I thought I'd be cool and upgrade my XP home to XP pro. I installed OS successfully thinking that I was upgrading and booted the computer. It starts just fine but where I pick what OS I boot to it has BOTH Pro and Home versions to pick from as well as the recovery console. How do I get rid of the home version without doing a complete backup and reformat of the partition.
View 8 RepliesI had to reformat my computer due to the fact that It wasn't booting anymore for some reason..well I tried setting it up and when it comes to the OS setup screen it told me it was going to install XP Pro. I was actually using my friends CD so I didn't know what OS was gonna install...so I didn't have the right key because my key is for MCE 2005, so I get my CD to install MCE 2005. I guess my computer still thinks it's about to install XP Pro and i get this fatal error that says, "An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error."

What I was qondering is that is there any program that will backup my whole hard drive onto another hard drive I have and then when I get my new one all my settings will be the same. by the way I am aware I can just use my other hard drive as mine but I need that for anyther computer later

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with a partitioned HD. All of the data (operating sytem, documents, etc...) are on the small partition, and now I'm out of space. What's the easiest way to:
1. transfer everything on the smaller partition (operating sys included) to the larger partition and boot from there - OR -
2. make an exact copy of the smaller partition, reformat the drive without a partition, and replace the data. I'm running Windows XP Professional.
I decided to format my computer because it was going really slow...So i got paragon partition manager and created a logical partition called "backup" and dragged all my important files into that partition. then i used killdisk to format my C: partition. Now i use my recovery disk and it says " All files, including data files on the user partition will be lost and the original factory shipped files will will be recovered to the users partition." Will this delete my backup partition too? If it does, how do i recover windows while keeping my partition with the backup files on it? The files are reallly important...

I wish to upgrade to a new larger HDD.I have lost the single copy of the xp operating system that the laptop allows me to make from the backup partition.I have tried to copy both the active partition and the backup partition using Norton Ghost. Both times it did not allow this.How can i copy either of these partitions or get the laptop allow me to make a fresh copy of xp.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.
when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer.If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.

Im using the "copy" option.so nothing has been appended or incremental.Im just looking to avoid deleting the setup i got, and maybe just delete a few "copy" backups so that theres not 8 gigs / 1 years worth of backups.i only need about 4 months I forgot about it.cuz i never neaded it. I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.
What are the steps needed to access one of my partitions, delete it, then use 1/2 the space and apply to system drive and the other 1/2 to another partition?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a new computer.It appears to have been partitioned into a NTFS format and FAT32 format.The default drive for my documents & my pictures etc is the NTFS which I have been using happily. It is Media Centre Edition so I also have a few large files (>4GB) - though I dont keep them long term.NTFS partition has fulled up - but I cant move my large files to other partition to free up space
I've done a little bit of reading but my question is "Should I reformat the FAT32 to make it more of use to me?".I cant really see the need arising to access older OS files, except .JPG's (photo's I had on my old Windows ME Comp) or "Should I move all my smaller files (documents and photo's) to the FAT32 partition and use the NTFS drive for the bigger files?"

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy existing C: drive. First I was getting the "Error 983" error. Then I un-installed SP2 which was causing a gang of problems, freezing programs for a couple mins mostly. After I got it uninstalled I did a disk defrag, then a chkdsk /f. Now I have partitioned the drive using PM8 again and this time after the reboot it is telling me it is completed but once Windows XP reboots there is no new partition.
Im trying to install Suse Linux 9.0. But I really want to have 2 new partitions, one for Suse, and the other as a back up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had perfectly working PC with XP Pro installed on a 160Gb Maxtor HDD.For no reason I error checked the hard drive, which the system did after rebooting, at the end of the test the system rebooted and announced that there was a error on the boot and boot.ini.Useing XP Emergency (on disk) I tried fixmbr which did nothing then I tried Fixboot. XP found the drive identified it as FAT and said that it was successfully fixed.The drive was FAT and is now unusable.Partition Magic sees it as a FAT drive as does XP when I switched the HDD into another machine.

My Win Xp Pro MCE 2004 has become a little buggy (MY FAULT).How would I copy or clone the smaller HD over to my 80GB drive AND maintain the larger partitions? The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility
View 3 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled my OS several months ago, and decided that I might want a dual boot in the future. I already had an old, smaller drive in the machine that's labeled the c: drive.
Reading one time that for security purposes it's good to have your OS on a drive other than C:, I decided to not alter the drive lettering.
I then partitioned a new internal hard drive into several logical drives. I formatted the D: partition as a Dos fat32 partition and the rest as NFTS partitions. Somehow, I allowed the D: partition to be the primary partition, while the E: partition which contains the Win 2000 Pro OS Winnt directory is a logical drive.
When I just checked disk management, I noticed that not only is boot.ini on the D: Dos partition, but so is ntldr along with the following Dos setup files:
ndetect.com
arcsetup.exe
arcldr.exe
I'm running Xp Pro SP2 & I need to redo the system. I have 2 Samsung 80gb hard drives but only one is currently in use.
What would be the best way to set them up for system speed, reliability & ease of back ups?

To reformat my computer now and i downloaded all the files i'd need to reformat and compressed them into a single rar file to put onto my d drive.
Although when i go to move theses filesonto my d drive i get a message saying: cannot copy "reformatfiles": There is not enough free disk space
