Upgrade from Windows 7 Home Ultimate 64 to Windows 8 64 bit
I found suggestions for:
1) Deleting OLE from the Registry under Local Microsoft Software - did not work
2) Create alternate users - did not work
3) User profile change - did not work
4) Change Display settings - did not work
After running win 8.1 for several months (mainly by running desktop and working as I always used to with occasional forays into the win 8.1 start screen and clicking tiles), I have discovered that just recently many of the tiles don't work correctly or at all.
Two different examples; in the win 8.1 start screen I can see news displayed in my 'news' tile, cant see a tile displayed in my clock tile to name 2.
If I click on the affected tiles, the screen fills with the coloured background and the news icon (or clock icon) then I get returned to the desktop with this 'tile' now an icon in the bottom menu bar, no content is shown. Some however do work such as my Facebook, internet explorer, music and LinkedIn tiles to name a few.
I don't know if it is relevant but just recently I have been having issues with Drop Box not being able to start on power up and telling me to sort out permissions. On one occasion it asked me to change inheritance settings (don't know what that is) but it did not work so I changed them back.
I have the problem since a few weeks (mostly after a tile update), and I'm not the only one, my friend has it too on both his laptop and desktop, that the live tiles, or actually some of them, for example weather, are not refreshing anymore. It just shows the blue weather tile. When I open it, it works though, news the same. Also I tried to deinstall and reinstall the weather app, but now it doesnt even show the "use live tile" button anymore (look at picture).

View 5 Replies View RelatedTrying Windows 8 at work and bought new Samsung 700t tablet. Windows 8 works fine with local user (linked to live id) and all our software including Symantec Endpoint 12.1.2. As soon as I join to domain (server 2008) and reboot the live tiles no longer function. Have total reset several times and tried refresh and restore points. My guess is that has to be default behavior of Win 8 GPO compared to 2008 domain GPO. We are very plain on our policies and so far have not found anything on local computer or GPO that can correct issues.

When I click now on one of the tiles/frames (e.g. fin, news,...) then I jump to the corresponding section. Fine.
But how do I return to the tiles/frames overview?
I tried ESC key but this didn't work.
I found no "RETURN to overview" link/button neither.
Whats the magic key press?
Basically you can move windows 8 tiles right and left but if you have multiple rows you cannot directly swap tiles up and down.
For example imagine I have two rows of tiles each with two tiles so a1, a2 and b1 and b2. I can swap a1 with a2 and b1 with b2 without any issues. However moving b1 with a1 forces a1 to move to the right meaning a2 is now where b1 would be.
I'd love to be able to just swap them so swapping a1 and b1 would swap the two around and leave the others alone. Is there a way around this?
Is there a way to edit the content (path, name, image) of a standard Tile ? I like to p.e. alter the Weather-tile, so it goes to my favourite weather website.

I am running 8.1 on a desktop and Yesterday the live tiles were working but today not one live tiles is updating. I have not made one change to my computer , not a thing.

The one I can't try is the system refresh because the windows tiles don't work which mean I can't open PC Settings to get that started.
Is there a way I can do this without having to open PC Settings which wont actually open.
i have windows 8 installed and would love to upgrade to windows 8.1 but because the tiles dont work i cant open the windows store. Just like most people out there the other tiles work like chrome etc just not the standard windows 8 ones. no i dont have any additional antivirus or firewalls turned on. Yes I've tried to reset the tile service, yes I've tried the app diagnostic tool. Nothing is working.
When I launch things like PDF files from a desktop application, it opens in the tile application of Windows 8. How do I close it and do other functions, like print and save, that I can do with the old desktop version?

I cannot move, group, pin, whatever any of my tiles. right clicking does nothing, and they simply wont move. But i still can open my apps no problem. I am not using a custom theme.

After days of looking for a fast and pretty way to shutdown,restart,sleep and lock my computer in windows 8 i came up with this solution.
I have created very simple batch files with commands to shutdown,restart,lock,sleep that are simple to create and use a simple tool to add your own tiles to the start menu called OblyTile(freeware) .

If you don't want to use my Batch files for security reasons its easy to create your own. Make a new txt file copy each line in red from below into the body of the txt file.
To Lock type "C:WindowsSystem32
undll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation" then save as Lock.bat
To Shut Down type "C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -s -t 00" then save as Shut Down.bat
To Sleep type "C:WindowsSystem32
undll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0" then save as Sleep.bat
To Restart type "C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -r -t 00" then save as Restart.bat
OblyTile is very self explanatory, But for the 30x30 icon just use the 256x256 Windows 8 will re size it ...
Yesterday I was watching a video on YouTube no problems when all of a sudden it shut down and didn't want to load back up, after clicking the shortcut on the desktop a dialogue window popped up saying that 'this program isn't in this location' (or something similar) and if I wanted to delete the shortcut. Thinking nothing much of it I rebooted my machine.
After rebooting, some of my tiles were missing and the rest of the tiles had a small black 'X' on the corner, I couldn't open any of my apps and searching for them resulted in the icon popping up in the charms bar but was unable to open them. Literally 20 seconds later all of the tiles disappeared, the charms bar stopped working and the whole screen looked completely blank.
One more reboot later and I have no tiles on the main start screen, no tiles when I swipe down to all apps, no search results for control panel or task manager, the charms bar works but all I can do is access my WiFi network, volume and screen or search.
The tablet is a Dell Latitude 10 ST2.

I installed programs called vaultClient by SourceGear, Mumble (a chat client) on my machine, needed to do a reboot. After rebooting, the Start interface show up with all the tiles and what have you, but clicking into Desktop rendered nothing, clicking any of the program tiles, nothing. Going into Apps and trying to open programs, nothing.....I can't do anything but look at the Start interface, but when clicking on my machineName icon to Sign out, that works.

monitor is small, but it supports 2560 * 1256 resolution resolution is too high on my small monitor, so every text and pictures are too small on my windows
i already using my windows with scaling up icons, texts, by changing registry values.
but still, texts and tiles on metro UI is not changed, it still is in small size.
To make these tile's font size bigger, what can i do?
Seen this on the start screen my live tiles on the top row and the bottom row gets cut off

I can resolve it by resizing a tile but it cuts off again when i move a tile. Its obviously a bug if you take a look at both screenshots side by side.
When I go to customize a live tile, only get 2 choices when resizing (SMALL or MEDIUM).
Most other tiles can be resized in 4 sizes (SMALL,MEDIUM,WIDE,LARGE).
why or how to fix it? Where would I go to control it?
After installing Windows 8 Media Center I lost most of the Tiles on the Start Screen. Ican't find a way to get them back.

Unfortunately, I clicked some of the wrong stuff and hid data that I'm pretty sure the computer thinks is important, and now my Metro tiles are missing.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently turn off the login password on Windows 8.1, HP laptop. The next time she went to turn it on, all the normal tiles from the Start Screen were gone with the exception of five tiles: IE, File Explorer, Store, SkyDrive and Desktop.
The File Explorer icon opens a folder showing the various libraries and devices/drivers. When she clicks on the Documents folder it doesn't show any of her files. I did eventually find them by going to her name in the Users folder, but we cannot understand why simply taking away the requirement for a login password would change everything. All her browser favorites were also wiped out, and she had to reinstall Chrome.
