How To Upgrade Windows 7 Directly To Windows 8.1 Pro WMC
Sep 22, 2013
is there a way to upgrade windows 7 directly to windows 8.1 pro WMC ?
if there's no way, can i upgrade windows 7 pro to windows 8 pro then to windows 8.1 pro wmc by using PRO WMC that already included in ISO?
so i dont need to install separate download of 8.1 update on each computer. i can just install from ISO and activate using their own keys.

Create a Client Hyper-V Virtual Machine for Windows XP, I showed you how to create a virtual machine in Windows 8's Client Hyper-V designed for Windows XP. Using this technique, you can run Windows XP applications from your Windows 8 system by switching over to the virtual machine. However, since that article was published, I've received email from readers wondering if there was a way to run Windows XP applications in Windows 8 like you could with the Windows XP-Mode feature in Windows 7.

I've dual boot with Windows 7 and 8.1. It worked fine. Recently I've repaired Windows 8.1 boot problem with Win 8.1 DVD. Now Windows 8.1 directly opens without dual boot menu. But when I restart, the boot menu comes and works fine.

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104
Try again Cancel
Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.

I have used desktop for many years and am used to it. I am sure the tiles thing is better, but I want my desktop. Instead of having the tiles come up and clicking on the desktop, how can I make it just go to the desktop and avoid the tiles. I found something in setup about defaulting to desktop, but that didn't seem to change anything.

I have a question regarding the choice between win 8 and win 8.1. As stated here on 8forums, on October 18th the win 8.1 will be released as final version. Does this mean that i'll be able to download not the win 8.1 preview ISO, but the win 8.1 FINAL ISO? Or i'll still need to run the Upgrade Assistant to download the files for me?
I have a valid win 8 pro key and i want to make a clean install. Still, i wonder is there a reason to wait till win 8.1 will be released to download and install it at once and not to install win 8 and then 8.1 (as it will reset settings and apps i guess).
So the question is - will it be possible to download win 8.1 ISO from microsoft directly as a file (as one can download win 8.1 preview right now) and not use Upgrade Assistant that will download multiple files for me that i'll be wrapping to make an ISO?

This will let you open regedit directly to a registry key stored on your clipboard (via shell extension)
Instructions: Install .reg, then copy a registry key to your clipboard. Right click anywhere and "Open Registry".
Can be in either long or short name format. Translates HKCR, HKCU, and HKLM to their full names on the fly. Feel free to change the MUIVerb to anything you prefer. Is working on W7/W8/W2012.
Here are some sample keys for you to test with.
Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshell
HKCRDirectoryBackgroundshell
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerCommandStoreshell
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerCommandStoreshell
;
and here is the .reg. I'll attach a .zip if feedback is good.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryBackgroundshellOpen_Registry]
"MUIVerb"="Open Registry"
"icon"="regedit.exe"
"Position"="Top"
"HasLUAShield"=""

I was able to start the install of 8.1 Preview directly from the downloaded .iso file. Just double clicked on it to open in Windows Explorer then double clicked on setup.exe and off it went. This only works from a booted Windows 8 system (not sure about Windows 7).

Didn't need to create a bootable flash drive or DVD.

There have been a lot of questions about how to boot directly into desktop and avoid Metro. My question is just the opposite. When I'm in Metro and I open an app, it first brings up the desktop and then the app on top of it. I would like to open an app without opening desktop. Is there a way?

I use a shortcut to restart Windows 8.1 to my UEFI BIOS. The problem is it goes through various screens and selections until I finally get to the one to boot to my UEFI. I was wondering id there was a way to boot directly to my UEFI without going through extra steps? Here's what I'm using now:
C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -r -o -f -t 00

I am running win 8.1 on HP laptop. When I first turn on the unit, the first to appear on the screen is a sports team logo that I put there a while back. However, to be able to continue to the sign-in page, I have to either move the mouse or click enter to get there. Once I enter my password, it takes me to the Start menu. I want to eliminate the first screen and go directly to sign in and then to desktop.

I am using a dell latitude e6430 laptop and just recently i encountered this problem- The airplane mode of my computer refuses to be turned off.
I tried going to the pc settings > networks but the selection is grayed out and stays at [on]. This results in my computer not being able to connect to the internet.
I have also tried doing a system restore to the date when it was working perfectly fine, but the airplane mode is still grayed out.
The only way i could access my internet on this computer is to tether my mobile phone and connect it to the wifi via USB tethering.
Is there any way to force off the airplane mode(In command prompt etc) or Remove the option?

After running CCleaner v 3.27.1900, I am unable to Login to Facebook directly. Selecting the icon in my favorites, IE, only results in the loading icon, with no connection to the site. The same thing occurs when manually entering a search and selecting Facebook.
However, when I receive an email advising me of activity from one of my Facebook friends, I can select SEE COMMENT and go directly and quickly to the Facebook page.

I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?

Not sure if this is the right board, but I'm keen on accessing the aforementioned box directly rather going through task manager due to the run as admin check box, but I can't find the file location. I prefer using the run dialog usually to access apps because I could do without extra effort to merely SEARCH for apps. However I can't use it to run apps as admin (at least I've forgotten the line I might have used in vista and 7). Can the aforementioned box be accessed directly?

I installed the windows 8.1 update thinking it would just upgrade the system but it looks as though it's done a reinstall. I've now got loads of things not working, my programs have lost lots of there settings and it seems really slow.
I'm currently restoring a true image back up and I'm praying it's going to work , I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 until I reinstall the system from scratch.

I'm stuck. I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant prior to installing Win 8. According to the report I needed to delete Intel(R) Pro Network Connection 12.1.12, which I did.
I upgraded to Win 8 but now I have no permissions. I'll looked at all the threads about opening a cmd windows, which I can, but since I logon to the O/S with just user level permissions I can't issue any admin level apps. I can't even navigate to my C: drive. I get 'Access is denied'.
I'm tried right-clicking on the Command Prompt and 'Run as Administrator', nothing. Which makes sense since I'm logon on with only User rights.
I need full admin rights. I can't update my HOSTS file which really screws up my FTP and Telnet sessions.
I cannot logon as administrator, so I can't change anything. Should I reinstall??
