Can't Get Past Log On

Jul 2, 2008

The computer is a Dell XPS 400 running Windows XP. It is unresponsive so I can't find any other information. As best he can remember, my 11 year old son says he clicked on a prompt to remove spyware and the computer went into sort of a coma. It can be shut down and turned on using the on/off button. When turned on, it goes through the initial start up and brings up the screen that asks which user to log on. We cannot get past the page this page. Once a user is selected, the screen goes say XPS and Dell and will not advance further.I've looked through the posts to find out how to get on so I can post a hijack file but haven't seen a way to get in when the computer is like this. Please point me to some instructions on how to get started.

Dec 21, 2007

I won't get past the Welcome Screen. I click on my Id and just says loading personal preferences. Right before that happened, I working on my comp. and just froze, so I turned it off and then when rebooting that happened. I have windows XP and haven't messed with the configuration settings, the only thing that I did notice was when I was changing my background picture, I guess that's when it froze. I have also tried starting it in safe mode, but the same thing, just freezes when in the welcome screen.

Cannot Continue Past This Screen

Apr 28, 2008

I have tried repeatedly to download Webroot Window washer ver 6.5 to my wife's computer. For some reason the download arrives with the select language menu vacant. When you click on the dropdown menu, it is also blank. You cannot continue past this screen. My wife has McAfee Virus Scan and Spybot Search and Destroy plus the firewall that Microsoft supplies. Could these interfere with the download? If so, how do I temporarily disable them so I can download Window Washer. As an alternative, can someone suggest another program which will function like Window Washer?

Can't Get Past Starting Screen

Apr 28, 2007

I am running Windows XP media edition on my Toshiba Qosmio Laptop.Currently when I startup I can get only as far as the windows starting screen with the little timer bar flowing but it never goes any farther. All I can do is power off and then start in safe mode.I have tried system restore to several points in the past to no avail. I think the problem may be to do with display drivers as it started shortly after installing Battlefield 2 (a little too advanced for my machine!!) which comes with some nvidia drivers. I have re-installed the drivers that came with the PC and this hasn't worked.

Dual OS - Past Vista 32

May 23, 2010

I have a piece of hardware I use for cutting (scrapbooking thing) and I spent a BUNDLE of money for it ($400) a few years ago. Problem is, Xyron (company) stopped making updates for it past Vista 32. Now here I am with a Dell Inspiron 1545 loaded with Windows 7 and have no way to run the cutter unless I pay Xyron $100 for the new software.Back in 2002, I had a Dell desktop (no longer in use) and I still have the installation CDs for XP from that system. Is it possible with this 1545 to put BOTH Windows 7 and XP on it??? ANDDD....can I use the CDs from the Dell desktop for the installation?

Get Past Login Screen

Sep 26, 2004

Have a friends computer which had many spyware and trojans. Cleaned with adaware, spybot, cwshredder, trojan hunter, cleaned out cookies and temp internet folder. Lastly I ran defrag. It was after defrag that I encountered my problem. When I re-started the computer, it would take me to the login screen and ask me if I wanted to log in as the user or administrator, I chose user. The screen would say "loading your settings" then the desktop background would flash then it would go back to the login screen saying "saving your settings." Tried to start in "safe mode" and in "last known config", however, this problem would occur in all modes.

Can't Get Past Startup Screen

Jan 2, 2006

1st, computer will not boot up unless I unplug the power cord for about 5 min. Then, when I plug it back in, and turn on the computer, it says "choose which windows XP startup you want to use".When I let the time run out for the automatic start, it brings me to another screen. Sometimes the screen is just blank and other times it says "Sorry windows XP could not be booted up" because of some new software updates that was added recently. Then it shows options for all the ways to boot up my computer. And it recommends that I choose last working mode.So I go to that and it either freezes or brings me to my main microsoft office screen and at this point it has the loading bar going across. This either brings me to my main screen or this freezes.I've tried several times and have gotten to several different points but ultimately it freezes.

Computer Won't Boot Past BIOS

Nov 8, 2009

I left my computer in "suspend", and when I sat again, it was frozen at my BIOS screen. Each time I try to restart it, it goes straight to that screen. I can't even access my BIOS settings (pressing keyboard buttons doesn't work). Nothing changed when I placed my XP disk in the ROM drive.

I'm using an ASUS mobo and AMD processor (sorry, I can't recall the particular models right now). I have not changed any hardware or installed new software recently except anti-virus definitions.

Does this sound like a motherboard or PSU issue?

Cannot Get Past Windows Is Starting Up Screen

May 13, 2007

I have a compaq presario 2500 laptop with windows xp home edition sp1 installed. I had left my computer at the desktop screen to go do something and when I came back avast antivirus had come up with a message saying that one of my files was infected with a trojan. i believe the file was stored in the system or system32 folder. anyways, it had reccomended me to move the file to avast's "virus chest", so I did. and i went ahead and worked on my laptop as normal. then after shutting my computer down and starting it back up later in the day, i found that my laptop would not load any further than the blue "windows is starting up..." screen. i let it sit there for about 30 mins. so then i went to my desktop and started researching my problem on google. i tried going into safe mode, but it still gets stuck at the same screen.

I have tried rebooting multiple times and running diagnostics, but nothing appeared wrong. I'm going to assume its virus related.

MAJOR problem trying to install windows XP pro. After rebooting I keep getting to the same screen the "welcome to setup" screen, where I hit ENTER , F8 at the EULA, then I see the partition list.At this point regardless of if I hit ENTER for the selected partition, or delete and recreate the partition (and reformat to NTFS), it loads files from CD, then reboots and takes me back to the same screen.

Can't Get System Past Desktop Page

Feb 21, 2005

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck.

Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to have them wipe my drive. I have e-mails on there that are very precious to me and if for nothing else I would like to keep those besides have a computer I can use!! I do have some sense as to how things work even though I don't always understand how it happens or what I actually did. So, if you could explain in not too techie language I should be able to get it!
