang there on the screen even though the computer processed it. It goes away after I right click again but not select.It only happens when I right click on the desktop, start menu, taskbar. When I right click in my browser firefox, it is alright. I unistalled AVS4 but the problem persists. All my programs are running fine. The rick click slowness is just nagging.

Browser Wont Open - Open Under Task Manager

My browsers, particularly IE (6) dont always respond when I try to open them. With IE about half the time when I click the icon nothing happens. If a then check task manager IE is indeed running and taking up about 14K of memory, but it never opens. If I try opening it again another instance will just open under task manager and nothing will show up. Now if I end all the IE processes in there and then start IE again it'll be fine. But I need to get this fixed.

I've got a system that's in pop-up hell and i can't figure it out.I've run avg anti-spyware and ad-aware, both updated. AVG found a lot of stuff which i told it to delete. I recently reformatted and installed Windows XP Home fresh on both my desktop and laptop. All worked fine even after getting updated until the last update on each. On the desktop it included Service pack 2 update but not on the laptop, it was a new update but still has only service pack 1. On each computer the browsers both IE6 and foxfire started running very slow. IT would take many seconds to get new pages open. On the laptop I restored and IE6 works fine but I am still having a problem with Foxfire and it also received a Foxfire update. Any idea how to fix this problem without restoring and losing the needed update? I have run XP on both systems for a good while and never had this problem.

when the malware paytime.exe attacked my pc. It turned off my firewall(SP2 Firewall), real-time virus scanner(Trend microoffice client,not using its firewall, provided by my service provider). With the help of hijackthis, spybot and ewido and also the interent , able to delete paytime.exe and its related files.

I am able to control my firewall. Thats the only success BUT when I click nvmixer.exe in my taskbar, it shows visual C++ runtime error and my virus scanner is saying that officescan client has not started. So in control panel I entered in administrative tools and tried manually to start real time scan process but I failed again. It shows cannot start this process in safe mode.The same thing is repeated for other processes like error reporting etc. I am booting in normal mode only but its showing cant run in safe mode.

When I click a link, the windows icon in the top right moves. As soon as I move my mouse that icon stops and I have no idea why this happens. Web Address Mozilla / Operal Aol Pops Open Not Browser

I finally completely crashed my computer because of my inability to accept my computer knowledge level. The Geek Squad sent a nice young man and I'm $350 lighter (plus the $75.00 I used to buy a back up external hard drive a few days after the Geek repair). He saved my pictures and my large I-Tunes library and he fixed the computer. He says it's a solid machine (Sony VAIO, over 1 Gb, 5 years old, don't know any more info) and it probably has a few more years in it. I lost all my programs, but most were free. AVG and Adobe were very cool in giving me new licenses to download programs that I had purchased very recently.

Anyway, I don't know how much of that is relevant accept that the Geek guy messed me up with my default browser. We specifically talked in detail about what I use and what programs I had. AOL has been my e-mail address since AOL started. Everyone, business and otherwise has the address so it is what I use for e-mail only. For a browser I almost totally use Mozilla, although I've been playing a little bit with Opera lately. The problem is that the kid made AOL my default browser. Every time I type a web address in Mozilla or Opera AOL pops open. It even pops open when I'm not in a browser. It states that it is opening because it is set as the default browser. Mozilla told me how to change that, but when I went to the Internet Properties area I saw that the kid didn't even list Mozilla. He put AOL as default. He listed Opera, Outlook Express (which I've never used) and MSN (they must pay these guys a commission because I had all kinds of Microsoft programs I've had to remove). I'm sure that I had something listed as my default browser before but it never did this. I can't find a place to type in or somehow add Mozilla. Can anyone help? Sorry this is so long for what is hopefully not a big problem.

I have a Sony laptop (about 2 yrs old) with Windows XP professional. My computer has gotten pretty slow, for example, booting up and loading the desktop when I switch applications. There doesn't seem to be anything obviously wrong. I run a disk defragmenter and Spy Sweeper all the time and just downloaded and ran Ad-aware. My hard drive is partitioned -- is that a problem?? -- and there are 2.45 GB of free space out of 9.76 on my C: drive, and 6 GB of space out of 8.85 on my D: drive. I need some advice on what might be wrong. Please! Oh, also, I downloaded a browser called Wanadoo so I could get online in Paris and though I've uninstalled it, it's taken over my other browsers so the top of the web page always reads the page name dash Wanadoo. I had a manual IP & DNS in my network TCP/IP settings and so I decided to go back to automatic settings and let my Linksys give me a local IP. Problem is that when I did that then I couldnt access the internet. I could access the Linksys control panel but not the internet.So I manually put in a DNS entry which is the address of my Linksys and then I can browse, but the browsing is still very slow.I am not sure what to do.. any thoughts? My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.

internet speeds:
2500kbps/400kbps

Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.
