I have a used copy of XP upgrade and would like to know if it is being used before installing it. Is there a MS site one can go to and put in product key to see if it is already in use?

My friend said to me that the installer got stuck at 'Checking product key'. He was coming over anyway so I said to him to bring his laptop and I'll hook it up to the DSL and download all updates. It did about 65 updates and then wanted to so service pack 2. It downloaded it from Windows Update but still gets stuck on Checking Product key (been on it for 30 minutes now with no change)
I just built a new system hooked everything up and tried to run windows disk when it get to checking system configuration it sits there and then goes black what could be causing this? system specs pc chips m811 board anthlon xp 2400 512mb kingston pc2100 ram asus v9400nvidia geforce mx 4000 64mb samsung 40g hd godegen case 350w codegen power supply.
When I want to install Windows XP from cd it says "Checking hardware configuration" and then it goes blank. Computer keeps on running, just nothing on the screen. No versions work, with/without sp1/sp2. I tried upgrading, tried bootdisks, nothing helped. I reflashed bios, doesn't help. And the weird this is it is only on Windows XP, Win2K pro installs just fine and so does Gentoo and Slackware.I believe the problems started to occur when I put in 2 new disks, 2x200gb Maxtor Diamond Max 10 (S-ata). I don't think they are the problem.
Getting right to it I have a Dell Dimension 4300 that I am fixing up for my daughter adding memory and a larger hard drive. It has Win Xp home installed on it and I have gotten the CD Key # off of it using an extractor. Now my question is because I do not have the upgrade CD (which came with it) for reinstalling it can I use my other (legal) XP upgrade cd to reistall it, using the Key # retrieved from the Dell to verify it with MS for upgrades/downloads, etc. or will I have to use the CD key # which came with my disc.
I have to reinstall my XP Pro OS on my work PC. The XP CD for that is fairly old and only has SP1. I recently got a laptop with XP Pro SP2. Can I Install the OS using the laptop XP CD that has SP2 and type in the product Key for the older XP machine so I don't have to spend hours updating the SP1 install to SP2. I've done this with MS Office in the past when the silver coating on the CD got scraped off and I just installed with an Office CD from another machine and used the Product Key from the broken CD license. These are DELL machines if that makes any difference. The last time I reinstalled the laptop OS using the CD, I can't remember typing in the product key and I don't want to have any issues with licensing and activation.
I installed previous version of the product..now i am installing the updated version of this product...so installation of updated version removes the previous version. If i want to install this previous version during the uninstallation of the updated version how can i do this?
I have a strange anomoly when reinstalling XP. After the installation reboots into device configuration and I "ok" the keyboard config, the product key entry page comes up and locks the system. I am befuddled. I have tried booting into safe-mode (can't boot into safe-mode during setup), restarting the installation, running repair on the installation and chkdsk /r. I was able to install a second image to a new system directory. I would rather not rebuild my entire configuration via the second image. Anyone have an idea why the original installation is freezing as indicated?
can one cancel a xp upgrade install (over w98se) directly after entering the product key without damaging the current w98 configuration? in other words, can the install process be stopped harmlessly before performing the Dynamic Update which you have a yes/no option? the pc uses a shared wireless net connection and in order to perform Dynamic Update you must have an active Internet connection. if for some reason the pc was to lose its connection would xp not see it and begin automatically installing xp without being able to halt it.
I'm trying to use a slip-streamed copy of win xp pro to install xp home onto a new hard drive for a friend while using his xp home product key. I thought that xp home would extract the files unique to xp home from the xp pro install because I used the xp home product key. The reason I'm using the xp pro slip-stream is because my friend bought the computer with xp home pre-installed and didn't get a install copy on the o.s.
I have been told that instead of having to buy another retail version of an operating system as long as I have the install disk all I have to do is get a product key through Microsoft for like 50 bucks. How Do I go at doing this I am looking at getting a product key for Windows Xp Pro 32bit.
I just purchased a Win XP Pro OS from a local PC retail store and I installed it on my machine.Everything went by plan. After everything was done.I restart my computer and in the middle of the boot-up I get this message.Setup failed to install the product catalog (Fatal error). And another try to boot it up I get message Error Signature for WinXP Pro is invalid. The third time I get the first message again.I ran the setup disk again maybe I did something wrong No same thin again.Any cure for that?Any repairs possible? Any download from microsoft to solve the problem?
i have been using my OEM version of XP home for the past few years, have reformatted my HD a few times and used the cd to reinstall it without trouble yesterday i decided my computer needed another reformat, so i did so assuming that the installation would work. now every time i enter in the cd key (the CORRECT one that comes with my LEGIT version of xp home), it says my product key is invalid.
AFTER APRIL 11TH, WILL YOU BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT UPDATES FOR MICROSOFT PRODUCTS FOR XP?) Let's say for example that it is now April 12th, and a security patch is released for OE 6. Could we just do the following: 1) Go to www.microsoft.com 2.) Individually select the product to update or patch to install (I.E my hypothetical OE 6 question) than download and install the patch? IS EVERYONE RUNNING XP GOING TO BE PROMPTED WITH SOME MESSAGE SAYING: "ATTENTION: SP-2 IS REQUIRED FOR ALL XP UPDATES." OR, DOES THIS SP-2 MANDATORY APPLY ONLY TO RUNNING WINDOWS UPDATE OR AUTOMATIC UPDATE, meaning that we can still download individual product enhancments by going to www.microsoft.com and selecting by product or service?
I keep getting this cc common msi tryin to install a blank product name when i start norton system works and its components, I had a trojan and cleaned it with ewido and true sword but i cant get rid of this installer, ran hijack but didn't see anything suspicion. Have run spybot and my AV programs didnt find anything malicious.
Windows Update doesn't download from MS anymore. When I try to manually update my comp opens a new browser, goes to Micorsoft Windows Update. In the browser it sez:"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click Install or Yes to install the software."But nothing happens. On the left side of the window, the Install Updates, View Installation History, & Restore Hidden updates is greyed out.
I couldnt install the service pack 2 because the installation says my product keys are unvalid and it gave a website to find the solution to my problem. But I couldn't find anything that fits my situation from this website... It's www.howtotell.com. I have the valid product keys now but couldnt find a way how to reenter it. Is there anything to do beside reinstall WinXP? I have another CD with valid product key.
My son moved out of town and now wants his copy of Windows XP Pro that he left behind. I have two copies that are idententical except for the product keys. Is there somewhere in Windows that would tell me which copy to send and which to keep? will he be able to reuse this disk to put on a new HD in a new computer? Can he put his old HD in a new computer?
there is a GENUINE XP PROFESSIONAL CD with it's case. But neither the case nor the CD has the product key on it. So I am not able to install it on my new HD. Is there any way to install this XP PROFESSIONAL without the product key or get the product key somehow?
In device manager under system devices, I have an hardware unkown not installed. In system information/ problem devices/ it is reporting ACPI driver not installed. Could this be causing my BSOD's?
I'm just checking up on problems, so is there anything here that can be fixed?

1) Built a new computer in Oct/Nov 2006. Had been "out of the loop" in terms of computer know how, as the computer I was using at the time was going on about 6 or 7 years old. Originally I had a problem and couldn't get the computer to POST or start up, but it was because I purchased Brand X memory that wasn't "compatible" or recommended with the MOBO (never heard of a situation like this before. Always though Ram was Ram was Ram... learned my lesson.)
2) Computer runs like a dream for about 7 months. It is now around late May/June 2007. I turn the computer on and sit down on the chair and start to get comfortable. To my horror the computer enters this strange "safe mode" blue colored screen and is running some sort of check. It goes by real quick and I don't have time to read it. The computer goes past it and does not load and begins a reboot cycle.
3) Fastfoward a month and three or four full formats of the Hdd and reloads of WinXP. After each load the computer would work for a random amount of time then the same problem would occur. Repairing WinXP did nothing. Eventually I went to format the Hdd again and I started getting messages saying the formatting could not complete and the hdd could not be accessed. Figured it was a bad hdd, got it RMA'd and in the mean time purchased another one.
4) July 2007. Load new hdd into case, load WinXP. Computer runs like a dream. I love it. Runs Bf2142 flawlessly with all graphics on high... blah blah whatever the kids say these days to brag about how fast their computers are.
5) August 21st, 2007 around 11:30pm. I get home from my night shift job. Plop down and fire up the computer. The past three or four times I've started up the computer it has loaded.... "oddly". Basically the Windows load screen (blue scrolly bar, is that the technical term for it? ) would come up and then a blank screen would be up for an extended period of time (30, 40 seconds maybe? Long enough to notice. Short enough that if thats all thats going to happen I can live with it). But this time no... I get that blue "Safe Mode" looking screen. This time its slower and I can write down whats on it. Here is what it said:
Description: A dark blue banner with a safe mode looking WinXP logo with the the Windows Logo (you know, the actual WINDOW) all in the color white. Below this banner area some text:
Checking Filesystem on C:
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)
- File Verification (1 or 3) - Index Verification (2 of 3) - Security Verification (3 of 3)
and then when those three were complete it spewed a bunch of text real quick and the screen flashed (so I could not only A read it or B even look at it really), the computer reboots and loads, albeit with that slow, lagged black screen between Blue Scrolly and Desktop.
Obviously there must be a deeper problem with the computer if this is happening again with a second, completely unique hdd. There is no way I am getting two "bad" hdd... i mean, I've never really even gotten one before ever. Does anyone have any possible insight as to what could be going on here? Please help

my computer was running slow so I thought that if I ran the error-check and automatically fix options I might work better. I checked both boxes and clicked start and it said that id would check and fix the errors the next time I'd restart my computer. Now everytime I turn on my computer it aks me which OS I wanna run (Windows xp home or windows xp home (bootscreen)). I want this to stop, as it really annoys me to wait some extra time every time I turn my computer on, I already tried to uncheck the boxes (Local drive C: Tools) but they were already unchecked. The OS question continues to occur whenever I restart or turn the computer on. How do I fix this?
I am trying to get BitPim to work, for those of you who don't know it is an application that will give you access to your cell phone so you can create your own ringtones and what not.
The problem is that it keeps telling me that the COM port is not available.
Is there a way for me to run any report that will tell me what applications are using what COM ports, or how to make a COM port available. any suggestion?
Is there a way in XP, or in BIOS on a computer running XP, to check the actual FSB speed? Is it indicated in BIOS? I have a vague memory of checking it once but I can't remember if I checked it on the machine or just read the number in the manual.
If BIOS, or another source on the machine, tells you an FSB speed, is that the actual current clocked speed, or is that some kind of factory standard number that the MoBo provides as a spec?
I'm having some confusion as to what my actual FSB speed is. The manual says it's 400 on some Dimension 2400 machines but 266 on mine, but I swear I read XP or BIOS telling me it was 400. If there's a way to check directly I'd like to do that.
i have new laptop and it has Windows XP installed, I'd like to check the processor size, hard drive size, memory and other components to make sure I've got what I've paid for.
I've always used Windows 98SE in the past so could some kind person talk me through the procedure for XP.
It would also help if you could advise the main changes to watch out for using XP.
I recently downloaded a trial version of Dreamweaver; a 30-day trial. I worked on it a little, then left it alone for a couple of days. Now, when i try to find it, I can't. Searches turn up file folders of several types, but nothing that will allow me to run the program.
Where is it???!!! Why won't a search turn up something...an .EXE file or whatever, that will allow me to access the program. It's hiding somewhere and I can't figure out how to find it. it's far from the thirty days...maybe 10, if that.
Trying to download it again from the site doesn't work; they say that my email is already in use, so they are preventing me from downloading it again. I know I can try to contact them next week, but does anybody have a clue on this?
When I start my computer it goes to a screen saying "checking file system FAT32" and then proceeds to check disks and says "one of your disks needs to be checked for consitency" then it runs through the process to 100% and is up an running after that. My question is why is it suddenly doing that and does that signify a problem? Do you need a HJT log of my system? Thanks!
