Close All Programs Before Installation - What Means
Sep 26, 2005
When installing new software you are often instructed to close all running windows programs before installation. Does this mean programs you might be using and are still open such as Quicken, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Printshop etc; or does it mean programs that are running in the background such as an antivirus program, screensaver, taskmanager etc.

The other day i tried to install a game. When I tried to open it, it told me it couldn't find d3d9.dll. When I put d3d9.dll into the right folder, it said: The procedure entry point DdEntry12 could not be located in the dynamic link library DDRAW.dll. So I thought it was a problem with the game. When I installed another game, the same thing happened. After some internet research, I found that this was a DirectX problem and that what I needed to do was update it. So I downloaded the new version and installed it but the same thing happened. Later, I downloaded an app that required Flash Player. It told me I had version 6 when I needed at least version 9. So I went to Adobe's website and downloaded and installed Flash Player 10.
But when I tried to open the app, it still said i had version 6! So I started to realize that the computer didn't recognize updates to software. So, I told myself, maybe if I update Windows, it'll work. So, I went to the Windows Update and it told me KB888162 (I think that's the one) was a critical update. So I clicked on Install and then, a window popped up telling me that Explorer.exe had encountered a problem and needed to close. This happened every time I try to update and even sometimes when I open Control Panel. (I have Windows XP, by the way).

my home network might have a virus, programs start up and suddenly close/disappear. On one of the computers an error comes up and says that windows is shutting down(lass.exe file), then it shuts down and reboots. My anti-virus software can't detect nothing. I downloaded the sasser fix and it doesn't detect anything.

Using Windows XP Pro SP2. As I'm the only user on a standalone PC, I didn't use to bother with a password and Windows would log me in
automatically.
Then I found I had to have a password in order to get Task Scheduler to work, so I set one, then used UserPasswords2 to again set my account to log in automatically.
This works fine except that I cannot now find a way to access the built-in Administrator account.
Before I used UserPasswords2, I could get to the Admin account by starting in Safe Mode (the trick of pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice I've
seen here never worked for me, apparently because Windows thinks I am part of a workgroup rather than a domain). This worked whether I had a password set on my own account or not.
Now, however, I get automatically logged in even in Safe Mode, with no chance to choose the Admin account.
IS there any way of doing this so that I can keep auto login, keep Task Scheduler happy and still get to the Admin account if I need to?

I have been handed a PC to "sort out". It`s OS is XP Home. The problem being, that when it is switched on, it brings up the following screen We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. Start in safe mode.Safe mode with networking.Safe mode with command prompt.Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked). Start Windows normally. But whichever option you select, the computer simply reboots and brings up the above screen again.

I've lately had some problems with my win-xp (home) following installation/ un-installation of daemon tools that corrupted some registry files. After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I downloaded the installer from the MS Download center (it didn't appear in Windows Update). Is it safe to turn off the computer (since I can't close the installer), or should I let it sit for a while longer (it's been hanging for a few hours)?

I have been having problems with my screen freezing (first the screensaver froze - I turned it off, then the cursor froze - requires reset, every few hours). The last time this happened I also got a message saying "Dr Watson postmortem debugger has encountered an error and needs to close". Where do I start looking to solve this? Ive run Memtest - all clear (both channels, both modules). I did have an intermittent "Computer wont start" problem that I traced to an ill-fitting long plug on the motherboard - re-seated. A while back I installed Hijack This to problem solve something else but have since forgotten how to use it . I assume my system is producing logs of all this, but where do I look for them?
