Windows 8.1 Does Not Go To Sleep / Standby Automatically
Oct 18, 2013
I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Before doing the clean install, all hardware being identical, my Windows 8 was ran smoothly and went to sleep fine automatically after 8 minutes, and 20 minutes later into hibernation.
Now, after the clean install, although I believe I have installed and set up everything as before, the computer does not reach standby automatically anymore. I do not seem to be able to figure out why this is, or how my configuration is different than before. I do not mean to claim that it's Win 8.1's fault (I hope it isn't, because otherwise it would mean that the solution is out of my hands), but it is much more likely that during the lengthy clean install, program installation and configuration process some things have ended up being set up differently than before.
I'd like to figure out how to approach the solution-finding process in a systematic manner as obviously there are many possible culprits that I would like to eliminate one by one. For example, you can find many single tips on the web on this subject, but we would rather need a clear to-do list of what to check. E.g., how can the event logs be used to find the error?

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook less than six months old and running with Windows 8 and latest updates to date. My Toshiba Satellite will not auto. standy/hibernate, it will only do it by me executing it manually.
-All device drivers are up-to-date, according to Toshiba download site, including graphics driver.
-All USB devices have been un-plugged.
-I have done a re-boot of the notebook, several times, and it made no difference.
-I have turned on and off the screen saver settings.
-I have changed and changed back the power scheme settings.
-I ran the powercfg -requests tool, and it reported no problem.
I noticed when I ran the Toshiba hardware troubleshooter, it said to turn off the screen saver, but it was already turned off. I noticed in searching the net that other Toshiba users say they have noticed this too.
I also noticed that when I choose my photos as a screen-saver they take a long time to run, or sometimes not at all.

Computer will not fall asleep by itself. Windows 8 Professional 64 Bit is the OS.
Sleep Settings = Sleep after 10 minutes.
USB Selective Suspend = Enabled.
Hard Disk Sleep = 9 Minutes.
Wake Timers are Disabled.
We have suspended all suspect Applications and still the Computer will not Sleep.

I have an HTPC that previously had Windows 7 installed. I have it setup to sleep automatically after 3 hours in case we accidentally leave it on. I did a Windows 8 Pro upgrade on top of it, and it ported all of my apps and settings fine.
However, no matter what I do, it won't seem to go to sleep automatically. It works perfectly fine when I do it manually. I've gone into desktop mode and verified nothing is running (nothing open on the taskbar, at least). There is no video app or anything still running that would block sleep.
How can I properly debug what may be blocking it from sleeping? Could it be some glitch where it thinks it's setup to sleep in the power options but in reality it's not?

So whenever i type something for more than 5-10 seconds my computer goes into standby mode.
This problem happened on windows 7 as well and I tried like every virus tool you can imagine to find out what could cause this. I did find malware and some other junk but that didn't fix the problem so i re-formated my computer with my newly acquired windows8 copy.
But to my luck, the problem persists.
Well then it must be a CPU or a PSU problem right? I cleaned the interior of my PC, checked if the fans are running.
Observed the temperatures with speedfan...everything normal. Then i had my computer sit in bios mode for an hour or so...it didn't shut down.
I'm starting to think that it's actually my keyboard or something going nuts? Is this possible?
The windows 8 event log says that kernel's "energy-management" has initiated the standby.
My system specs:
Intel Core 2 CPU6600 @2.40GHZ
4.00GB RAM
64bit Win8
Geforce 460

During the Christmas season i received a shiny new SSD for my Dell 1121 laptop. I went about installing the drive following one of the many install articles on the interwebs that shows several optimization tips for SSDs. After doing so i noticed the expected increase in performance. Mostly the startup times of the OS and of most apps.
Only problem i have now is that my battery tends to die rather rapid while the system sleeps. Prior to the SSD it would seem i could leave the system on standby for a week or better with no issue. Now i am lucky if the system stays alive for a day on standby. Something that may have changed during the install or a SSD optimization thing that could have screwed with my battery life on standby?

I've upgraded to windows 8.1 a few days ago through a custom install as I was running windows 8 x86 and wanted to switch to x64. I've also just updated the BIOS.
After the upgrade though, my laptop goes into sleep/standby and locks the screen instead of turning off the display as I have it set. So, if I edit any power plan settings to turn off the display after 2 minutes, it will go to sleep after 2 minutes.

I do a lot of scheduled recording with my Windows 8/x64, tuner card, Xbox extender set up. I've been using MCE Standby Tool to be able to automatically go in and out of standby or hibernate mode for unattended recording. It worked great until I upgraded to Windows 8 and now won't go into Standby again automatically after recording a program.

relating to windows 8.1 where upon start up the icons rearrange towards the top right hand side the screen.
It may happen from when I re-start the PC from standby, or if the screen saver has been activated, or even possibly upon a cold reboot.
I should mention, that Im using a 27" High DPI monitor (2560x1440) connected via Displayport. Ive also have enabled auto arrange icons/align icon to grid.
Lenovo Workstation E32 Screensaver is enabled Intel/latest HaSwell CPU (I5) with built in graphics (displayport)

After my laptop wakes from standby, wifi will detect no networks. Turning wifi off/on via harware switch on laptop does not work. I need to perform a reboot to get wifi to work again. Laptop is S10-3t with a Broadcom wifi card. It worked fine in Win7. I have installed official drivers from lenovo's website, but it's same issue.

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.
However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

I am seeing some vague references to older Windows versions automatically backing up the registry at startup and saving the backup in some folder..
Any definite information about this in Windows 8, and where any such backups can be found? How and when is the Windows Registry backed up in Windows 8?
If Windows doesn't do it, could you recommend a tool that can do it in the background on a regular basis? I really don't trust myself with this anymore....

I like to have my tiles on the start screen sorted as I want and that they stay on the place I've moved them to.
But after each reboot of my computer Windows decides to re-arrange them.
This might be exciting for adventurers and explorers but I just want to use my computer quick and easy.
How I keep windows from re-arranging?

I just built a new gaming PC with windows 8 and an msi z87 g45 motherboard. It's amazing, and I installed the Soundblaster and realteck Hd drivers.
The only problem that I'm having is that every time 2 things play at once, the other's volume is lowered. like when I am playing battlefield 4, my gun sound good and then when my friend talks on teamspeak my gun is barely heard for a few seconds afterward. Ive tried changing the "communications- do nothing" thing, but it's not working.

I have a little problem: I've just recently installed Windows 8.1, all the updates, and, from time to time (1 hour or even faster), action center tells me that windows update is disabled, and when I've gone to the settings, it was off. Ok, no problem, it's not hard to enable it. But, as I said, something, I don't know which program or the operating system or anything else stops it.

I just went to a web site that I have been going to for years, and I was using the 'page down' key as I often do. I got to the end of the page, and I saw a "flash" - loading page, at the bottom of the screen, and the next page automatically loaded. I didn't have to click on "next". I just continued to "hit" the 'page down' key.
Is this the new normal, maybe coming, or just something unique to that web site. Because I like it. Using Firefox, windows 8.1
I have made a few changes to speed up Firefox that you see on Google in the "about:config" area. And I have added the "Fastest Fox" add-on.
If there is some setting I can do that would apply to "all" websites, I sure would like to do that.

I've clean installed and registered Windows 8.1 Pro 'With Update', and it logs into the Desktop automatically. If I run "netplwiz" my "Users must enter a user name and password to use this comptuer." check box is checked... As well all my registry entries under:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAuthenticationLogonUI
...seem to be in order for the system requiring a password to be entered before the system loads the start screen or desktop but I'm directly in the desktop whether I cold boot or reboot.

You can prevent Windows from downloading the latest drivers for whichever device, BUT you can't prevent it from auto-installing drivers that it already has for whichever device. Meaning, the below trick, does nothing and Windows still installs drivers for several devices after you uninstall them and restart:

How can I prevent it from auto-installing drivers completely??

I'm using an Asus N550JV running Windows 8.1.
Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.
