Bios Recognizes Hard Drive But Windows Wont Install

Nov 4, 2009

I'm running a pc with a 975xbx board and an e6600 that has worked fine for 2 years plus. A couple months ago i replaced my computer case, power supply, and got some new storage hard drives, but my RAM, mobo, cpu, and optical drives stayed the same.I was running windows xp fine for this whole time....and then a couple days ago as I was surfing the web, the computer just shut off spontaneously. no warning, no nothing, just black screen and the computer was off. Now, when I start up, I'll get to the windows startup logo before I get a 0x00000007e blue screen crash. In BIOS, my hard drives, RAM, etc are picked up fine. Just for kicks i moved some ram around, dropped to one stick, unhooked the optical drives, yet the problem persists. Now, if i throw in my windows xp install CD and try to repair or just reinstall, it doesn't find the drive at all. but the bios does.

If i take a new formatted hard drive and insert it, the xp install again doesnt find it.I have 2 raid controllers on my intel board, and the floppy disks for both, but when I boot the raid controller screens pop up fine and recognize drives prior to the windows logo. If i throw my install CD in, however, and hit F6 to go to the raid controller install, the xp cd can't seem to read my floppy disks, as if they aren't even there. but the floppy drive light is on, powered, and the cables are plugged in.This is just really confusing, as if my computer just doesn't read anything but the CD drive.I'm at a loss. I'm willing to just do a clean install of windows on a formatted hard drive, but the windows CD install program won't detect the new drive (it is low-level formatted).I'm using XP professional and it's a full install CD, not just recovery.

Boot Up / Bios Never Recognizes A Hard Drive

Jan 5, 2005

I have tried replacing the power supply-no change.I've tried unhooking cd-rom, floppy, replace ram & everything remains unchanged.Bios never recognizes a hard drive. I've tried several known good hard drives and the original hard drive works in another machine. It starts POST & I get HP splash then back to NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND, It doesn't find the CD rom drive either. What might this be related to? I've replace hard drive cable, floppy cable. The only cable I haven't replaced it the cd-rom drive.

The hard drive works as a slave in another computer. I am running virus scan and spyware on. But, why won't it work in the other computer? I'm thinking its somehow related to the bios and the fact that it cannot see the drive in the bios. I don't find anywhere in this particular bios where I can try to auto recognize the drives

Hard Drive And CD Burner Found By BIOS But Not Windows

Aug 30, 2005

I recently got myself another hard drive, that I wanted to install in my computer. From before, the computer contained a hard drive and a CD-burner. I do not have instructions on how to set the jumpers on the new hard drive to make it master or slave, so I had to try my way. I figured how to make it master, so the present configuration is that this new hard drive is secondary master, and the CD-burner is secondary slave. BIOS recognizes this, but unfortunately Windows does not seem to find any of the devices on the secondary controller with this configuration.

Boot Can't On Suse 9.2 - No Recognizes Hard Drive

Feb 11, 2007

I'm new to Linux and have been using SUse 9.2 and XP systems. Hard drive set up was as follows: Swap (502MB);C drive;Linux (4 Gig);E drive (contained XP OS). Using 37 Gig Drive, Athlon 800 mhz CPU. I used PartionMagic in Windows to set up the partitions and had BootMagic disabled and all worked well. System would boot to Grub and then from there I could go to Windows XP boot. Linux partion was my active partition. Everything ran just fine...but I wasnt using Linux often and decided to try to boot directly to XP.

I decided to make my Windows OS drive E active so that I could boot directly to Windows boot instead of Grub. But, obviously, Grub still booted first. I made the mistake, then, by enabling BootMagic in the hopes I could get to Windows directly without going through Grub. Well BootMagic hid my C:Drive which was viewable simultaneously with E:drive (which contained XP OS, another setup mistake I made when partitioning...but still worked). As a result Grub is gone and I also cannot boot to XP or Linus, even after trying to activate C:drive or activating E:drive containing my XP OS. I'm pretty sure that XP recognizes C:drive as home, even though OS is on E. I have not yet used 'fixmbr' for fear of loosing data contained in C and E partitions. I've considered using spare hard drive as a new boot drive and access files from original hard drive, save them, and then start from scratch with XP....

Doesnot Recognizes External Hard Drive - Drivres Corrupted?

Mar 14, 2006

My laptop doesn't detect the external hard drive. It is strange that sometime the laptop can detect the external hard drive, but most of the time it doesn't.

I have tested 2 different external hard drive and both of them are not detected by the laptop too. When I tried it on other computer, both external cases work perfectly. I am not sure is it because of the usb driver is corrupted or what, but any helps is much appreciated. Thank you.

Jul 17, 2008

i was currently running windows as my only operating system (working perfectly) and decided to try out ubuntu. afterin installing it i decided i didn't like it so i put in my windows CD and deleated the 1st 3 partitions and combined them into a 49gb partition, formatted it and installed windows on it.this worked fine, it formatted correcly and then started copying the setup files onto partition 1, but then after it restarted it wudnt see that windows was there and wudn't continue the installation. it would just go back to asking if i wanted to install from the CD again. i was installing windows xp (no service pack) but i have done this many times with this CD and hasnt stuffed up yet.

Can't Install Windows On SATA Hard Drive

Mar 11, 2009

My old IDE hard drive went out on me so i went and bought a 500g WD SATA hard drive. When I put the windows installation disk in it does not recognize my SATA hard drive. after looking into it online, i found that alot of people had this issue. I read a few suggestions and tried them, (using the F6 function during install with drivers on a floppy disk, and streamlining drivers intot he windows installation disk itself using NLite), and none of them seem to work. I then used my friends old IDE hard drive, installed windows, and used a program to make a disk image of my hard drive and transfer it to my SATA drive. This didnt work either. I havn't fiddled with drive letters, (you know c: and e: and so on) i am thinking this may help but I am not sure. It is not a boot order issue i know how to do all that and nothing works. I am looking for a way to get Windows XP onto my SATA drive. (yes my mother board detects my SATA drive, and it is showing up in windows i just cant seem to get windows on it.)

I would prefer to just copy it from my IDE drive since i have already installed all the updates so if this is possible please let me know.If you know what kind of boot disk i need for windows xp installation to recognize my sata drive during installation that would be a big help too. (i have tried sata controller drivers for my motherboard, i tried using the software that came with my hard drive, and this too didn't work.)

Checked Hard Drive In The Computer BIOS

May 14, 2007

I am using XP on my laptop, tried to boot up my computer and it was extremely extremely slow. Took maybe 15-20 minutes to get started. When the desktop finally came up, it was in a bad resolution. The cursor would move fine, but if i tried to click on anything it would pretty much completely freeze up.Id maybe be able to minimize a window, but no program would open at all.I don't really know what to do since it is pretty much impossible to do anything on the computer.I checked my hard drive in the computer BIOS and it didn't report any problems. Not really sure what my next step should be.I have a lot of information on my computer that i really can't lose, but don't really know how to back anything up at this point. What can i do?

Installed A Second Internal Hard Drive / Can't Access Bios

Sep 16, 2006

just installed a second internal hard drive. tried to access bios at start up (to setup hard drive) but system doesn't respond to ANY keyboard keys. system just continues with normal Windows boot-up. once XP is running all functions and software seem fine. no matter how many times I try at "Press Del to enter Setup" nothing works. Jusat before I had this problem, I had a problem with software (which I have removed) that caused my system to lock up. when I rebooted system stopped and offerred reboot options, ea: Safe Mode, but I the arrow keys would not work, system just went directly to Windows boot up.how can I access the bios if system doesn't respond to keyboard?

Windows Xp Re-installatioin / Preserve Second Hard Drive Data And 2nd Boot Windows Xp?

Jan 1, 2008

I want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

Get Data From Second Hard Drive After Reformatting Windows On Other?

Sep 15, 2009

I have two hard drives(40 GB & 160GB both internal) installed in my system. Earlier I had installed windows XP on the first hard drive (40GB) and was using second hard drive as additional storage. I had partitioned my second hard drive into 5 partitions P, Q, R, S, T. Recently I reformatted my first hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. However this has also affected my second hard drive. Now Windows shows only two drives C: (my first hard drive) and D: (second hard drive) as only one partition each. Moreover it is not showing any data on the second hard drive. I want to get back my parition info and data on the second hard drive. I thought that formatting my first drive will not affect second drive and therefore didn't take back up of the second drive. What shall I do to get back my data and partition info.

Windows And Sonic Keep Saying My Hard Drive Is Full

Feb 7, 2010

Hi. My problem is similar to this one here
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?threadID=295044
Except I am not running Vista and don't have AOL on there.
Also, I don't think my drive is actually full, or if it is, it's because of something that Sonic or Windows did.

I have a bunch of computers. This Dell laptop, Inspiron E1505, is one I primarily use to watch DVD's or online shows. There were a lot of programs installed, because I used to use it regularly, and then I loaned it to someone for about a year. It had very few files in terms of documents, pictures, music, or videos, because I had cleaned all that out before I loaned it to her, and I got a new laptop, and so only use this one to watch DVD's. Also, I should mention it has a fairly new DVD recorder because the old one died a few months back.

Sometimes I use this laptop to burn or copy disks, which is what I have been doing the past two days, using the program Sonic Digital Media LE v7, which came preinstalled. It was working fine copying dvd's (legal copies of ones I recorded myself) until yesterday, when it suddenly said that my hard drive was full and to free up "0 kb" in order to proceed.

When I close the program after this error, it gives me three crash messages (every time).

First one says MediaHub.exe application error.
The instruction at "0x0035afd0" reference memory at "0x35171ae8". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program."

The next error is almost exactly the same but gives all the numbers as 0x00000000.

The third error is Microsoft Visual C++ RUntime Library Runtime Error! program: mediahub.exe
R6025 - pure virtual function call.

At first, rebooting helped this problem, but then I got the error again. So I ran disk cleanup. It took a really long time and then the pc turned itself off. I turned it back on and it said that the pc had overheated because the fan vents were blocked. The vent is on the bottom, and was very dirty (possibly because my friend was a heavy smoker), so I wiped it off with a damp napkin. I rebooted and ran disk cleanup again. I was able to copy disks again until it gave me the error again. Every time I go to the C drive and check the disk free space, it gives me very little there, but I know that it's not because of any files I have on there.

Anyway, I also uninstalled all of the unimportant programs and deleted any extra files I could find. I want to run check disk, but I got an error message and it said it would run it next time I rebooted (that didn't help and check disk still didn't run, and still wouldn't run next time I tried it). I tried to run disk defragmenter, but it said I only had 5% hard drive space left and it needs 15%. I ran it anyway, and it seemed to work, and I was able to copy more disks.

Now I am getting that error message again.

I am running disk cleanup again, compressing old files, so we'll see if that works. I haven't tried System Restore yet, will try that one next. I really would rather not reinstall Windows.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Booting A Windows Installation From An External Hard Drive

I have an external hard drive (150GB) which is partitioned into two parts. One partition , about 145gb, is data and files of my own. Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive. The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.
