When installing new software you are often instructed to close all running windows programs before installation. Does this mean programs you might be using and are still open such as Quicken, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Printshop etc; or does it mean programs that are running in the background such as an antivirus program, screensaver, taskmanager etc.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know when or what could have caused the bright yellow star folder icon for the Favorites that links to IE but now I see I have a plain old regular folder icon. It's never been moved out of the original spot which is C:/Documents and Settings/user/Favorites. This does not make the folder unusable as IE still saves and gets shortcuts from it. I'm wondering if any of you out there have ever ran into this or any ideas of getting getting the original star icon back. This is on a WINXP Pro system with all the latest Microsoft updates.

Using Windows XP Pro SP2. As I'm the only user on a standalone PC, I didn't use to bother with a password and Windows would log me in
automatically.
Then I found I had to have a password in order to get Task Scheduler to work, so I set one, then used UserPasswords2 to again set my account to log in automatically.
This works fine except that I cannot now find a way to access the built-in Administrator account.
Before I used UserPasswords2, I could get to the Admin account by starting in Safe Mode (the trick of pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice I've
seen here never worked for me, apparently because Windows thinks I am part of a workgroup rather than a domain). This worked whether I had a password set on my own account or not.
Now, however, I get automatically logged in even in Safe Mode, with no chance to choose the Admin account.
IS there any way of doing this so that I can keep auto login, keep Task Scheduler happy and still get to the Admin account if I need to?
Apparently I purchased a counterfeit version of Windows XP Pro. Recently I allowed my system to be updated as I have have many times in the past. This time I was asked to accept a user agreement. I did not read the user agreement in details but I think it did mention something about this counterfeit check. Now I have a star that appears on my desktop and is constantly bothering me with a pop-up balloon that states "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting". I would graciously pay the amount they want for a valid license which is $ 149 but the problem is I read on their "win xp boards" that in most cases you end up having to reload their acceptable version of Windows XP. We don't have the time to start from scratch. In my opinion, Microsoft needs to do a better job policing who is a valid dealer and who is not.

It`s OS is XP Home. The problem being, that when it is switched on, it brings up the following screen We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. Start in safe mode.Safe mode with networking.Safe mode with command prompt.Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked). Start Windows normally. But whichever option you select, the computer simply reboots and brings up the above screen again.
