I have a friend using a dell laptop, which she carries from home to office. She has a Compaq printer at the office, connected via usb.Every time she plugs in the usb cable for the printer, her laptop installs another instance of the same printer. Annoying as heck -checked once and she had a dozen or so of the same printer.Any ideas how to get rid of this? I think she said that it only happens if the laptop is on and then she plugs in the printer. If she remembers to hook up the usb cable before booting the laptop,
My fax printer driver must have become corrupted because the console said there was no printer driver installed. I went to Add Windows Components, added Fax again and nothing happened. Went to Printers/Add Printer and let the wizard add a fax driver and it came up with a Microsoft Office Document Image Driver on LPT1. Fax Console still complains there is no fax driver, so I'm assuming that's the wrong printer driver.I'd like to force the install of a printer driver but I don't know what port it's supposed to be on and where to go to look for the driver.
Host PC is XP Pro - I can remote in OK the problem is more printer related. I have printers shared on the remote options as well.At home the client has a PSC 2650 HP printer connected. When remotely connected the printer does not show. More than likely on a DOT4 prot.I have the home PC printer pooled to LPT2 and the DOT4 port. On the remote (HOST) pc, I have installed the printer driver, but with no printer actually connected I can't get the printer to show in printers.
I have G speedbooster router and setup MAC address and WPA with password. My laptop can access fine. I have emachines t2882 with xp and USB wireless g speedbooster adapter. I can access internet when plugging in computer lan to lan on router. When using wireless usb, I key in code and says I am connected and green lights show, but when pulling up explorer, it says no connected? Device manager shows device is working properly.I tried setting up automatically assign IP's on the computer and got same result, and put in specific IP I have assigned from the router to this computer with same results as well.Again, looks like I am connected, but explorer does not seem to recognize I am connected.
I uses a laptop as a workstation. i uses it to get online from here at the school and at home. Recently, i can surf fine from work but when gets home when i plugs into network and gets all the signs of connectivity but when using the internet explorer, i only gets the "Work Offline" option and is unable to use the internet. I have a wireless connection set up as well as the regular ethernet connection. I usually only uses the ethernet port and rarely uses the wireless connection but both are running simultaneously.
Why does "Domains," with urls of sites I never visited and do not want contained in my Registry, repeatedly reappear after I have deleted the "Domains" key? Deleting the key has not affected my computers operation nor my browsing. But the key reinstalls itself!
the dial up worked fine until i took my computer to the high speed net at work. when i got the computer back i hooked it back up and dialed up it connected then i tried to view my webpage. it said page cant be displayed. my downloader was disconnected to. i had all the signs i was not connected to the internet but i was.
in the last month I've had to reinstall xp because my pc would stop booting and give the error message "windows cannot start due to missing or corrupt system file confid.sys." I've done fdisk 4 times before being told I should Format so the last time I had to reinstall I formatted. I have 2 problems righ tnow. First, in my craziness I had xp install twice today and have 2 versions on NTSF so I don't know if I can uninstall as it doesn't allow thru Add/remove Programs...Second problem. I'm told by some techs at work that I must have a virus in my mbr. I used the command fixnbr without really having more of a prayer than knowledge. I run antivurus multiple times a day because of my probs. What prg do I need to find a problem in my MBR? This pc is less than 5 months old and Dell is not very helpful on the phone.
This problem is now resolved: here is the fix that worked for me in case anyone else can use it. I tried a fix I found by Googling, applied it, and it did not work. This morning I called the Microsoft toll free number for Security issues (on their web site reached.Go into add remove programs and uninstall the msxml update kb945530. Close and go to windows update (start, all programs, near top of list). Click on express update: the update should now show on the list. Reinstall the update, then restart your computer. This worked for me and I hope it helps someone else who has the problem.
In the printer and faxes window there are printer icons listed in addition to my default HP Printer. Whiy are they listed there and what do they do since you can't use them...or can you and if so, how? Two that are listed on my computer are:
I bought a new HP printer today. I had a hotfix installed at some point that shutdown and woke up my printer at shutdown and startup. The new printer isn't affected by this hotfix. Does anyone know where I can get this patch?
Two custom PCs with XP Pro at same SP level. PC1 sees printer through switch. PC2 can not see printer. PC2 connects and sees printer when I cable the USB DIRECTLY to the printer instead of going thru a switch. Therefore, I know PC2 can print. Have tried 2 different switches. An A/B data switch and Belkin's 4x1 USB Peripheral Switch F1U401. PC1 works with both switches but PC2 does not.
We've had to change our address space and therefore the printer address has changed. I've changed the address on all but one computer. On this particular computer when I try to edit the TCP/IP port I get the message:
"An error occurred during port configuration. Access is denied."
If I try to create a new port I can select that I want it to be a Standard TCP/IP Port and then it tells me:
"Specified port cannot be added. Access is denied."
I have connected 3 new PC's on a P2P network, and connected a HP 4610 Color Laser Printer via a JetDirect 175 print server. On one PC, I can only print from the Administrator account. The other 2 computers work fine. On the one that is having issues, when printing a test page I receive a "Failed to Print" error mesage, and looking in the printer jobs menu, it shows that there was an error printing. The Administrator account can print fine from this machine.
The user accounts are "restricted user" accounts on all 3 computers. All 3 computers are exactly the same type, and all have the latest updates.
After a system crash all printers are gone and when trying to add a printer I get the message: "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running" After starting the service manually and trying to add a printer I get the message:"Operation could not be completed" and the service is stopped again.I looked at some of the previous answers and related topics (like article nine, and Q324757
I'm running Windows XP SP3 with everything up to date as far as I know. I have the complete set of my PC's OEM Disks that I've used once when my OS was completely messed up, had Geeks Rescue out and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I know what they are for. What I'm not understanding are the several tools I'm afraid to open listed in my "Start"/"All Programs" I have both "Compaq"/"Compaq Presario PC Tools" with "Compaq Application Recovery"/"Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator"/"Compaq Recovery Tools CD"/"Compaq Support Information"/"Compaq System Recovery"/"Remote Assistance"/"Safety and Comfort Guide"
I'm a tech at a college and am working on this computer that the printer spooler service won't stay started. You start up the machine and go to printers and faxes. There are none listed (of course cause the spooler isn't running) You click on add printer and it tells you that the service isn't running. So you go to run services.msc, printer spooler says it's stopped so you start it. It will then run until you try to print something or go to printers and faxes in the control panel. Basically as soon as you open the window the printer spooler service stops.Does anyone know a fix for this. Last time it happened one of my co-workers found a tool to fix it but we haven't been able to find it since and all the researching I have done leads me nowhere
I have a web cam in my house and a web cam in my mother's house. We both use Windows Xp,is there any way we can see each other and stay connected through web cam? Is there any free product we can use?
I am using Windows XP Home on my laptop and XP Pro on my desktop, both connected by a lan. When I connect to my ISP, and the 'Connected' Icon appears, (using either PC's modem) The connected PC hangs or freezes for up to 13 minutes. I can move the mouse pointer around, but no clicks of either mouse or keyboard appear to have any effect, not even CTRL+ALT+DELETE.After some time the programs I have been clicking on do appear and the problem seems to have gone, until next time I restart the PC and connect via modem. This is only when using modem connections. I have no problem with broadband, and it makes no difference whether or not I am connected to LAN. I am using Norton Antivirus, my definitions are up to date. I have also connected to 2 Internet sites who scanned my machines for viruses but did not find any. Any ideas? Obviously the problem does not seem serious but it is very annoying to have to wait 10 or more minutes every time I connect, before I can go anywhere, wouldn't be so bad if I could play a game while waiting, but as I say, nothing works during this time.I had posted a similar thread on the Internet and e-mail section, but at that time I thought it was just the Browser and client would not start. I have since noticed that it is everything.
My friend has a VPR Matrix Desktop (2.6 Ghz, 512 megs Ram) with Home Edition that would not power up. I replaced the power supply and it powered up fine. It booted up and worked fine until I started trying to remove spyware. My friend said it would just reboot for no reason. It'd die, reboot, die, reboot constantly. I think this may have burned up the power supply - it probably did this while he wasn't around (maybe during the night).... anyways that doesn't matter.
I was able to get into safe mode and thought I had the issue diagnosed. I wasn't able to work on it for a week or so and when I booted it back up, it worked fine. I backed up all of his important files and then started working on cleaning it up some (it's slow, I don't know if it's the lack of ram or spyware). When I reconnected it to my dsl, it worked fine for a minute, it was a little slow connecting to the net but then I recieved a "Error, run dll as an app" message. It continued to run for a few minutes afterwards then it started crash/rebooting like it had earlier................
I have this problem at my work computer, on that one we run Windows XP. Verizon DSL for the last 2 days I have not been able to stay connected to the internet for more than 5 or 6 minutes. then I hafto reboot ran the virus thing the adware thing and the spyware thing but no improvement contacted Verizon to check my line but they said everything looked ok
XP Pro, SP2, Pen4, Cable connection. Windows firewall, Norton antivirus.Over the past few weeks I've noticed that it's become almost impossible to get connected to this CNET forum. The same is true of the the sub text articles that offer more in depth information. For example, I received the article on the new Adobe Reader but couldn't open up the "read more" link. At first, I thought it was my ISP but then I realized that I had no problem connecting to any other links on the Net, just the CNET links. Then I started asking around and other people said they were experiencing the same thing with CNET links. Is this a problem CNET is already aware of. Most of the time my computer Times Out trying to open the CNET links. For some of us at least, this has developed into a real problem.
I have had an issue just crop up on my dell dimension 4550 running xp pro, 2.53 p4 with 1 gig of ram. Seems that everything is fine until I connect to a web page. I can start IE, and everything is fine, utilization is 0-20%, but once I type in a url and hit go, cpu goes to 100%, eventually the web page loads after a few minutes or more(on dial up, 56k) where this only took seconds in the past. Have current virus defintions, running ms antispyware also current. If I finally disconnect from the internet, and close IE, cpu utilization goes back down. I gave up and restored from a ghost image from a month ago back when i know it was working, and it still is doing the same thing and it has me stumped. I was thinking maybe its having hard drive issues, but it works fine unless I connect to the internet. Also, I can simply bring up IE and it works fine, no pegged CPU, but as soon as I connect to my isp and try to load a web page, cpu goes to 100% and does not recover. Looking at task mngr, ieexplorer and explorer.exe are really the only things that are taking all the cpu time.
I want to be able to make my pci internal modem (com3) dial a phone number and remain connected when i close the dos window then open a program that will talk directly to com3.Closest i can come is "echo atdt >com3" When i tried "echo adt0,12345 > com3" still no dial tone or off hook operation just a click.
My Old computer is not connected to the internet and is running XP home with NO Service packs. I want to install SP2 but I cannot use windows update because it is not connected to the internet. I have installed a uxtheme patch so would that make problems when upgrading? Somewhere there must be a file that I can download, burn to CD or thumb drive, transfer and Install.I have found this but it says it is a Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers,
I have windows installed in my desktop. I have heard that there is a way to find out if other people has logged on to your computer in your absence by checking the log. Can anyone tell me how this is done. I am the administrator and my account is passwrord protected but it is known to two more people. my computer is not connected to LAN. , how you check the log?
