Brand New Dell / Received IE Shutdown Errors
Aug 16, 2005
I just purchased a new Dell Dimension 9100 (new line for Dell). I loaded Mcafee VirusScan, Firewall and Privacy Service and then downloaded updates for all of the preceeding Mcafee programs (there were many). I also downloaded all critical Windows Security downloads. Everything is working fine except when I work with wordpad/notepad/word or other Microsoft programs. At random, when I open these files, I recieve IE shutdown errors. I created a new wordpad and notepad file, saved both and re-opened them: everything seemed fine. Then I ran Windows Explorer and when I tried to open the wordpad file with explorer, I received IE shutdown errors.

I get this message will playing videos, and gaming (Oblivion, BF2, and World of Warcraft). I've reinstalled windows, updated windows, tried 3 different nvidia driver versions, used 3 different sticks of RAM and I keep getting this message. The driver nv4_disp for the display device DeviceVideo0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.

I have just: Done a successful repair/rebuild of XP Home Did a CHKDSK /r/f on my System drive Defragmented my system drive with PerfectDisk Read and applied recommentations on changes so that I would see errors when my system re-boots Yet, When I shutdown my PC, it will shotdown, then re-boot again, without the benefit of a error messagw to help me figure out why it is re-booting instead of shutting down and powering off. Is there something wrong with my Phoenix Bios have ACPI On? What can I do to see error/warning messages on why my system re-boots when I shutdown?

Have two brand new Dell OptiPlex machines with WinXP Pro that reboot when you do a shutdown. They go through the normal shutdown and then start booting again. I've tried everything I can find on the web about power management settings and such, and have contacted Dell who ultimately recommended reinstalling the OS.Would anyone have any other recommendations before I take the drastic step of re installation? The machines have a ton of production software already loaded that will take hours to reinstall.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running windows xp home. 2.99GHZ processor and 58 GB free space left. My problem: My computer automatically goes into hibernation mode and will not start up again for at least 5-10 minutes after. It gives no warning whatsoever when this happens. I'm risking it happening right now. I have the computer set to stay on at all times. All power options are set to "never" turn off.

I have a client who has a brand new PC running Windows XP and Trend 2006 as AV Software. The PC was purchased around August last year, and around November it started freezing up 3 to 4 times a day. When it does so, the power button has to be held down to restart, and the HDD light is light constantly. I intially tried a lot of different things, such as virus scans, hijack this, Anti Spyware etc etc. All of which found nothing.I have now ran some HDD tests and RAM tests which both showed nothing. I dont really want to rebuild again, as I think the same thing will happen again.

I just got my first DVD recorder and am wondering what would be the best brand of DVD I should buy so I don't end up with very many coasters. While I am at it should I buy DVD-r or DVD+r so my DVDs can be played in most DVD players out there.

I have just re-installed Windows XP Professional SP2 to a blank hard drive.I have re-installed Fax console. I would like to import the sent faxes, the received faxes, and the fax address book from the old drive (which is still perfectly workable). In what subdirectory are these items to be found? What are their filenames (or what is the template for the filenames)?

how i can prevent the little cutsies' of animations that are embedded in some emails i receive from 'moving i would assume they just add 'download' time from my server into O.E. i know how to get to 'advanced' tab within I.E. but don't know 'what' to check or uncheck or if this is even an Explorer situation or O.E. setting. i tried but couldn't make any headway. i hate to ask the sender not to include them but i don't want to hurt feelings either but that's a whole other 'advice' column.

I have a modem/fax in my computer and I also have high speed Internet access using a DSL modem. I have connected the modem/fax and the DSL modem to the same phone line using the filter. I intalled the Winfax PRO software in order to use my computer for send/receive faxes. The installation was OK. But this software doesn't work. When I try to send a fax I give the number, I heard the tone but when the Winfax PRO software try to negotiate with the fax I receive an error and I lost the connection. I don't know If the problem is because my phone line was setup for DSL modem. Does anybody has the same problem? Until now I couldn't send or receive any fax.

The family computer is playing up and to the best of my knowledge the computer in question just simply suddenly stopped working as it should. I am unable to get the 'default' welcome screen upon start up and am getting the logon box where you type in a username and passworld. I know how to get rid of this, user accounts>enable welcome screen - but it will not solve the problem. This is just the start of the problems. I get a whole host of errors which popup one after another.

Couldn't pass up post-Christmas price on Toshiba laptop, but it came with XP Home. Will be used on office network and be able to log on to domain. Must upgrade to XP Pro. IT guy tells me that Home cannot be upgraded to Pro without doing complete (non-upgrade) install of Pro. He says this is equivalant of low level format and all other preinstaled software, drivers, etc., will be lost.

I have a work computer that came with Microsoft Word 2007 already installed on it, i did not recieve any product key or anything. it let me use it 50 times, now it's locked me out and i can't touch it, i tried activating it but i can't without a product key. I tried explaining the situation to the microsoft tech support guy and he just told me i had to buy a product key. I had one of my friends tell me that the same thing happened to him, and that it was some sort of glitch in the '07 office program. Apparently there is a way around it on the internet, but i can't find it and i am by no means tech savvy when it comes to computers...

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a small business version instead of Home and Home Office version, if that makes any difference.
I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is older stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?

I'm running XP Pro. Today I received a windows update notification (I have automatic updates set to inform me of available updates before installing). All the updates installed correctly except:Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)and Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906).A summary of the related knowledge base pages regarding the failed installations tells me to uninstall, then reinstall all versions of net framework on this machine. Then go back to the Windows Update web site to check once again for updates to the newly reinstalled net framework versions.

I just really have no clue on how to install windows XP, I set first drive to boot in the bios as the CDROM and put in the windows XP disk, it goes to a blue screen with white text on the bottom saying it's loading stuff.. Then it says "Loading Windows XP" for about 10 seconds, then I get a 2 tone alarm (2 beeps each, like "beep boop beep boop" and the computer shuts down. I don't think it's a heat issue as I can let the computer run all day in dos and it won't shut down, but once it gets to Loading windows Xp it goes downhill.
