Checking The Time For Which System Has Been Worked?
Dec 27, 2007
I just wanted to know if there is anyway I can find out how long a computer has been on for in total. I tried the systeminfo comand in CMD and that dosnt work. What I really need is the entire time kinda like the KM on a car, so I just wanted to know if there is anyway to find that out.
I just built a new system hooked everything up and tried to run windows disk when it get to checking system configuration it sits there and then goes black what could be causing this? system specs pc chips m811 board anthlon xp 2400 512mb kingston pc2100 ram asus v9400nvidia geforce mx 4000 64mb samsung 40g hd godegen case 350w codegen power supply.
In the last couple of weeksI have been getting the following message: "Please wait while checking system configuration" - in a pale blue box at startup. It sits on the top of all programs and will not turn off, even after a couple of hours, The rest of the operations work ok.
I have read an old thread on this in the forum, but it was never answered to my satisfaction, so I am asking again.
I am buying a new business computer to use SAGE and Photoshop CS4. The man in PC World said he didn't think SAGE would work with Windows 7 so recommended i buy a HP with XP built in for 580 with 22" monitor. The alternative is Acer Aspire x1301 and get a graphics card for it... Which should i go for to avoid problems with my programs working??
So after attempting and repair-install (xp pro sp2) I ended up having to RE-install and was able to recover ALL of my data (this was largely thanks to the helpful people here, and their friendly advice) but that's also kind of the problem too. I now have a dozen versions of Owner, Guest, etc. My programs and downloads are all over the place and are missing pieces necessary for functioning. Thousands of empty files (that I'm reticent to delete because of their possible value/necessity) and paths that lead to nowhere. What I want to know is: Is there a way to consolidate/trim down the registry (this is the area that I'm least familiar with), to eliminate some of these loose/dead-ends & file paths? Also, I am the ONLY user on this machine. What (if anything) can be done to trim away some/any of the fat? For you see, I have gigs of it.
i do scans quite a bit and delete alot of things everytime. there is the msn spyware thing that keeps coming back after i delete that, as well as many other things i dont even know about. some of my devices just shut them selves down from time to time (mouse, scanner/printer, and otherthings i cant remember but the key board is fine) and after a few seconds turn back on. and the whole thing just crashes sometimes. i did that scan thing but im not sure if i did it right.

i installed an usb device, and all the drivers for it,it worked for two days, it was recognized. Now it will not recognize the device.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device drivers, all the software that used the device. and even tried to install the driver by locating with 'have disk' browse. i have tried all the directories that the drivers were installed to, and then some. and also the install disk. Device manager says that its an unknown device, and theres no problem with it. but will not update to the proper drivers. How can i alleviate this problem short of reformatting my computer.
it would not do anything whilst on the windows loading screen (progress bar etc worked but it got stuck on that screen and wouldn't advance), the HDD light would blink for a while and then it would just sit there. Usually i would restart until quite a while later I discovered that if i left it for long enough (about 5-10 minutes) it would eventually load. I have also performed several reformats in this time and the problem would disappear for a while then show its ugly face again. It wouldn't do this every time but a large majority of the time it would.
Instead, it would go through the loading screen, finish that, and the screen would go blank (no signal detected etc) and then it wouldn't do anything at all, I have left it sitting there for about an hour once to see if eventually would work but it didn't. So to fix this I have to restart the computer and it would come up with the screen asking me if i want to use safe mode and usually i would either choose the Last known good configuration or start up windows normally, occasionally i would go in safe mode and restart from there and it would usually work but not always.
I slap one together then install windows without a hitch.then I toss in the mobo driver disk and the system hard locks can't even get to the task manager. A few disks and reboots later, the same stuff is happening.I check the device manager and not only is the drive not showing up as a problem, but it's recognizing it as the proper model. So then I go and set the region code (because I had an issue before with a drive not reading before I set a region).still same problem.Like I said above, I'm building 2 of the same systems.so I took the other drive and plopped it in. SAME FRIKEN THING.I'm kind of stuck because I can't update stuff without the cd rom drive (I guess I could use a small usb thumbdrive)and the drivers on that disk enable the onboard lan, so I can't even check windows update.so I use my thumbdrive and install the latest forceware, including the ide drivers.
I was connected to a domain (work - was an office computer no longer used and sold to me) .. and removed that and when I restarted the computer for it to take effect and when the system came back on my user name and password no longer worked for me to sign into windows. Prior to removing the domain .. user name and password worked fine.
I have a compaq armada 1500c laptop running win 2000. My computer was running fine on the battery, when it started to run down I plugged in my power cord, the computer turned off now it will not run at all on the battery, but it seems to charge the bat.
About a month ago my DVD/CD-RW Drive D would not open after a while if you pushed the button twice it will open.now my DVD-RW drive C won't open at all and there is a CD in it I run windows XP Pro
"Open With" dialog box with IE.When I click in my short-cut icon(s) on the desktop to launch my web site(s) I get the dialog box which reads "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". When I then select Internet Explorer and tick the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and click OK I get to my destination. But when I repeat the process of clicking the icon(s) for my site(s) I go through the same process again and again. It all happened when trying out Safari browser now uninstalled. The icon clicking worked properly with Safari but would not go back to working OK with IE.
I am trying to use the system restore function on windows XP, but every time i select a restore point and the system reboots, it says that the restoration was incomplete and "no changes have been made." I have tried multiple restore points. Microsoft.com suggested that i verify that the task manager, WMI, and system restore services were running, and they are. I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens.
In device manager under system devices, I have an hardware unkown not installed. In system information/ problem devices/ it is reporting ACPI driver not installed. Could this be causing my BSOD's?
I'm just checking up on problems, so is there anything here that can be fixed?

1) Built a new computer in Oct/Nov 2006. Had been "out of the loop" in terms of computer know how, as the computer I was using at the time was going on about 6 or 7 years old. Originally I had a problem and couldn't get the computer to POST or start up, but it was because I purchased Brand X memory that wasn't "compatible" or recommended with the MOBO (never heard of a situation like this before. Always though Ram was Ram was Ram... learned my lesson.)
2) Computer runs like a dream for about 7 months. It is now around late May/June 2007. I turn the computer on and sit down on the chair and start to get comfortable. To my horror the computer enters this strange "safe mode" blue colored screen and is running some sort of check. It goes by real quick and I don't have time to read it. The computer goes past it and does not load and begins a reboot cycle.
3) Fastfoward a month and three or four full formats of the Hdd and reloads of WinXP. After each load the computer would work for a random amount of time then the same problem would occur. Repairing WinXP did nothing. Eventually I went to format the Hdd again and I started getting messages saying the formatting could not complete and the hdd could not be accessed. Figured it was a bad hdd, got it RMA'd and in the mean time purchased another one.
4) July 2007. Load new hdd into case, load WinXP. Computer runs like a dream. I love it. Runs Bf2142 flawlessly with all graphics on high... blah blah whatever the kids say these days to brag about how fast their computers are.
5) August 21st, 2007 around 11:30pm. I get home from my night shift job. Plop down and fire up the computer. The past three or four times I've started up the computer it has loaded.... "oddly". Basically the Windows load screen (blue scrolly bar, is that the technical term for it? ) would come up and then a blank screen would be up for an extended period of time (30, 40 seconds maybe? Long enough to notice. Short enough that if thats all thats going to happen I can live with it). But this time no... I get that blue "Safe Mode" looking screen. This time its slower and I can write down whats on it. Here is what it said:
Description: A dark blue banner with a safe mode looking WinXP logo with the the Windows Logo (you know, the actual WINDOW) all in the color white. Below this banner area some text:
Checking Filesystem on C:
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)
- File Verification (1 or 3) - Index Verification (2 of 3) - Security Verification (3 of 3)
and then when those three were complete it spewed a bunch of text real quick and the screen flashed (so I could not only A read it or B even look at it really), the computer reboots and loads, albeit with that slow, lagged black screen between Blue Scrolly and Desktop.
Obviously there must be a deeper problem with the computer if this is happening again with a second, completely unique hdd. There is no way I am getting two "bad" hdd... i mean, I've never really even gotten one before ever. Does anyone have any possible insight as to what could be going on here? Please help

my computer was running slow so I thought that if I ran the error-check and automatically fix options I might work better. I checked both boxes and clicked start and it said that id would check and fix the errors the next time I'd restart my computer. Now everytime I turn on my computer it aks me which OS I wanna run (Windows xp home or windows xp home (bootscreen)). I want this to stop, as it really annoys me to wait some extra time every time I turn my computer on, I already tried to uncheck the boxes (Local drive C: Tools) but they were already unchecked. The OS question continues to occur whenever I restart or turn the computer on. How do I fix this?
I am trying to get BitPim to work, for those of you who don't know it is an application that will give you access to your cell phone so you can create your own ringtones and what not.
The problem is that it keeps telling me that the COM port is not available.
Is there a way for me to run any report that will tell me what applications are using what COM ports, or how to make a COM port available. any suggestion?
Is there a way in XP, or in BIOS on a computer running XP, to check the actual FSB speed? Is it indicated in BIOS? I have a vague memory of checking it once but I can't remember if I checked it on the machine or just read the number in the manual.
If BIOS, or another source on the machine, tells you an FSB speed, is that the actual current clocked speed, or is that some kind of factory standard number that the MoBo provides as a spec?
I'm having some confusion as to what my actual FSB speed is. The manual says it's 400 on some Dimension 2400 machines but 266 on mine, but I swear I read XP or BIOS telling me it was 400. If there's a way to check directly I'd like to do that.
i have new laptop and it has Windows XP installed, I'd like to check the processor size, hard drive size, memory and other components to make sure I've got what I've paid for.
I've always used Windows 98SE in the past so could some kind person talk me through the procedure for XP.
It would also help if you could advise the main changes to watch out for using XP.
I recently downloaded a trial version of Dreamweaver; a 30-day trial. I worked on it a little, then left it alone for a couple of days. Now, when i try to find it, I can't. Searches turn up file folders of several types, but nothing that will allow me to run the program.
Where is it???!!! Why won't a search turn up something...an .EXE file or whatever, that will allow me to access the program. It's hiding somewhere and I can't figure out how to find it. it's far from the thirty days...maybe 10, if that.
Trying to download it again from the site doesn't work; they say that my email is already in use, so they are preventing me from downloading it again. I know I can try to contact them next week, but does anybody have a clue on this?
When I start my computer it goes to a screen saying "checking file system FAT32" and then proceeds to check disks and says "one of your disks needs to be checked for consitency" then it runs through the process to 100% and is up an running after that. My question is why is it suddenly doing that and does that signify a problem? Do you need a HJT log of my system? Thanks!
I have a used copy of XP upgrade and would like to know if it is being used before installing it. Is there a MS site one can go to and put in product key to see if it is already in use?
I'm trying to do a full disk check in my XP machine, so I went to the "Local Disk (C Properties"->Tools-"Error-checking" and clicked "Check Now." Then I marked "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors," and then it gives me the message that it has to wait until the next restart before it'll work.
One of my computers has an error message that comes up that tells me that a problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer Now my desktop icons do not appear on the screen and I cannot use the computer.I think it has something to do with a virus but I'm not sure. What can I do? I've tried using my Windows Home Edition CD to reformat but it appears that the computer is not reading the CD so I can't do a reformat. It allows me to go into safe mode but I can't get access to any of my files and I can't do a system restore while in safe mode.
Is it ok to keep my laptop on all the time? Am constantly downloading stuff so i leave it day and night on. I just thought that maybe it requires some hours off too. I don't want to burn it or laptops are capable to be operational all the time?
