Boot priority not working. Shows CD-ROM as 1st boot preference in Setup but always boots to hard drive. Have switched sequences to try all possibilities. Floppy boots but not CD-ROM. Tried several Win XP OS discs. None work. Afraid to format HD and try clean install.

Is there a way to make applications start with a higher then usual priority automatically? I routinely run video encoding in the background which will eat up both the cores on my Opty 170. As expected, this makes certain things sluggish to use. But, I wanna make it so the applications that I actively use (Firefox, MSN, and AIM) have an above normal priority.

I am using winxp pro. A few days , some of window services has changed the task priority to high level .It causing my winamp sound to be skipping, my firefox is stuck for 1 sec then load back normal during surfing. Playing game is hard since the game movement is jerky. Im pretty sure before this, all task in my winxp had normal priority. Please help me. I try change the window xp appearance to classic. But it still same. I also noticed during the jerky, the processor jump up to 100% usage. Also the mouse movement become slow during this jerky. Unable to atatch screesnhot . The processes which using high priority are:csrss.exe,winlogon.exe, ashserv.exe[Avast Antivirus Service], taskmgr.exe.

This tweak will launch most executables with the priority setting you want it to have. Let's say you have a game installed called HIGH NEEDS and the executable is called HN.exe. Here's what to do. Create a new textfile in the game-app wathever-directory (let's say C:HN), but instead of giving it the .txt extension you name it HN.bat-Right-click this file and choose 'Edit', you'll see it'll open notepad. Put this line in:cmd /c start /High HN.exe-Save (make sure you save it as .bat, not as .txt) and close. Now create a shortcut to this file and place it on your desktop. Every time you doubleclick this shortcut HIGH NEEDS will open with priority set to 'high'. (ofcourse you can also create a batchfile on your desktop, containing the full path of the app you want to start but the nice thing of creating a shortcut is you can give it an icon).

In life, the only way to succeed is to get your priorities straight. Well tough-luck, to all you slackers, the computer world ain't much different. Windows has setup a system controlled hiearchy which is notably called the Priority System. By increasing a programs priority, the task manager tells the system to pay more attention to it, by feeding it RAM and optimizing that program to use the system cache more effifiently. Lets explore into the wonderful world of priorities.1.)

I have a 3 year old Compaq Evo n1015v which has recently stopped booting up. I was installing a mouse driver and it simply rebooted whilst it was doing it, now it gets to the Windows loading screen and cuts out with a blue screen of death, then reattempts booting up. If I try loading it up in safe mode it lists the .dlls it's loading then cuts out and reboots after vax347b.sys (for Alcohol 120% I believe). Nothing such as selecting the 'last known good configuration' option works, this includes safe mode and all of that. In addition my cd drive will only read dvds and not cds for some reason, so using my XP cd is out of the question. Basically the last resort seems to be the XP boot floppies, but that gets to disk 3 and cuts out when loading up the 'kernel debugger'. So I'm out of ideas! Wiping the HD is also not an option as there is really important stuff on there including uni work that I can't afford to lose.
Has anyone had similar problems with the boot disks, or does anyone else have any ideas? It has been suggested on other forums to burn a copy of XP to dvd, but I don't think I know anyone with a dvd burner (not to mention the fact that I have no idea how to get a burnable copy of XP). The recovery console would help to get rid of the driver I think is causing the problem, and to run chkdsk, but I'm struggling to work out how I'm going to get to it. Basically if anyone has any tips at all I'd be delighted!

I have had a weird problem of the keyboard not working during boot up -- except it WILL let me get into BIOS. And this is the ONLY time it will not work.A little background is in order, however. Previously, the keyboard stopped working, first during boot up, then totally. Then the mouse stopped working as well. Couldn't do anything at all.... The keyboard is a Micro Innovations, and I'd had it plugged into the PS/2, but I eventually found out that if I plugged it into the USB port instead (it goes either way), the keyboard would work. So, I went out & got a USB mouse, and it worked too. So I was thinking that the card was fried.Last night, I decided to boot it into Safe mode to run some scans. And it wouldn't boot into safe mode, just kept ignoring my F8 command, and going straight to Windows. I did find out that it WILL take my DEL command and go into BIOS, where the keyboard works just fine. So tonite I thought I'd try a repair, thinking maybe some files were corrupt. And it will not take any keystroke to boot from the CD. Again, I can still get into BIOS, though. And, as you can see, it is working fine now. This is how it started in the PS/2 port, when it eventually quit working altogether.

I have a problem with my XP Pro, I can never get past the boot screen (the one with the XP Pro logo and has loading), it would try to load but would never happen. So I tried rebooting in safe mode and it works, I scanned my HD with AVG, Adware, Norton and Spybot. On several of them I found ISTBar and DYFUCA on my computer. So I deleted them with my program, then I deleted all my temporary files, in C:windows emp C:document and settingsuserlocal settings emp and internet temporary files including offline files. Then turned off system restore, and rebooted. It worked however today when booted up XP again same boot screen problem. Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

I was transfering music and word files from my ipod to my computer when a window popped up saying something like "C" drive does not have room. Continue? I pressed cancel and went into my music files to delet some files to clear room. All of a sudden I encountered the blue screen of death! With error "unmountable boot volume". So far I have tried (without success):-Safe Mode-Last know configuration-chckdsk /r-chckdsk /p"Fixboot" recovery console windowxp this says it is looking for F:minint (when it is supposed to be looking for C:windows)-using harddrive as slave in secondary computer to run recovery majority of files came up as "file is unreadable"do not have a floppy drive so couldnt run the manufacturer utillities off web.

Having a problem with booting into safe mode on my SONY WinXP Pro computer, I searched on the internet for a solution....This opens the boot.ini file in Notepad.
- One line should end with "/fastdetect" (NOT "/fastdetect /sos"). Copy that line.
- Paste the line you just copied below the original line. Change "WINDOWS=Microsoft XP Professional" to "WINDOWS="Safe Mode" and add the following text to the end of the line: /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog
- Save the file and click OK to exit the dialog boxes. Note: If you named the Windows XP installation folder something other than WINDOWS when you installed XP, that name will appear instead of WINDOWS in step 6.
Before following the instructions, I created a backup copy of my boot.ini file. I then proceeded to do as instructed. Unfortunately, I needed access to the internet which this didn't allow for. I then copied the origional boot.ini information back to my boot.ini file in Notepad and saved it. However, when I boot, it still goes into the basic Safe Mode.

A couple of things are driving me insane. When I press F8 regardless of my choice the system will allow me to boot only in normal mode. I.E. If I choose "Safe mode with command prompt" and hit enter, the next screen shows first line "Please select the operating system to start" second line "Windows XP professional" highlighted, third line "Use the up and down key to... Press enter to choose" and at the bottom "For troubleshooting and advanced startup options press F8" and the last line, in highlighted blue "Safe mode with command prompt". I then press enter and after scrolling thru all the lines the system reboots to the F8 boot options.Only "boot in normal mode" gets me out of the loop.

i did a previous thread of my computer being slow, ignore that one... i got a much serious problem. Someone told me to go into safemode so i just tried to reboot in safe mode. It wouldn't reboot all i saw was a black screen with a mouse cursor so i press the reset button, but this computer is not stable i always haev to press the reset button. Now when i try to restart it jsut reboots again and again. It brings me this blue screen saying STOP:c0000218 {registry file failure} the hive file or sumthing like that and systemrootsystem32configdefault and then it restarts. When i try to go to safe mode i see all these .sys files loading or sumthing and then it gets stuck after like the 20th one. Im on windows 2000, i installed 2000 in cases like these. i found help on a different site. It told me to go to recovery mode, i instert my XP CD and boot it from taht but that doesn't work for sum reason. SO i got my XP boot disks and it works!! BUTTT i go to recovery mode and it restarts and nothing happens! just a plain restart! what can i do!!!

I cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.
Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.

I have a Gateway CX2618, w/ windows XP tablet edition 2005 version 2002, sp2. And wanted to wipe it clean and reinstall just the things I use. Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.

I de-infected a windows XP system with SP3 and IE7. Once I did that, http no longer loaded in IE. It does not work in portable firefox either. I can type in ftp:// ftp address and IE works. Likewise I
can use https:// and the page loads! What is going on: I tried:
1) Reset ie7 as per MS
2) Removed IE 7
2a) IE6 would not load http either
3) reapplied SP3
4) Repair install win winxp cd.
5) Deleted and re-installed network card
This is where I am now. Still no http://. Since multiple applications are affected, I do not think it is a browser helper.

If just after making the switch on, I press F2 key to check the boot device preference
If just after making the switch on , I press f11 key to reach the boot menu I always find the 1.44 MB Floppy option highlighted as the booting choice.(though there had not been any floppy in the floppy drive, I dont have any really)I make the hard disk option highlighted & it solves the problem only a few times. But next time when I try F11 key to check the boot menu again I find 1.44 MB floppy highlighted.

I haven't installed anything new on my computer but today after having my computer shipped to me via UPS I cut on my computer and where the XP load bar screen was I got: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".Seeing this I knew I went into the BIOS setup and tried to turn the system priority to look at the HDD. Instead I only had the option of the DVD drive and the CD drive.I have no idea how to solve this problem and don't have any of the recovery CD's. I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT because like a bad little boy I did not backup my 4 years worth of work.

After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.
