System Imaging Missing From Windows 8?

Jul 9, 2013

I recently purchased an Asus X202E laptop with Windows 8. I immediately did an update for all important/critical Windows updates, but beyond that, I haven't added or changed anything else. When I run the "File Recovery for Windows 7" I do not see the ability to create a system image. I'd like to create a system image on a 32Gb USB drive but the option is not there. I've rebooted, and done lots of searching on the internet but, so far, I haven't seen any instances where this feature reported to be missing.

I do have access to TrueImage 2013, but I wanted to see how the native imaging product stacked up against it.

Maintenance :: System Imaging Windows 8.1 (OEM Product Key) To New SSD

Jun 29, 2014

I posted a thread a couple days ago, which pertained to backup and restore of system images.

Windows 8.1/Windows 8 and backup software that works well with UEFI and GPT disks.

I just have another question which related to the last thread, then I think I will be able to sleep.

Can you system image a drive that has Win 8.1 (OEM) onto a new SSD, and not have your sheer will destroyed by the OS not being activated after the image has been applied to new SSD?

I would hope that once the image has been applied to the new drive, the magic within Win 8.1 would realise I am using the same motherboard, but it's just a different drive. Infact, I'm keeping the original 2TB drive in the exact same slot, but of course formatting it once I can get the SSD to boot. (I'm installing the SSD into my Acer's expansion SATA 3 bay on the front of the case - hot swappable technology or something)

System Imaging Windows 8 Machine To External Hard Drive Via USB

Oct 14, 2013

I am having problems with system imaging my Windows 8 machine to an external hardrive via a usb (??) cable.

First, as mentioned in another thread is the exceptionally long time. The external drive is a WD 1TB BTW. I have two older hardrives on the computer. Just installed the second, which at this time is not being used. Trying several several programs, Paragon Free, Easeus, Macrium Reflect and the built in Windows Backup I was getting 14 hour estimates.

The actual issue I wish to resolve is that during a over 9 hour backup of the primary drive with approx. 34GBs, I noted what appears to be a folder with the Windows backup icon called the name of my computer on my external drive. It contains approximately 3GBs of data in multiple folders. Windows backup is turned off. I did not have this file on the external hardrive and I didn't initiate the OS to perform this. It showed no indication of running and occurred during the Macrium backup.

Maintenance :: Imaging Windows 8 With UEFI / GPT / Secure Boot?

Mar 18, 2013

I'm having nothing but epic failures when I try to image a Windows 8 box with Secure Boot enabled, that was installed using UEFI and has GPT partitions.

I can install using standard MBR, and disable Secure Boot and UEFI in the BIOS and I can restore that no problem.

However, I have been playing with Aomei, Macrium, EaseUs, etc to handle my image restores and not having any luck at all. Basically it's this thread that explains my issues almost perfectly.

Home user: Need Win 8 Disk Imaging solution with UEFI-compatible Startup Disks

I want to install Windows 8, using UEFI with Secure Boot, install patches, software, etc, then run sysprep, shut down, image and then deploy the image on the same make/model down the road.

The only real success thus far has been to load Windows 8, and then run imagex to capture a new wim and then install using that WIM. But that's a whole install, I'd rather just lay an image back down.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8.1 Refresh / Recovery - Some System Files Missing

Nov 28, 2013

I recently did an update of my machine from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. The update process did not show any errors or warnings and by the time it finished I was under the impression that everything went smooth.

After the update I was testing the environment and discovered that one of my desktop applications stopped working, I went to the developer's website and indeed I found there is a known issue with their software on 8.1 and to solve it, I had to completely uninstall the software and then install it once more. So I went to Programs and Features in order to do so and to my surprise the Uninstall button was missing from the interface. Right-clicking an item and selecting uninstall from the menu gives a warning message suggesting that the application might have already been uninstalled and asks if I wanted to remove the application from the Programs list. However, clicking OK or Cancel just closes the message box and nothing happens.

So I went and tried to Refresh My PC; Once I clicked Refresh My PC the verification process started and indeed it told my that some system files are missing and that it should take care of it provided I insert my Windows disc. Now since its an OTA update from Win 8 to 8.1 I thought that MS knows that some people will not have a physical copy of 8.1 and so I inserted my Windows 8 Pro System Builder disc hoping it would work, but sadly as you might have guessed, it did not. It told me that I needed the 8.1 recovery disc.

Now I have been looking everywhere for a recovery image to download and use to fix my problem, everywhere I go it suggests that I make my own copy. But how am I supposed to do that if my Windows is faulty and has missing files. I really don't wanna go back to Windows 8 and re-upgrade to 8.1. I have a monitored internet bandwidth and I cannot go and download the 3 GB 8.1 update once more.

How can I repair my 8.1 machine?

I came across this article describing how to get an ISO image for 8.1 with a Windows 8 product Key. However, entering my Windows 8 Pro System Builder (OEM) key in the box fails and tells me that the key I entered is not for this product.

2. The volume and DVD eject buttons don't. (The Wireless button definitely does.)

Setup Installation :: EFI System Partition Missing Files - Repair Disk Won't Boot?

Nov 30, 2013

While I was messing around with my laptop, I decided to add on a fourth operating system, Arch Linux. I suppose I was pushing my luck a bit . Anyways, during the installation, I accidentally deleted the EFI system partition from my laptop, which contained the Windows Boot Manager and necessary files to boot. Great. I only made things worse by trying to troubleshoot, and broke grub as well.

I have a Windows 8 repair disk I made using the Windows 8 built in utility, but it does not boot: the computer turns on, and just hangs at the Toshiba splash screen.

I also can obviously not access the Toshiba recovery partitions, as they are booted into just like Windows itself.

I found a bootx64.efi file on one of my system's recovery partitions (Toshiba seems to have some really complex system going on) and placed it in EFIootootx64.efi. According to this site, FGA: The EFI boot process., I need to place the bkpbootmgfw.efi (on my system, that was what it was called, but I suspect boot-repair (ubuntu tool) messed something up when I was first setting up grub and the ESP and the bkp stands for backup) back onto the EFI System Partition.

Where to look for in the various Windows Imaging Format .wim and .swm files I have laying around my recovery partition(s) in order to extract the necessary EFI files. Any Windows Repair iso that works.

Maintenance :: Win 8.1 Installed On SSD - Imaging Software Doesn't See Second Hard Drive

Maintenance :: Imaging Apps That Support UEFI / GPT And Secure Boot?

Mar 3, 2013

I have a paid for version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 that I have used for years with my Windows 7 box and it's been good.

I've also used Macrium Reflect Free, and today I tend to use AOMEI ddata backuper as it's free for personal and commercial use.

I have a new Dell laptop (with Windows 8), and thus far I have disabled the UEFI boot options and Secure Boot and use a classic setup. However, if I wanted to have a play with these other options to see what impact they would have on system performance, which of these drive imaging software packages would work?

I also have a desktop at work with all of these options (and that's likely where I will experiment). On that box, it's simple to drop in a test hard drive and whack away until I get it working. My laptop has an msata drive and I don't have any spares of these drives lying around.

Missing Drive Icons In Windows 8

May 24, 2013

I've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Win8, and another for storage of random things.

The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.

It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it'll show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.

It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.

Windows Management Files Are Missing?

Apr 9, 2013

It did an update initially of one file and then of 15 (this on a Monday ...but I hadn't shut it down in a while so figured it was just catching up on patch Tuesday stuff). When it finished and rebooted it won't run properly.

I get a lack screen with the task bar in grey at the bottom of the screen but both are empty.I have previously installed the pokki start menu and initially the pokki symbol was there and using that I managed to get into the control panel and thence to the computer management screens and on one of them there was a message displayed "windows management files are missing".By right clicking on the task bar I can get to the task manager but it shows no running processes under the processes tab.

Tried re installing from my DVD but so far no good unable to get it to oot from the DVD drive, also tried downloading the windows defender offline file onto a USB but again can't seem to get it to run from the USB drive.

Windows 8 Missing On Dual Boot Start Up

Apr 24, 2013

I bought a new laptop 350gb HDD with Windows 8 64bit preinstalled (no disc came with it) however I needed win7 32bit for my job since the softwares used are only compatible with old win version. I managed to back up my Windows 8 before I partitioned my HDD into 3 drives and installed win7 ultimate 32 bit on a different partition. I remember that my Windows 8 was installed in Drive C (100GB) while I have 80+GB for Shared files on Drive E and the rest of the memory are for Drive D where I installed win 7 and I labeled each drives accordingly. At first everything was working fine on both O.S, it was giving me the dual boot option at start up but I forgot if I really have tested running both O.S. before I gave my laptop to my supervisor and asked him a favor to intall the softwares for work purposes.

My supervisor then approached me and said that there might be some incompatibility issue with the updates I have on my win7 coz some applications don't install so he asked me if its ok if he reinstalls a new win7 so I said yes since Im confident that its will work fine and I have backed up my Windows 8 anyway, in short, I left everything into his hands. Later, he then got back to me and told me every job related softwares now work except that my Windows 8 now doesnt show and yes, dual boot option is not there anymore and it boots automatically to win7 like Windows 8 is not there.

I've read some forums how to check if your O.S are still there and it could just be a boot up issue and use of Easy BCD might work. I have attached images below for your reference. Now what I'm confused of is that my Windows 8 appears to be in Drive D and win7 could be in Drive C, which I'm thinking if they were exchanged when my sup reinstalled win7 or he may have overlapped my Windows 8. Im pretty sure he knows which drive is for which O.S since I labeled them. Now Im afraid to use EasyBCD on the wrong drive and I cant approach my supervisor anymore to bother him again since he worked on my laptop for almost the whole day at work.

- if both o.s. are still intact and recognized
- why the Drive letters got mixed up and how to check which drive has which o.s coz it seems like both drives has a part of my work related applications (didn't put personal files yet on win 8 when I had both o.s installed)
- is Drive D really is my Windows 8 now?
- does Easy BCD really work
- how to use Easy BCD to get my Windows 8 to boot up to or both of them to show at start up without corrupting my work related softwares

Missing Files After Chkdsk Repair On Windows 8.1?

May 7, 2014

So I did a disk repair for one of my hard drives (not the system drive ) using check disk because I could not open my folders it would say they were corrupted. This followed me powering off my pc while it was shutting down. So after the chkdisk repair my drive was now functioning ok except for one thing; some of my files and were missing. I could not see any Found.xxx folder even after showing hidden files. I then checked my free space and noticed that it had not changed inspite of the files missing one of which was a folder containing 250GB of data which I cant afford to lose. This has led me to think my data is still on the drive but just hidden somehow. How can I recover this data.

Missing All Windows 8 Basic Metro Icons

Oct 26, 2012

I just upgraded to windows 8 ( i just bought the upgrade from the microsoft website).

After installing the upgrade I noticed that I was missing ALL the Metro Tiles basic ICONS ie: windows app store, internet explorer, mail , maps , messaging , music , news , people , photos , reader , travel , video ETC...

Check the attached JPGs. YOu will notice the empty tiles in the Metro UI. ALSO if i go to Default Programs you will also see that Icons are missing there as well. It's as if windows has no clue where to find the icons or windows never installed them...

I've rebooted a bunch of time. I tried doing a sfc scan ( or whatever the name is). It said it found some corrupt files and fixed them. I rebooted again but still no icons are showing up.

As much as possible, I do not want to do a fresh install or a refresh. I also have no restore points prior because well its always been like this ever since it finished installing.

Clicking the empty tiles work. It starts the application. Problem is I have no clue which tile is what.

Entire Windows 8 Desktop Is Missing On Login

Mar 20, 2013

I've got the weirdest thing going on today...I go to sign out my wife from her account on our Windows 8 desktop and login in to mine (administrator) and it logs in...except there isn't anything to see except Start on the left and my name on the right. Not a single icon...when I right click and select all apps....nothing.

I was able to get to tasks and got to the "desktop" and was able to use the computer...I'm typing on it now. But the main screen is completely missing!

I signed out and checked my wife's login and all the app icons are there...no problem. I go back to mine and it's completely empty.

I went to do a system restore thinking something big must be wrong and the system restore says it can't access a file. The whole system was freshly loaded about two weeks ago and doesn't have any strange software running...in fact, I think iTunes is about the only non-stock software that has been added, but even then, iTunes worked fine.

Why is my main screen missing everything, but not on another account on the same desktop?

Is there a way to point Windows to the proper file? Also, system restore from within Windows is not working, but I do have original HP restore disks to use if I get completely desperate...
