Pro SP3 - Freeze Desktop Background Only Showing
Sep 18, 2009I struggle to explain this one. This is a duplicate setup - i have two systems very nearly identical, both HP DC7600's, full-up 4GB RAM, 160GB HD, fairly fresh Windows XP Professional SP3, typical applications: MS Office, Picasa, iTunes, Realplayer, Google Chrome browser, blah blah. Nothing exotic.One of them, after being left with a half dozen tabs open in Chrome, and not much else going on other than AVAST Antivirus running in background, upon checking back in with the Screen Saver "On" [starfield], no password needed, the screen/display freezes on the background image, and nothing else pops up on screen except the mouse cursor.

Apr 5, 2005Trying to help a friend of mine. He had added a shortcut to his desktop, says was active shortcut, ever since then has not been able to change desktop, its white (none) . I went to the sreen to change it and selected the one he wanted . I then closed the system and rebooted, when it first comes up,the background is correct, but when loads icons it reverts to a white background.

Jul 25, 2005Desktop preview screen is blank, however, the image does display on the desktop. Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. Some of the regular Windows images, i.e. Azul, Windows XP, etc. have the film icon, and do not display in preview.

Oct 15, 2007I was using wallpaper spinner which made my background change every minute. I have been using it for almost a year and never had any problems with it. Now when i go into properties to put a wallpaper up they are all grayed out and i only have the option of a color for my background. Anyone have ANY idea on why it cant display pictures and only colors? I have went into my pictures and right clicked and hit set as background and nothing happens i cant even use pictures that came on the computer for wallpaper and my wallpaper spinner was running and it wasn't even showing anything on the background.

Nov 9, 2007I got a huge hullabaloo and 'Malwarealarm' installed randomly ( I got it from a popup when Firefox told me the site was spywarefilled) and the computer was fine. I restart once, and I loose my background, my ability to select a background from the 'Desktop' tab under rightclick-properties on the desktop itself became null (just a black screen), and proceed to try a myriad of things. Installed the new DirectX driver, new ATI Videocard driver, DirectX9.0, rolled back to ATI Xtasy driver, then tried installing DirectX9.0 again. Run virusscan and spywarescans, got rid of a bunch of stupid cookies. When I login or logout of Windows, my old background appears for a second, then disappears once more.

Dec 25, 2008when I go to set a picture as the desktop background it stretches it to fit, fine... but if you dont want everyone looking wide you set it to centre but when I do that it zooms right in on the picture instead of displaying it in its original size on the screen.... why is this? is it because the picture from the camera is massive or is this an XP bug?

Every picture I've saved from the Internet and every picture I've saved from my digital camera appears in the list of background pictures that can be chosen from the "Desktop" tab in Display Properties. MOST of these pictures would be inappropriate as desktop wallpaper so I'd rather not have them as choices in the list (menu). In addition, there are hundreds of them! I don't want to delete them from "My Pictures" however.

May 2, 2006when I open my Display Properties and move to the Desktop tab and choose Browse to choose a picture to set as my background, after I have selected Open and the box closes, the Apply button is unavailable and the image I chose does not appear in my list or in the preview. I've also taken notice that certain images that were once in the list of available backgrounds images, such as Ascent, Autumn and Azul no longer appear to be available. Right clicking on an image and choosing Set as desktop background does not work, and neither does choosing the same option from the Picture Tasks. Does anybody have any idea what has happened and how I can restore whatever settings I may have changed without applying a system restore?

Display Issues- Graphic Distortion And Cannot Open The Display Settings
May 8, 2008The monitor started showing graphic distortion. I ordered a new monitor but had the same distortion on it. I updated the ATI drivers but it did not solve the problem. In trying to trouble shoot the problem following directions on the ATI website, I changed all the graphic settings to the lowest and slowest available. This got rid of the distortion but the settings need to go! Now I cannot open the display settings.

Apr 3, 2008All my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.
I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.
Display Settings Changed: Wont Access Features In Display Tab?
Apr 18, 2006my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features
Display Issues- The Display Area Has Been Reduced By 40 Percent
Aug 5, 2008I was installing security cables for the computer stations. when I finished and rebooted the computers(had to disconnect power and other cords to run the security cables) one of them had a display problem.
it seems that the display area has been reduced. the functional area of the screen is maybe 60% of what it should be. in this area it is complete with the full desktop able to be accessed and nothing is missing. but the right 20% of the screen is solid black (cursor stops at the boundary) and the bottom 20% of the screen(that's not black) is displaying a second image of the top 20% of my desktop. (cursor also stops at this boundary.)
Display Issues- Have To Change Display Properties At Every Startup
Dec 7, 2007I reinstalled XP Pro with SP1 on my computer today. Everything is working well except when my desktop loads the actual display is about an inch to the right on the screen. If I go into properties and change/apply the screen resolution from 800 x 600 then back to 1024 x 768 it realigns and all is well. I would just prefer to not have to do that each time I restart windows.
