Update Wont Work: Checking For Latest Versions But Wont Install?

Windows Update doesn't download from MS anymore. When I try to manually update my comp opens a new browser, goes to Micorsoft Windows Update. In the browser it sez:"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click Install or Yes to install the software."But nothing happens. On the left side of the window, the Install Updates, View Installation History, & Restore Hidden updates is greyed out.

After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer. Also, can anyone explain in English what this is suppose to do and if could cause any potential problems based on info provided below? (More system info in bio if needed) My computer and DSL connection speeds are so fast I cannot imagine I have a need for ''improved performance'' but I like to keep everything up to date. I just want to make sure this download won't interfere with with current McAfee services, music downlading from Napster, Rhapsody or whatever, or AOL or SBC/Yahoo DSL connections. This computer is not used for video gaming. Computer has plenty of free hard drive space. Intel P4 630 3.0 GHz; IE 6.0; AOL 9.0SE - I can currently be signed onto both Yahoo and AOL simultaneously.

My sister tells me that after receiving a Windows update about a week ago, Zone Alarm stopped allowing access to the Internet. She uninstalled it and went to ZA website. They told her to download a new version that would compensate for the Windows update. She did, but it slowed her computer quite a bit. She also says that it interrupts Outlook Express from time to time.

I posted the same question on MS newsgroup but since nobody replies to it and there are about 8 people with the same problem, I thought that I look somewhere else for answer. I'm in the middle of formatting a hard drive, doing the research while waiting. good thing I have another computer to use. I installed the latest MS Windows Update this afternoon (about 10 hours ago) and it renders my computer unusable. the computer won't boot, it just got stuck on the Windows XP screen where the blue bars go from left to right. after about 2-3 runs, it started to get very slow and the little blocks that make up the bars shows up very slowly like in slow motion. I don't (can't) remember the exact KB number, but I remember installing about 7-8 updates. the critical (required) ones are the malicious software removal thing, a patch for IE6, outlook express patch, ms word patch. then I add the root something update and an update for my network card. hen it told me to reboot the computer but the computer will not boot. I tried another hard drive that I haven't used since March, it performs the same "problem", the bars go for about 2-3 runs then it started to get very slow. then it just sits there, stuck, until I press the reset button. I'm currently formatting this hard drive and leaving the updated one untouched because I don't want to have to format that one. too much data and too many programs to reinstall (I want clean install and clean registry).

My machine has suddenly started giving me an error on start-up. The little red shield appears in the system tray and a warning saying that my Norton Anti-virus software is not working and I am not protected. However after a short while this disappears.I think it has something to do with the order the initial TSRs etc. are loaded during the boot-up process, as once the Norton icon appears in the system tray the red shield disappears. I wondered if there is any way I can change the order

I'm looking to free up space on my hard drive. Is it OK to uninstall old .NET versions, old java versions, and old windows updates? The old versions occupy tremendous space on my computer and if they can be safely removed I'll love to remove them. Is it safe to remove old versions of .NET framework, java consoles, and windows updates?

I m trying to install Service pack 2 onto my home PC. I used to have SP2 on my computer and it worked and installed perfectly but months ago I had to format and put on SP1. I have now decided that I want SP2 back on and having tried around 6 times with 2 different discs and with no avail. I am having the same problem every time; it will not finish the installation and will hang on the boot screen. It will install all the components but on boot it will hang and not finish. It has installed before on this same PC with no problems but not these times. I have tried an upgrade, a clean install; install driver and computer updates then trying both ways again. I have tried a quick and even a long format process but with the same problem every time. Could it be the hardware? I have made 3 changes since the last time of having SP2 on my PC and they are as follows:
-GeForce 5500 has now changed to GeForce 6600
-Added more RAM 256mb to 1GB
-Added a fan
I m not sure where to go from this, stuck with SP1 and unable to install the latest software I need for my college work.

When I want to install Windows XP from cd it says "Checking hardware configuration" and then it goes blank. Computer keeps on running, just nothing on the screen. No versions work, with/without sp1/sp2. I tried upgrading, tried bootdisks, nothing helped. I reflashed bios, doesn't help. And the weird this is it is only on Windows XP, Win2K pro installs just fine and so does Gentoo and Slackware.I believe the problems started to occur when I put in 2 new disks, 2x200gb Maxtor Diamond Max 10 (S-ata). I don't think they are the problem.

When i click the turn off computer button it is supposed to install an important security update. The update thing never goes away even though it looks like the update has been installad.

My OpticPro 9636T scanner parallel port scanner initially would not work under Windows XP Pro. Plustek does not support XP on this model. I finally found a driver from Germany. When installed with right mouse clicks, it installed in English, and worked perfectly. Since the MS automatic update to SP2, it no longer works, and the driver from Germany won't install.Does anyone know of a driver that will work?

I've been fighting with Microsoft update web site for about a week and a half now. All of the sudden when I go there to get updates, all I get is the option to click on Express or Custom. Then when it gets to the page where ya see the green balls moving across the page while its scanning my system to see if I need any updates, it just stays there and if I stay at that page too long, my PC locks up.
I'm running XP Pro with 500MHz and 256 in ram. I've tried to contact Microsoft tech guys that I can barley understand and they have no idea what's going on. It doesn't make any difference if its a fresh install of XP Pro with nothing else installed except for my wireless card so I can connect to the net, or the current system I'm running now.

my Help and Support doesn't work at all, but that's not important. Secondly, whenever I open Microsoft/Windows Update, it opens in Firefox, and shows everything (cause of IE Tab add-on), but it opens a blank IE windows as well... The URL works fine in both browsers. Also an error pops up whenever I open Gigaget (probably cause of Ad banner, but I've never seen it). Screenshot of error:
Lastly, and most importantly, it seems that the Explorer file manager on my Guest account is messed up. Whenever I open a folder, or any shortcuts that open by Explorer (ex. my Computer) Search pops up. Then if I search something, and it shows a folder (and probably anything else opened by Explorer), when I try to open it, this kind of thing happens: There might be other things that I may not have noticed, but I'm sure about these ones.

daughter has an "emachine" (I know, but it's too late) with XP. Son opened a "cheats" from Google and now they can't open internet explorer at all. Just gives us the "sorry, we'll send error report." They can right click on the "explorer" icon and open by "run as" but they can't download anything, or open new pages (assuming the other pages are stored). They play a game called Ragnarok(sp??) and that may have something to do with it, not sure. Anyway, I've checked internet connections and she is enabled, I've run Winsock and that doesn't help, even loaded Foxfire browser to bypass, but it won't open either, just gives me the same message. We even updated with the XP2, still nothing

I have recently updated (Auto)Windows XP. I have a Xerox laser printer on my network which after the update failed to work although it works from other computers (Mac) on the same network. I did a system restore and now it works, so the update is the fault. Before or if, I update again has anyone any advice on how to repair this situation. Auto Update is presently turned off).

Also, the Information bar does not appear, thus you're unable to re-install the Windows Update ActiveX control.install the ActiveX control required to view the website
Help and Support pages are incomplete.System Information utility (MSINFO32) displays a blank window.

i'm using windows xp service pack 2. i try to go to the windows update page and all i get is a blank white screen and on the bottom left hand corner of the screen, it says done. but nothing is there. if i edit the top url, i can go anywhere i want but just not windows update. i have no viruses, spyware, adaware as i have a thorough check of all and came up empty.

Suddenly, I noticed that Windows update no longer works. I still get automatic updates, but for some reason I can't manually update things. Anyone else seen this? If you note, they're asking to install an Active-X control, but the information bar doesn't popup to allow me to continue.

On June 11 I was informed that updates were available for my computer. After doing an express install, I still got a message that updates were available. This time I did a custom install and only one update was available to install, i.e. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 [KB982168] so I did the install and was informed that the installation was sucessfull. However, the notification that this update was available appeared again. I went directly to the MS update site and again was informed that this update should be installed. Again,I successfully installed it, restarted the computer, only to get the update notification again. For some reason this update will not install even though it says that it does. I looked at my Add & Remove list of programs and found.

First off, I would like to note that I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 1 and it's a HP Desktop AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700+ Windows Update keeps showing me a message saying "This version of Windows XP is no longer secure. Please download Service Pack 2." So, I download Service Pack 2 and then I start the install and it backs up the files and stuff and when it's almost done, a message pops up and says "Access Denied". And then it says "Please undo all changes that has been made". I have tried it 2 or 3 times and it keeps doing the same thing.
