I like to have my tiles on the start screen sorted as I want and that they stay on the place I've moved them to.
But after each reboot of my computer Windows decides to re-arrange them.
This might be exciting for adventurers and explorers but I just want to use my computer quick and easy.
How I keep windows from re-arranging?
I want to make a slideshow. How can I move and rearrange pictures into a new order and freeze it by give them all a new name? This was easily done in windows XP. Any way to do this in windows 8?
View 9 Replies View RelatedEach time I start the computer is is necessary for me to adjust the screen resolution to cause the screen tiles to appear when clicking "start" on the right side of the screen. What am I not doing? When I open the computer the next time I adjust the screen resolution back to a different setting and the tiles come up.
Also (I'm obviously a newcomer to W. 8), I get a dialogue box each time which refers to to: "RUNDll". Something about an issue with opening something???? I click "OK" and it goes away. Appears every time I start up.
Assume Is started a new Win8 system.Then at first the tile/frames overview appear.
When I click now on one of the tiles/frames (e.g. fin, news,...) then I jump to the corresponding section. Fine.
But how do I return to the tiles/frames overview?
I tried ESC key but this didn't work.
I found no "RETURN to overview" link/button neither.
Whats the magic key press?

Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?
If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....
I have windows 8.1 and I have noticed that my externall hdd turns off after a few mins of being idle (The led turns off as well.), but I can still see it on the windows explorer and it turns on again when I click on it.
Is that normal ? It doesn't happen on Windows 7.
I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Before doing the clean install, all hardware being identical, my Windows 8 was ran smoothly and went to sleep fine automatically after 8 minutes, and 20 minutes later into hibernation.
Now, after the clean install, although I believe I have installed and set up everything as before, the computer does not reach standby automatically anymore. I do not seem to be able to figure out why this is, or how my configuration is different than before. I do not mean to claim that it's Win 8.1's fault (I hope it isn't, because otherwise it would mean that the solution is out of my hands), but it is much more likely that during the lengthy clean install, program installation and configuration process some things have ended up being set up differently than before.
I'd like to figure out how to approach the solution-finding process in a systematic manner as obviously there are many possible culprits that I would like to eliminate one by one. For example, you can find many single tips on the web on this subject, but we would rather need a clear to-do list of what to check. E.g., how can the event logs be used to find the error?

I had this problem for few weeks now. I set windows to hibernate at night then next morning the power turned on my itself. I can't find out what waked it.
I have turned off automatic windows update, maintenance, wake from network adapter. still the same.
Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Ultimate 64 to Windows 8 64 bit
I found suggestions for:
1) Deleting OLE from the Registry under Local Microsoft Software - did not work
2) Create alternate users - did not work
3) User profile change - did not work
4) Change Display settings - did not work
Basically you can move windows 8 tiles right and left but if you have multiple rows you cannot directly swap tiles up and down.
For example imagine I have two rows of tiles each with two tiles so a1, a2 and b1 and b2. I can swap a1 with a2 and b1 with b2 without any issues. However moving b1 with a1 forces a1 to move to the right meaning a2 is now where b1 would be.
I'd love to be able to just swap them so swapping a1 and b1 would swap the two around and leave the others alone. Is there a way around this?
Is there a way to edit the content (path, name, image) of a standard Tile ? I like to p.e. alter the Weather-tile, so it goes to my favourite weather website.

The only problem that I'm having is that every time 2 things play at once, the other's volume is lowered. like when I am playing battlefield 4, my gun sound good and then when my friend talks on teamspeak my gun is barely heard for a few seconds afterward. Ive tried changing the "communications- do nothing" thing, but it's not working.

I got to the end of the page, and I saw a "flash" - loading page, at the bottom of the screen, and the next page automatically loaded. I didn't have to click on "next". I just continued to "hit" the 'page down' key.

I have made a few changes to speed up Firefox that you see on Google in the "about:config" area. And I have added the "Fastest Fox" add-on.
If there is some setting I can do that would apply to "all" websites, I sure would like to do that.
I used the Windows 8 Refresh and like many others I seem to have lost all the important files. Where as I could simply connect my Camera and it would automatically connect now it does't . ...seem to be in order for the system requiring a password to be entered before the system loads the start screen or desktop but I'm directly in the desktop whether I cold boot or reboot.
You can prevent Windows from downloading the latest drivers for whichever device, BUT you can't prevent it from auto-installing drivers that it already has for whichever device. Meaning, the below trick, does nothing and Windows still installs drivers for several devices after you uninstall them and restart:

The one I can't try is the system refresh because the windows tiles don't work which mean I can't open PC Settings to get that started.

i have windows 8 installed and would love to upgrade to windows 8.1 but because the tiles dont work i cant open the windows store. Just like most people out there the other tiles work like chrome etc just not the standard windows 8 ones. no i dont have any additional antivirus or firewalls turned on. When I launch things like PDF files from a desktop application, it opens in the tile application of Windows 8. How do I close it and do other functions, like print and save, that I can do with the old desktop version?

Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.
By default the time for my laptop to restart after installing updates is 2 days! Can I reduce this time so that my laptop will restart when the update is done whilst I am out?
