Cannot Get Past Windows Is Starting Up Screen

May 13, 2007

I have a compaq presario 2500 laptop with windows xp home edition sp1 installed. I had left my computer at the desktop screen to go do something and when I came back avast antivirus had come up with a message saying that one of my files was infected with a trojan. i believe the file was stored in the system or system32 folder. anyways, it had reccomended me to move the file to avast's "virus chest", so I did. and i went ahead and worked on my laptop as normal. then after shutting my computer down and starting it back up later in the day, i found that my laptop would not load any further than the blue "windows is starting up..." screen. i let it sit there for about 30 mins. so then i went to my desktop and started researching my problem on google. i tried going into safe mode, but it still gets stuck at the same screen.

Starting Up It Gets Hung Up At "Windows Starting Up"

Mar 25, 2007

For about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".

Computer Starting Very Slow

Once the computer has loaded.. and the start menu appears, it takes a long time for me to actually use any program or function. I was wondering if HJT would show any problems, and whether you guys could point out potential problems with suggestions.

Computer Starting Slow Down - Freeze Up

Jun 18, 2008

My computer is starting to act funny. It is beginning to slow down. It freezes up often. The computer is 3-4 years old and is a Dell 4700. I had to replace the hard drive about a year after I bought it. I have deleted the cookies and also I have deleted the temp. internet files. Also I have defraged and ran disc cleanup. I blow the dust out of the inside about every 6 months. I ran the Dell diagnostics and the computer froze up when it got to the "optimize start up " section. I have the Hijack Log available if needed.

I am running Windows XP media edition on my Toshiba Qosmio Laptop.Currently when I startup I can get only as far as the windows starting screen with the little timer bar flowing but it never goes any farther. All I can do is power off and then start in safe mode.I have tried system restore to several points in the past to no avail. I think the problem may be to do with display drivers as it started shortly after installing Battlefield 2 (a little too advanced for my machine!!) which comes with some nvidia drivers. I have re-installed the drivers that came with the PC and this hasn't worked.

Starting Screen Hangs For Over A Min Page

Sep 26, 2005

I have windows xp home edition service pack 1 with all the updates, i can't install sp2 because my hardware (even with bios update) will not accept it and i had to reinstall windows after not being able to boot from installing sp2...but that is another story. After doing some recent updates my computer now hangs for about a minute before entering windows, it hangs after it reaches the blue screen that says "windows is starting" than finally you see "welcome" and it loads. I'd like to think of myself as a power and advanced user so i did the basics, checked the startup, disabled services, ran norton, used microsoft antispyware did a registry check, used tuneXP to defrag the boot.ini and used bootvis. The comp sure as hell restarts fast but bootvis says that "log on service" takes 168.7 seconds that is just not good.

Upon starting a black screen came up saying there was corruption. I attempted to reformat it once more Via the XP install setup, and the drive was not listed. After reformatting the drive once more on another computer, attempting to boot off the CD results in "NTLDR is missing". As a result, I unplugged the SATA cable from the hard drive, and reinserted it while windows install was loading.

Starting Up Screen Takes Too Long To Load

Jan 12, 2009

My Windows start-up is pretty decent (after I log-in to my user account). What's taking too long is the "Windows Is Starting Up" screen:It takes about 5 mins. or so before the log-in screen shows up. Anyway, here's what happened prior to this event:
My Windows XP OS has just been repaired due to a stop error. One of my RAM cards (I have two installed previously) has also been removed because the technician deemed that it was the cause of the stop error. Now my question is, is it the cause of the slow down? I mean having a smaller RAM? I'm thinking that it could be the cause but I'm having second thoughts because I only had 1 RAM card installed way back but the stalling of the "Windows is starting up" screen never happened. I've had a slow running PC, yes, but I never had to wait that long for the "log-in" screen to show up (10 seconds tops). I only have 6.46 GB free space now which is small

Starting Up - Black Screen - Machine_check_exception STOP OV000009c

Nov 13, 2009

When I start up, I get the blue windows screen saying it needs to "check file and folders," but at the bottom of the screen where it gives the percentage scanned, it stays at zero, and after a couple of minutes, goes to a black screen and and says "machine_check_exception STOP:OV000009c,."whatever that means. If I hit anything on the keyboard (on the first screen) before it attempts to scan, it starts up fine, and runs fine. I tried defrag and doing the "correct error" thing from the Properties tab in My Computer C Drive. I used to get this if the computer was not shut down properly, but it would scan up to 100%. Now it does nothing. how to correct this, or should I expect the whole thing to crash if I keep using it this way?

Blue Screen Stating Starting Up - User Account Setting

Jul 11, 2010

Wanted to skip the Login screen on my Windows XP computer and login to my account automatically, so my computer would boot faster. I used this ( http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/welskip.php ) guide. So, i went to Start > Run > I entered in "control userpasswords2" and hit "OK" > I unchecked the box which states "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" and applied the setting > The computer then requested the username and password of the account I wished to automatically login. This is where I think I messed up. By default, the username box is filled in with "Administrator" and since I am the administrator I did not change the username to "Ben" (which is what my accounts name is) and I left the username box filled with "Administrator". Also, I left the password blank (this is because I have no password). Now when I try to start up my computer I am stuck on the blue screen stating "Starting Up" and I never get to my desktop. How do I fix this (meaning, how do I change this setting back)? Can I boot my computer into safe mode and then change the setting back, or is there an easier way to fix this?

It will start about and give me the option of how i would like to start (in safe mode or regular) and no matter which option i pick it will go to the loading screen for windows xp and just sit there with the progress bar going for hours or until the comptuer dies. It never gets past this point or gives me any kind of errors.

Installing Process Stops At "Setup Is Starting Windows"

Jul 2, 2008

I have an old system I am installing a new hard drive in and trying to install Windows XP Pro on it. It's the only hard drive in the system, a Western Digital 500GB SATA. The MB is a Intel D102GGC2 with a Intel Pen D processor. Windows has run just find on this system. Replaced the hard drive because could not boot the installed windows. That hard drive is no longer installed in the system.

I insert the Windows CD and the install process goes fine till it tries to start windows setup. It stalls at "Setup is starting windows"
