For about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".

View 4 Replies View RelatedI can't get XP Pro to get past "Setup is starting Windows" ,to allow me to format.Loads all drivers up to that point,then the error in above post.Pressing F6 or F10 to install 3rd party(XFX MB drivers) has no effect,and Alt-F2 ultimately gives error also.S prompt is no joy also.Tried F8 for Safe Boot and no joy.Cleared CMOS several times.All drives are there in CMOS. All RAM (4 Gigs) is detected I raised Memory voltage to 1.9 volts standard for my ram),and raised FSB to 1600 Mhz from 1333 (standard also).Put timings to standard 7-7-7-24T Tried Memory linked/unlinked/Auto/1T/2T I Tried only 1 SATA drive,and 1 Gig of RAM with 1 DVD RW /2 drives and 2 Gig of RAM,I Enabled standard RAID for each and every drive and ultimately disabled them cause I want the XFX 790i ultra motherboard RAID Drivers.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen i put in teh Win xp disc its starts loading teh file etc.. and then when done after i press enter and "Setup is starting windows" its freezes andi get liek A black dot and a few like patterns on the screen or soemtimes teh screen just goes mad liek with different colourd patterns but ontop of the blue "Setup is starting windows" screen ive checked teh disc and made a copy both work fine checked teh CD rom works fine put a diffremnt cd rom drive in and made no difference cant check ram because my computer doesnt take DDR2. ive put diffrent IDE harddives in with and without a SATA convoertor and the same thing happens with the "Setup is starting windows" also when i start the computer up before i boot from cd or anything after all that without booting from CD i get a BSOD code 0x07B.

I had left my computer at the desktop screen to go do something and when I came back avast antivirus had come up with a message saying that one of my files was infected with a trojan. i believe the file was stored in the system or system32 folder. anyways, it had reccomended me to move the file to avast's "virus chest", so I did. and i went ahead and worked on my laptop as normal. then after shutting my computer down and starting it back up later in the day, i found that my laptop would not load any further than the blue "windows is starting up..." screen. i let it sit there for about 30 mins. so then i went to my desktop and started researching my problem on google. i tried going into safe mode, but it still gets stuck at the same screen.

I regularly put my laptop into hibernation rather than shutting down.
Until recently all worked OK.
However, suddenly, when resuming windows the BSOD appears. After switching off then on again, I have to delete the resume data and boot from scratch.
just start my PC and suddenly it was black after Windows XP logo screen and flashes BSOD. I did install a driver recently. Cannot enter safe mode as it stopped at /driver/JGOJO Cannot enter "from previous working setting" I can't boot up at all. The error code in the blue screen is Page Fault in Non Paged Area with code 0x00000050 something.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old system I am installing a new hard drive in and trying to install Windows XP Pro on it. It's the only hard drive in the system, a Western Digital 500GB SATA. The MB is a Intel D102GGC2 with a Intel Pen D processor. Windows has run just find on this system. Replaced the hard drive because could not boot the installed windows. That hard drive is no longer installed in the system.
I insert the Windows CD and the install process goes fine till it tries to start windows setup. It stalls at "Setup is starting windows"
I am trying to install xp on this good friend of mine's machine that took a dive last week. We replaced the motherboard, cpu, and memory. And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.

The cd boots and the "Setup is loading files" goes through but then stalls at "Setup is starting windows". Waited for 2 hours just in case and still the same results.From what I can gather this points to a hardware problem. I have tried different ram modules and removed the battery but all to no avail.Could this be a processor or motherboard problem? I did everything the person above me did and then I took the hard drive out, reformatted it and tried installing XP SP2, Windows Home and the recovery cd supplied by HP. Every time it is gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes. I know the hard drive is working since I tested it in another computer. The reason I needed to reload XP is the notebook would load and get to the Windows XP loading screen and then freeze.It wouldn't boot in safe mode either.

Then, it decided not to boot up one morning, in either regular or safe mode.It won't boot from the CDROM drive either. It does boot from floppy.I've replaced RAM, taken out all non-essential hardware, replaced HDD cables.HDD can be recognised in another system.Mouse and KB are not usb.I removed the HDD partition, intending to reload XP, but the load hangs on "setup is starting windows" and never goes anywhere - i left it overnight, just to be sure.I repartitioned and reformatted using a 98 disk, just for kicks, to see if it'd work. Yep, boots to c:> HDD manufacturer's diagnostic reports no errors.I have put in another, new SATA HDD, as well as a new ide hdd.

I used DBAN (Boot and Nuke) to wipe my data clean in hopes of reinstalling WinXP fresh. This morning while trying to reinstall Windows XP Pro SP2 I ran into several problems:
The copy I paid for was not recognized as a full version.
A backup copy I had borrowed from a friend was recognized and successfully allowed me to format my HD. However, while installing the OS, after getting to about 80% of the files copied it started saying it couldn't find certain files.
I had to swap copies of the WinXP discs several times and Retry to get all of the windows files copied.
Before getting to that, I formatted my HD using NFTS full which was successful. After finally getting all the Windows files copied, the system performed the initial reboot, and after the Windows XP black logo screen I got the BSOD stop error:
"Process1_Initialization_Failure"
I do not have Norton GoBack installed and have never had any issues with this computer at all so I don't see how it could be a HD, Memory or CDROM issue.
Do I need a new copy of WinXP Pro?
I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.

View 12 Replies View RelatedToday I did an update on my norton security 2005 and updated my ewido suite. After I updated both of them I restarted my computer in safe mode so that I could run ewido because for some reason I was getting a notification that I had a keylogger on my computer. I kept blocking it but it kept coming back. This is the first time anything like that has ever been on my computer. I put a 56k modem and aol on it because I moved and I dont have cable modem here and thats when I started to have problems with my comp. Well, when my computer went to start back up it froze, so I manually restarted it. When it started back up it came to the screen asking to start up in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command line, last known working conditions, and normal start up. I tried to start in safe but it started loaded everything and froze up while it was doing its check. It did the same thing in all the safe modes. So I tried it in the last known working option and it went to the Windows XP black loading screen and finished loading then turned to an all black page and froze up again. I tried doing it in normal startup mode and it froze up again after the Windows XP loading screen. It froze on the all black screen again. So, now it wont get any further then that screen. I took out the 56k modem and tried and it still didnt work. Everything seems to be running in the computer. Its not hot. I have not downloaded anything on my computer if a few months. I havent even open any attactments in emails in a few months. Oh yeah I cant get a HJT log or anything since it wont start up in any open. I have windows xp pro sp2..

After trying a couple of times I hooked up an older 15" monitor. I seemed to get a signal in the beginning but after minutes the screen was black. I booted the computer again in Safe Mode and the computer booted OK. I tryed Safe Mode a few times and it booted OK each time.
How to launch the windows desktop without going through the user select page. I know that it is just a matter of customizing the way i log on but i can't remember how it's done.

During installation, my computer froze, for like 10 mins, then I rebooted and the computer just stayed black. Nothing is loading in the background, I know that for sure. I tried using the Recovery and Applications/Drivers disc but it only works after you load the bios screen.

Have a XP Home PC here, and a number of services are not starting including the RPC service. Saw on an earlier thread this may be related to the DCOM service, but this won't start either.Have run a Hijack this log and there's nothing to report there, system restore doen't work because it's one of the many auto start services that don't start along with windows installer. The link below shows a conversation with a guy who has the same problem as me only he had to rsolve his via a re-install. Don't mind doing this if that's what's needed, just would love to be able to fix it!
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy wifes computer runs WinXP pro w/sp2, the computer boots up fine but when windows starts the winXP logo is all misconfigured, and it takes about 15 - 30 minutes for windows the completely start. The logo screen will look different each time windows is started. I will try to recreate the screen.This is a crude recreation of the display.I have gone as far as doing a complete format and clean install of WinXP and other programs. I still get the same thing! Could it be a faulty video card? (this one is integrated in MB). the MB is an ASUS A7N266.I will try using a spare video card to ruleout that possibility. If it is not a graphics issue what else? CPU, or MB. I saved many files to a USB drive I use for backups, is it possible for a boot sector virus to reside in the My Documents folder?I kept Norton AV, SpyBot SD, and AdAware upto date and tried to run scans frequently; however, these my not catch everything.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was using my comp yesterday and the right & left click functions of the mouse stopped working in IE. They worked fine on the task bar. I rebooted and it took almost 15 minutes to come back up. CPU usage is at 100% all the time. Needless to say it barely runs it's so slow but everything seems to work. I rebooted into safe mode and cpu usage is normal but I can't seem to find the hang. I also ran msconfig and disabled all the startup items and service items, XP seems to start. things occur normally up to the splash screen, but just after that is where it hangs.
